When I first started this challenge I set out to post up all my bets - to provide me with an online diary of my endeavours to complete this challenge. Also I hope it would act as a self-learning mechanism of what I do well and not so well.
Well yesterday (1st September) was a very very tough day which in all honesty may have broken my resolve to keep going .... Firstly before I put up the bets - there have been a number of contributors Johnny Wad, Lord Bobbbin and one or two others that have put up some very well meaning posts. I thank you for those - I did listen but like all of us individually we make the ultimate decision on what we do and when we do it. It is a pity that I had to ruin yesterday as I was having a very profitable time in the UK horse racing ... nice and controlled laying with the right stakes and return. It is embarrassing to put these bets up on here for all to see but I will .... each bet was based on actual thoughts on the matches so there was no literally blind betting going on but alas as I have pointed out before I specialise in not specialising in any particular market - which is what I like but naturally I don't have the full background that say a tennis pro punter would have. Well here I go .... |

Initially with the very good day on the UK racing and the win in tennis of Jankovic I was going to play a certain amount (£600) on Monfils ... but with the bets above already on (£1100) Monfils I played some more ... thinking he would eventualls come good and take the match in 4 sets.

I then finally turn to Gasquet (who I thought would do quite well in this tournament) ... with bets at various odds (two of them I left inplay and went to bed) .... thnking he will be able to wear the big guy down. What I forgot to think about in my haste to grab some money back is that big serving is King on these courts and as I got caught in the last Isner match ... in hindsight shouldn't have done this bet at all ....

So all in all a good day ruined (along with this challenge) by - firstly overstaking, secondly not greening up when I had the chance (Monfils match) and thirdly relying on the seeded players to turn around their matches.

My internet connection just dropped out so I am having to re-post this one. I had some nice long comments but don't wish retype it all.
A very good day on the horse racing ruined by a pitiful day on the tennis. I feel quite low about it all - not fully knowing whether to walk now with £10K or continue. Tricky ... At the end of the day I am just a normal guy giving this challenge a go - while I strongly feel I have some 'talent' in betting which not everyone has - in reality I am not a machine who can set aside all the emotions that we as gamblers go through. I also know that I wish to do this challenge using my own 'style' of betting in lots of markets (ie: I like being a specialist in not specialising) but also know that the challenge may not succeed if I continue down this path. I want it to be financially rewardsing but ultimately enjoyable to do .... One thing I do plan on changing is the sense of responsibility to post every bet I do as soon as I can on the thread. Many other challenge threads present and past simply do summaries of what betting they have done so why can't I do that as well .... you see I quite like making this challenge thread somewhat 'dynamic and live' but it sure has been wearing me down sometimes. As Lord Bobbbin pointed out - it really is nor here nor there to others whether I fail or succeed - so I should do what is best for me. I will continue to post up as and when I place bets but I won't become a slave to it ... Challenge Summary: 03/04/2011 2500 01/05/2011 4400 01/06/2011 5680 01/07/2011 7755 01/08/2011 11500 02/08/2011 11602 03/08/2011 11826 04/08/2011 11000 05/08/2011 11186 06/08/2011 11449 07/08/2011 10750 08/08/2011 9000 09/08/2011 9000 10/08/2011 9880 11/08/2011 10951 12/08/2011 11000 13/08/2011 11000 14/08/2011 11254 15/08/2011 12000 16/08/2011 11700 17/08/2011 12060 18/08/2011 12892 19/08/2011 12002 20/08/2011 13575 21/08/2011 15162 22/08/2011 13500 23/08/2011 14457 24/08/2011 14907 25/08/2011 15396 26/08/2011 16031 27/08/2011 14697 28/08/2011 16107 29/08/2011 15250 30/08/2011 15275 31/08/2011 13350 01/09/2011 10000 |

Hi Undern,
Please forgive me for my repeated intrusion into your very readable challenge thread. I appreciate that you are busy making bets and that the purpose of the thread is mainly record keeping and not the entertainment of bystanders. If you find the time to answer two of my questions I would be grateful. Firstly, why do you mix small and large bets? You can only afford few large bets (typical size is 10% of your bank), so that your edge (or positive expectation, or drift) is almost completely drowned by the randomness. This basically means that you enter large bets until your bank reaches a low (stop-loss) level. Then you decrease the bet sizes and start winning money with controlled small bets. It just doesn't make sense, the only way to make money is to use many small bets so that the randomness cancels and the positive edge starts to dominate. But you know all that and you repeatedly say that the point of this challenge is to learn the necessary discipline. A related observation is that you tend to regret the loss of individual bets. Again, that doesn't really make sense. You should only start worrying if you loose too many small bets in a row (say 10). Secondly, you have repeatedly mentioned the concept of utility functions. Is that just a metaphor, or do you actually specify your risk-averseness level and calibrate the bet size accordingly? Again, apologies if you find my comments annoying, they meant to be genuinely helpful. Have fun, DrF |

Your first question: Mix of small and large bets - good observation. Have been caught betting too heavily in markets like tennis, F1 and sometimes football simply because I sometimes feel as if I get a bet right it is a nice way to pick up some solid money (rightly or wrongly). Where as in horse laying most of the time - the win is a lot less than the liability. Your second question: Utility is a measure of happiness which for example in a football match I am betting on I hope to create a level of happiness which can be mapped over time (ie: a function of time). Which relates to risk levels, bet size etc ... eg: I bet £100 on 0-0 score to win £1000. Now I am 'happy' to lose £100 to hopefully win £1000. However at say the 80th minute - I am 'happy' to trade off some in order say win £750 if it stays at 0-0 or £150 if it doesn't - simply because I would be unhappy if I didn't trade off and not only lost the chance to make a profit but also lost my original £100 bet ..... Some people refer to 'value' where you simply stick with your original bet ... but to me 'happiness' is the better measuring stick when looking at individual bets. Another person may choose to not trade off until 86th min while someone else may choose to trade off at the 70th min .... this creates that inidividuals utility function. As you can see - I don't always get it right - many times through a bet going the wrong way or simply trying to eek out a bit more profit from a bet (like the Monfils one yesterday). |
|

Ah, interesting.
> However at say the 80th minute - I am 'happy' to trade off some in order say win £750 > if it stays at 0-0 or £150 if it doesn't - simply because I would be unhappy if I > didn't trade off and not only lost the chance to make a profit but also lost my > original £100 bet ..... > Some people refer to 'value' where you simply stick with your original bet ... but > to me 'happiness' is the better measuring stick when looking at individual bets. > Another person may choose to not trade off until 86th min while someone else may > choose to trade off at > the 70th min .... this creates that inidividuals utility function. The reason why I asked is that utility functions are actually a well established concept which can be used to determined the risk averseness levels of traders, i.e. compute acceptable risk levels. A typical utility function is -exp(- money). This function has the property that -exp(- 2* money)< 2 * exp(- money), i.e. doubling the wealth does not double the corresponding happiness. In real life one often makes the observation that two Ferraris will not make you twice as happy as just one Ferrari. This corresponds nicely to what you wrote: You prefer a smaller certain profit over a larger expected profit. Perfectly rational. |

undern an upsetting read. hope you come to a decision that suits you.
i've been there. july 2011 was worse for me than your last 4 days would you believe. still not really got over it. good on you for posting the bets so painfully honestly. dont think anyone else on the forum would. and your still $7.5k up. incredible achievement i'd say!! chin up fella!! |
|
By:
Hey don't beat yourself up, just cos a bet loses doesn't make it bad. The way you bet you're bound to have some hairy runs occasionally and as paulme says, you are 7.5k up.
I would suggest, as others have, reducing the intensity of what you do, maybe you'd enjoy it more? |
|
By:
Hi undern, pity the last few days have gone bad but all i can say is i've thoroughly enjoyed following your thread and hope you carry on as I am sure you can complete your challenge. If i was in your position i would have a complete break for a week or so (no matter how hard it will be) and hopefully you will realise what you've achieved so far and come back with the confidence to carry on. G/l and chin up m8. Oggie oggie oggie!!

That's tough to hear Undern. Probably a few days off would help enormously, and if you then come back and try and play with smaller stakes (perhaps withdrawing a large portion of your bank first), I'm sure you can build your way back up.
It's always hard to bet sensibly when you've got that 'my bank should be higher than it is' feeling, but I suspect you can make it. Sad though it is for me to say this, you should give posting on this thread a miss for a while. I know from my own experience that posting my own bets on a forum means I take a bigger emotional stake in whether I win or lose. Losing money is one thing, and it should, really, be the only thing. But it's not! Sadly, being seen as a 'loser' by the people reading my posts just compounds everything and makes me go on placing bets, just to prove that I'm a winner. It's tough enough keeping my emotions in check without also wanting to impress the forum. I suspect that's one reason why a lot of posters don't put up their bets here - it's damned hard, and the benefits to you probably won't outweigh the increased pressure that comes during the inevitable bad periods. It's been an interesting read though. And good luck. |

Thanks for all the posts. I will in time reply individually but it is appreciated.
I played today (mainly this morning out of frustration) and have just arrived back from a lovely bike ride with my wife .... the sun was shining, the icecream was enjoyable and she is not bad either .... .Do I look back and think if I had only done this and I had only done that ... or do I look back and think positively about what gains I have made and some of the darn good bets I have placed. While taking a break would be in some cases a sensible thing ... I feel keen to continue simply because apart from the last few days (I sensed I was putting up too many largish bets last weekend) things have on the whole worked out reasonably well. In any case I do have this hip operation coming up so anything to keep my mind off that ... LB has probably hit the nail on the head. As the bank increases and especially when I have made some nice daily gains ... you tend to think okay lets step it up a notch or two and secondly you start to think a daily increase should be £1000 rather than the £100 to £150 I should be targetting. It feels good to simply have a winning bet ... no matter how much the profit is - therefore I need to re-address some of the staking that I do. Putting the bets up on an open forum (which I don't mind doing) does bear pressures both within and the need to succeed in front of others. It has warn me down somewhat but then again I need to learn when I am feeling down a bit and simply not post rather than carry on ... Going forward I will post as the bets go up (or close to) but certainly some days I am going to post a summary of the bets later on ... thanks again to all the supportive comments it is appreciated ... just naturally feeling so frustrated that I self-inflicted some damagae to my challenge ... |

i think youll hit £15k within a week undern. you have the knack and you've proved you do unlike any other forum user.
please keep posting bets. best thread on here! |

undern,
You shouldnt look back and think i should have done this or that, but you can look back and try learn from those mistakes, and those good bets you made. If i were you i would take a small break, spend some of the money you have made, treat the wife. I think in a challenge like this it can quickly become about the numbers and its easy to lose sight of the money and time being invested, and it all becomes a little abstract. As far as im aware you havent set a time limit on you reaching your goal, so there is no rush, with a slow and steady approach you may find you strike better bets, and your staking becomes more manageable/sensible, and you wont be as susceptible to large fluctuations in your betting bank. Good luck going forward. |

cheers coolhand - definitely need to tone down some of the bets and manage my time better.
Nothing like the wait of Paulme's expectations ... |

Hi Undern, I am sure this thread has been a constant voyage of discovery for you and like others I have always enjoyed looking in but keeping a low profile. If you step back you will see you have done so well to be where you are. I hope you take some consolation that other fellow traders/gamblers recognise that. I wish you well whatever you do.

undern - "no joking or banter from me here"
I am sorry to have to witness you losing such a big chunk of your profit in one day, I have experienced things going wrong many times with my own betting and know how you feel, all you can do is put it down to "thats gambling - thats the way it can go" You were very unfortunate to go on a losing run with such big bets yesterday - if things had gone the other way it would have been celebration time for a very good day You have proven over the timescale of this topic that you can win on Betfair and I can't see any reason why you wont recover from yesterdays losses, I hope to see you go on some long winning runs in the very near future Hold your head up high undern and never forget you are one of the 3% of gamblers that are winning here I wish you all the very best in the future |

cheers Inono. Blind faith in a tennis player (Monfils) and to add to the bet as I went certainly was hard to take when it came crashing down ...

Well to be honest - with a large losing Aussie racing bet earlier this morning ... I thought that was the sign of things to come ... just glad to have got through the day without going backwards and pleased with the increase today. Tried to play a bit smarter .... always going to bet on the goals markets in England game (but saying that they had scored two before I knew it ...) and earlier Aussie game. Didn't over play on the UK racing (although I concede I went a bit wild this morning on the Aussie racing) ... and did some smart things like reduce my stake in Sharapova during the match, didn't bet on Wawrinka when initially I was considering it and always going to go in quite large on Murray (at some higher odds in the first set). Missed out betting on Ferrer as watching a movie ... and won't bother betting on Roddick.

Good day there Undern. Back to profit! As Ty Cobb used to say, the reason his losing phases in baseball were so short was down to one thing. When his game started to go off, he'd make a point of forgetting about hitting big home runs. Instead, he'd just concentrate on making contact with the ball. Any contact, no matter how small. Once he felt he was getting the feel for it once more, he'd start increasing his power again...
I'm sure you'll be back up to those highs before long. (Just stay away from that overstaking!!) |
