I don't see a problem. The player runs down his contract so he can go to the highest bidder, max his salary, while his current team gets no transfer fee. He's fully entitled to do that and it's just business. The fans pay his and every other player's wages - by giving that player stick, at the very least, it might make other players think twice about doing the same. The fans are fully entitled to do that and it's just business.

That's pretty much how I see it, too, GB. The 'love for the club' words seem at odds with the actions. The season's over, we can't finish any higher. The people paying his wages are fully entitled to let him know what they think, if that's what they think.
Fans of other clubs getting off on this are hilarious. As if they would behave any differently with the boot on the other foot and one of their star players heading off elsewhere on a free. |
|
By:
Yep Arnold can't have it both ways. He's entitled to do what he's done but the fans are entitled to show what they think of him. Free market and free speech isn't it.
|
|
By:
Fans contribute towards the wages, probably about a third (wild guess), possibly less, so I agree, they are entitled to a say. Yes, the booing was a bit of an eye-opener, but as Latalomne correctly implied, other fans would do the same. We did when Sol Campbell left on a free to Arsenal, but they're no angels themselves, giving Ashley Cole the moniker 'Cashley Cole' - Let's keep this real lads.
|
|
By:
Yeah exactly. I don't think I'd have booed, but after a couple of beers and being in a big crowd, who knows. Trent has looked after himself at the end of the day. I'd have done the same thing in his shoes. But you can't just string the club and the fans along for months and not expect any blowback. He should just be taken out of the squad now for the last couple of games. An unnecessary distraction while we should be focussing on the celebrations.

Football's emotional not rational. That's what makes it what it is. Why should I care what some blokes on mega money I've never met do a couple of times a week? It's nonsense. But it's real. So the idea that fans should be cold and rational and park their emotions is for the birds. If you wanted to be cold and rational, you'd do something more productive with your time than follow a football team.

Liverpool legend Stevie Nicol said it was absolutely disgusting and absolutely classless, went in hard. Also said Trent should play the last game and fans who want to boo shouldn't turn up.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B4rIlWsR-y8 Fans pay his wages, so he turns up and does his job, so there's no justification for booing someone for wanted to move on. Sol Campbell not relevant, he went to a the local rival, as captain and after saying he'd stay, completely different situation. |

No ex Arse players are ever booed are they - has there ever been 1 that hasn't been? Funny how its those that have spent years criticising him now stand up for him - I'd boo him for joining an obvious basket case of club atm when Pool look to be settling in for the long run. Oh hang on its the ££££££ isn't it?

Pathetic and low class,
Might make some players consider their future at Liverpool and also might have a negative affect on future transfers |

I wouldnt boo a player who has made 350 appearances for the club and has been there for 20 years
If the issue is that we didnt get a fee for him then why didnt the club sell him last year. They could have even sold him in January. They obviously put winning trophies as the priority and seemed OK with the fact that his contract was being run down Trents made a considerable personal investment in the After Academy Initiative where premier clubs release players - basically throwing young men on the scrapheap without any support. Many suffer mental health issues and the clubs dont appear to give a f5ck. Many of these players will have been at the academies for 10 years. Trent could have been one of those players given a different set of circumstances - e.g. a bad injury and where would loyalty have been there |

I think the other side of this is recognising just what a good job Slot has done. He's had this hanging over him all season, as well as VVD and Salah too, never mind being the new guy coming in and not having any new signings of note. A lesser coach would be looking to use them as excuses but he's managed to keep them focussed on the pitch. An amazing job really.
|
|
By:
Next season will see if Slot is up to the task. Not doubting him, but this season has been an absolute breeze with City failing and Arsenal failing to capitalise either. If Arsenal sign a decent striker then their efforts may improve and City are not going to sit back either. If he can conquer that and retain the PL then we're talking about a manager that deserves the credit this year is affording him.

Puts the bed the Scouse not English bollix, which was only a response to the Munich's Argentina chants.

The phrase "Puts the bed the Scouse not English bollix, which was only a response to the Munich's Argentina chants" is a complex statement referencing football fan culture and historical rivalries. Let's break it down:
"Puts the bed the Scouse not English bollix": This part is somewhat grammatically unusual but likely means something like "undermines" or "disproves the nonsense of 'Scouse not English'." "Scouse not English": This is a sentiment sometimes expressed by people from Liverpool (often called "Scousers"). It reflects a strong local identity and a feeling of being distinct from the rest of England, often stemming from historical, cultural, and political factors. It doesn't literally mean they aren't geographically in England but emphasizes their unique identity. "bollix": This is a British slang term (a less vulgar form of "bollocks") meaning nonsense, rubbish, or something considered wrong or untrue. "which was only a response to the Munich's Argentina chants": This claims that the "Scouse not English" sentiment (or perhaps some related negative behavior or chants from Liverpool fans) was solely a reaction to chants made by Manchester United fans referencing the Munich Air Disaster and Argentina. Munich Air Disaster: A tragic plane crash in 1958 that killed several Manchester United players and staff. It's a deeply sensitive topic for Manchester United supporters. Argentina chants: This part is less clear and potentially misremembered or a more obscure reference. It might refer to: Chants related to the Falklands War (1982) between the UK and Argentina, sometimes used in football rivalries due to perceived nationalistic undertones. Less likely, a specific incident involving Manchester United fans chanting about Argentinian players or events in a way that provoked Liverpool supporters. In essence, the statement argues that any expression of "Scouse not English" or negative actions from Liverpool fans in this context were merely a retaliation to Manchester United fans' offensive chants about the Munich Air Disaster, possibly intertwined with references to Argentina. However, it's crucial to consider the following: The "Scouse not English" sentiment has deeper roots than just football rivalry. It's connected to Liverpool's unique history, immigration patterns (particularly Irish), its industrial past, periods of economic hardship and perceived neglect by the central government, and a strong sense of community solidarity, especially in the face of adversity (like the Hillsborough disaster). Tit-for-tat chanting is a feature of intense football rivalries. While one set of offensive chants might provoke a response, it's rarely the sole cause of a long-standing sentiment or behavior. Both sets of fans have, unfortunately, engaged in offensive chanting related to tragedies. The specific link to "Argentina chants" as the sole trigger for a "Scouse not English" reaction related to the Munich disaster is debatable and might be an oversimplification or misrepresentation of events. While such chants could certainly fuel animosity, the broader "Scouse not English" identity and the tragic history of the Munich Air Disaster are separate, albeit sometimes intertwined, elements of the rivalry between Liverpool and Manchester United. In conclusion, the statement attempts to frame a complex issue of identity and rivalry as a simple cause-and-effect reaction to specific offensive chanting. While retaliatory chanting does occur, it's unlikely that the "Scouse not English" sentiment, or any related negative behavior, was only a response to "Munich's Argentina chants." The situation is more nuanced and rooted in deeper historical and cultural factors. Capisci? |

1. Puts to bed
2. I'm a scouser. I understand the scouse not english line. 3. It's got zero to do with Man Utd, never mind Munich chanting or some weird Argentina thing. It's not something reserved for games against Utd, or anyone. If I had to pick a specific thing, it would be used mostly against the FA for their part in the Hillsborough cover-up, so would be more visible at cup finals etc. 4. A Utd fan can correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the Argentina chants start after the 1998 World Cup. They were seen as support for Beckham who was getting dog's abuse but also as a fairly playful F U to the FA in general, who Ferguson had turned into perennial villains. 5. Capisce. You don't know me well enough to use the second person. |

sorry
6. What relevance does any of that have to booing Trent? |
|
By:
Doesn't it stem from the Thatcher era and her government not wanted to invest in the era after the Toxeth riots, her chancellor advising here not to try and make water flow up hill, managed decline at all that. Optically it's always looked like a huge victim complex thing the whole Scouse not English mantra for right or wrong. Time has moved on, Liverpool has since been European capital of culture and Thatcher is long since dead.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aVQQmHt8cFA Kind Regards. |

By:
Well I think it goes back a century or more really, but certainly Thatcher and the docks accelerated it and obviously Hillsborough and the establishment closing ranks was the cherry on top.
But certainly, we - more than most cities in the country, at least before the last few decades - are a city built on immigration. We've all got a link to Ireland or Wales a generation or two back. So we've always mocked the little englanders, cos their attitudes towards Liverpool fly in the face of their idea of patriotism. But in terms of LFC, I think it's used more against the FA and England team. |

That would pay 20-30 salaries for ancillary staff, not to be sniffed at in a deprived area, ask the Manc's!

Someone says there's no comparison to sol Campbell!... Of course there's a huge comparison, just Sol took his deceit and betrayal to a different planet...
I've heard Trent is gonna make an extra £20 million (sounds huge) but to him, at the end of his career will be peanuts... Is it worth it? Greedy cretin. |

Would you take a cut in wages to help your previous boss find a replacement for you? Total rubbish from football fans in general and scousers in particular, most probably not even having a job! Free transfer = more wages or signing on fee. The one bit of class from all this is the club itself. Didn't take the money, took the glory....priceless and classy! |
