Humour me if you will.
I used a martingale system whilst doing some tennis trading and I found it successful. What I was doing was backing the reciever to break in certain womens tennis matches and butterring up until it hit in the match. In most matches, besides where the bigger names are playing, the server to hold is at far to short a price. You can usually get $2.50 - $3 for the reciever to break and I was betting $25, 50,100 etc until I got my result then moving to the next match. I didnt get detailed stats tho and didnt really keep it up mainly because I am in Australia and without being able to bet over the internet when matches are live it became too frustrating. I am considering starting again tho and would apreciate any thoughts/questions/etc??? Cheers |

OzBattla - You will get this right over and over again, but what happens on the day when it goes horribly wrong? Firstly, it could get very psychological and it could wipe you out???
I've spent many hours racking my brains out trying to make some kinda martingale work (on paper fortunately) but failed miserably! I personally think it's doomed! Good luck anyway! |

Ling 15:50 the clear fav will lose. Statistically speaking.

Hi Lex!
Haha, I'm still not convinced! I'm gonna risk sounding boring cos I've said it all before but this is why... After many many hours of racking my brains out I wrote this program to go through lots of horse racing data allowing me to change parameters on lots of different elements of a race. After many more hours I got 6 months of races together. Firstly from the Racing Post, and then from Timeform. If only I'd discovered Timeform first damn it!!! Anyway, on with this boring story... I got excited so many times cos I'd see my cash going up and up whilst it was whizzing through the results, and then it would go down ending in a loss. What I learnt from all this garbage is that a system can fool you into thinking that it works and then it can go totally pear-shaped. I REALLY hope that your system keeps on producing profit but I can't help thinking that something bad will happen. Good luck! You'll need it ha ha! |
|

One more thing Lex...
I understand that your system involves a bit of thought which is better than just backing/laying stuff blindly like I was trying to do. And you are kinda analysing things such as the mindset of the bookies etc. so maybe you have got a good system? The thing that makes me scream out though is that infamous word "martingale". From all my countless experiments I just can't see how it could work, but I'm no maths wizard! 8x8=64. 9x9=81. That's just memory!!! When I lost (not for real!) I tried increasing my stake by all different kinds of percentages and there was only one that worked and that was 100% which is fine if your bank is £1,000,000 etc. For me, it's not about being up after a few weeks, it's for ever! The problem is, even if my system was up after 5 years, it could be down in the next 5. I'm very obsessive and I spend a lot of time playing with programs and figures etc. looking for things to improve my gambling. I need to get out more!!! The battle continues... |

sheppy123 - were you rating races? If so can you give me all the ratings for just one race where your betting selection method won or lost?
A mixed age handicap race with at least 8 runners would be best. Please pick at random giving date and time of race...... Just want to see whether your ratings were up to a good standard. If they are, then I suspect you just have not cracked how to use ratings. 3 races would be more interesting than 1 ...if you still have ratings. Don't need to see the points allocated for each horse ....just the RANK ORDER shown. Who knows....it might lead to you gleaning something from posting ratings. Cheers |

DFCIRONMAN
I didn't use any type of ratings. It was mostly basic stuff such as the amount of runners, handicaps, distance etc. As time went on my program got more complex and I was finding out stuff like... Laying every horse that's less than EVS but there has to be at least 3 horses with odds less than 5 etc. My logic being that the more horses with short odds, the less chance the odds on had of winning. I even incorporated a lot of martingale ideas which is why I speak so negatively about it. To be honest, compared with the programs out there mine is like Commodore 64 stuff! Remember that! |

Shep - do you remember what I said ? Martingale does not work because it is doubling up, and in its pure form youre doubling up on even money shots where the house has the edge. eg roulette.
What I keep saying (re read it) is that you are using some well founded stats (and I have proved the point over and over) and a staking method based on those stats. (staking based on the losing run example I gave) I sort of highjacked this thread (sorry about that) but Martingale does not work - that is common ground _ My point was that I was trying to show that you can win long term by knowing a few stats and staking correctly. Chasing will lose you money (lord knows I've done that like most of us) so dont ever do Martingale. Good luck to you all. ![]() |

OK Lex - you win!
I'm the loser round here! I promise I'll never mention Martingale again! Have a good night! |

sheppy123 - You really should check out RATINGS, then work out how to use them.
Flatstats.co.uk shows their ratings from previous results. They appear to do a professional job on them.....and are worth you checking. I suggest you check out where they rated the top 5 favourites in the market for each race rated.......Concentrate on HANDICAP race types...but not ones that are Conditional/Apprentices/Lady jockeys/ Selling type races. Consider the RANK position of the favourite and SP ODDS , then decide whether it was a vale back or lay. GL |

I laughed at little at the OP roulette comment - because it's something i swore by as a teenager.
I downloaded intercasino software when i was 18 or 19 and turned the animation off on roulette. With a £75 bankroll, i'd click "roll, roll, roll, roll, roll" and wait for a sequence of 6 evens/odds/highs/lows/reds/blacks, then bet the opposite because it was 'due'. It worked for a while, i rolled up to 2k in the space of about a weel, then blew it all in under 15 minutes when i hit a bad run. Eventually you realise that when a ball is spun on the wheel the previous spin has as much relevance at that point as what you had for breakfast 2 years ago. It has no bearing on the outcome of the next spin - so what's the point in even lodging the sequence? On the issue of the martingale in a wider sense i do still believe in it to an extent if use with 1. Bankroll management & 2. Researched picks. What i mean by Bankroll management is dedicate 5% of your roll to a series of bets you have decided before hand you'll apply the system to. And by point 2, i mean bets you believe in, not randomly picked coin tosses. So for example if your bankroll is £1500, take £75 and dedicate to a Martingale series - where the target is to bet £5/£10/£20/£40. You get 4 lives and need to win 15 bets before hitting 4 losses in a row. If your good at picking bets, i'm talking the likes of Man United away to Swansea (better than evens last week for instance) - you can be confident of avoiding the 4-in-a-row loss. And if you do, you end the sequence there and move on, don't risk more than 5%, if any system ever needed a 5% bankroll protection more than poker, it's a martingale. |

The Martingale system fails even the watered down Martingale,as your bankroll can never compete with casino min/max limits.
Casinos know this. Doing it on paper is far different than real time. Study laws of probabity, theres no such thing as averages. |
|

Also roulette wheels have no memory.
Any mathamatition worth his salt will tell your theory is garbage. |

its a good un on the gee gees tho' as I have repeatedly demonstrated, if you do it right of course.

If you toss a coin in the air often enough you will get runs of far greater than 12 heads or 12 tails, so it has to happen with the roulette wheel too.
