City have been a team in decline for almost a year. The likes of Foden ,Haaaland and Doku have lost their zest for the game. In the meantime the lethargy of their defence and the demise of both Walker and Stones has not been addressed. Guardiola is running on empty and basically the whole thing is a shambles. Perhaps City need to get shot of Guardiola and bring in someone like big Sam Allardyce? There are no shortage of backsides that need to be kicked at the Etihad and big Sam is a man who won't hesitate to do precisely that.

This will be the beginning of the end of the Premier League as the Saudi league becomes the most attractive league to play in the world, offering more money, and more access to CWC which will overtake CL as world's premier competition, while Premier League will have nothing left to offer and become second fiddle.

In 10 years, Sky's main product will be the Saudi League, and the Premier League will be a secondary product like you see with the SPL today.

The weather and lifestyle make Saudi unattractive to multi-millionaire footballers, especially non-muslim players and much, much moreso their WAGS. They can succeed somewhat at doing it in golf but the golf tournaments aren't played in Saudi, they are played in the US mainly.
This tournament was funded to the tune of 1bn by the Saudis, who made a 1bn investment in DAZN coincidentally at the same time DAZN paid 1bn for the rights. It's a once in 4 years tournament and is a pain in the backside for ambitious players and managers of euro teams, who will likely suffer next season and at the WC because of it. It's not a rival to the PL/CL at all. There is nothing organic or sustainable about it and playing it in the US doesn't help with multiple games having to be suspended due to weather events, making it somewhat farcical. People will have forgotten all about it come August when the real football starts again and won't be reminded about it for years. If the Saudis want to take over football they'll need to fund an annual rival to the CL with non-euro clubs allowed enter (how will FFP work with Saudi teams?) and it can't be played in Saudi, so it won't be the Saudi Pro League or CWC, it will have to be something completely different. |

The inevitable global super league similar to LIV tour will not primarily be played in Saudi either, and the money will dwarf EPL money.

I suspect it's not so much the Saudis who want to take over club football but rather FIFA, who have no control over top level club football revenues and need an international element in order to wrestle control of the highest revenues in the game from europe.

So you'll have the logistics of a round-trip to/from eg Brazil to play an away game (with next to no fans travelling and they'll be more against it than ESL) and being jet-lagged for a week afterwards. There's a reason why global sporting events are relatively short, hosted in one place and aren't annual events or the bread and butter.

I imagine they'll just wanna stretch the UCL to include Gulf teams. Seeing their blessed Al Hilal line up against Real and Barca would be the big win.

Not to mention visas, food/diet, needing shots etc etc. Even for a world cup teams go over weeks in advance to acclimatise. You'd need the guts of 2 weeks before/after games like that before you could play again, so that means fewer games, players not as sharp or match fit and asking multi-millionaire footballers who currently only have to 'work' for 2 hours most days before rolling back to their mansion in their ferraris for a nap to give all that up and live out of hotels and suitcases away from their kids and families like tennis players have to for large chunks of the season.
All for less, soulless, football with no support and a lower standard of play. An extra 5m a year after tax for that wouldn't be worth it to someone who is already a multi-millionaire. |

I don't remember world cup kicking off so late on east coast Sponsors will want their product advertised. Saudis wanted world cup and likely want club World Cup in future. Sponsor these tournaments and buying influence... Saudis building luxury estates.. Neom, but that seems to already be scaled back, only so much spare cash |

The Saudi league has had Ronaldo for 3 years and I have never met anyone that has watched a single game. The CWC is a huge flop with tens of thousands of empty seats. Not seen any fan of Liverpool or Arsenal bemoaning not being in it.
