that was some sight, audibly booing one of your own, what happened to You'll never Walk Alone, he's hardly joining United, Everton or a Prem rival, he's going to the biggest club in the world.

what's the point in booing him? comes across as classless, can only put it down to dented pride.
I don't see a problem. The player runs down his contract so he can go to the highest bidder, max his salary, while his current team gets no transfer fee. He's fully entitled to do that and it's just business. The fans pay his and every other player's wages - by giving that player stick, at the very least, it might make other players think twice about doing the same. The fans are fully entitled to do that and it's just business.

That's pretty much how I see it, too, GB. The 'love for the club' words seem at odds with the actions. The season's over, we can't finish any higher. The people paying his wages are fully entitled to let him know what they think, if that's what they think.
Fans of other clubs getting off on this are hilarious. As if they would behave any differently with the boot on the other foot and one of their star players heading off elsewhere on a free.

Fans contribute towards the wages, probably about a third (wild guess), possibly less, so I agree, they are entitled to a say. Yes, the booing was a bit of an eye-opener, but as Latalomne correctly implied, other fans would do the same. We did when Sol Campbell left on a free to Arsenal, but they're no angels themselves, giving Ashley Cole the moniker 'Cashley Cole' - Let's keep this real lads.

Yeah exactly. I don't think I'd have booed, but after a couple of beers and being in a big crowd, who knows. Trent has looked after himself at the end of the day. I'd have done the same thing in his shoes. But you can't just string the club and the fans along for months and not expect any blowback. He should just be taken out of the squad now for the last couple of games. An unnecessary distraction while we should be focussing on the celebrations.

Football's emotional not rational. That's what makes it what it is. Why should I care what some blokes on mega money I've never met do a couple of times a week? It's nonsense. But it's real. So the idea that fans should be cold and rational and park their emotions is for the birds. If you wanted to be cold and rational, you'd do something more productive with your time than follow a football team.

Sol Campbell not relevant, he went to a the local rival, as captain and after saying he'd stay, completely different situation.

No ex Arse players are ever booed are they - has there ever been 1 that hasn't been? I wouldnt boo a player who has made 350 appearances for the club and has been there for 20 years
If the issue is that we didnt get a fee for him then why didnt the club sell him last year. They could have even sold him in January. They obviously put winning trophies as the priority and seemed OK with the fact that his contract was being run down
Trents made a considerable personal investment in the After Academy Initiative where premier clubs release players - basically throwing young men on the scrapheap without any support. Many suffer mental health issues and the clubs dont appear to give a f5ck. Many of these players will have been at the academies for 10 years. Trent could have been one of those players given a different set of circumstances - e.g. a bad injury and where would loyalty have been there

I think the other side of this is recognising just what a good job Slot has done. He's had this hanging over him all season, as well as VVD and Salah too, never mind being the new guy coming in and not having any new signings of note. A lesser coach would be looking to use them as excuses but he's managed to keep them focussed on the pitch. An amazing job really.

Next season will see if Slot is up to the task. Not doubting him, but this season has been an absolute breeze with City failing and Arsenal failing to capitalise either. If Arsenal sign a decent striker then their efforts may improve and City are not going to sit back either. If he can conquer that and retain the PL then we're talking about a manager that deserves the credit this year is affording him.

The phrase "Puts the bed the Scouse not English bollix, which was only a response to the Munich's Argentina chants" is a complex statement referencing football fan culture and historical rivalries. Let's break it down:
"Puts the bed the Scouse not English bollix": This part is somewhat grammatically unusual but likely means something like "undermines" or "disproves the nonsense of 'Scouse not English'."
"Scouse not English": This is a sentiment sometimes expressed by people from Liverpool (often called "Scousers"). It reflects a strong local identity and a feeling of being distinct from the rest of England, often stemming from historical, cultural, and political factors. It doesn't literally mean they aren't geographically in England but emphasizes their unique identity. "bollix": This is a British slang term (a less vulgar form of "bollocks") meaning nonsense, rubbish, or something considered wrong or untrue.
"which was only a response to the Munich's Argentina chants": This claims that the "Scouse not English" sentiment (or perhaps some related negative behavior or chants from Liverpool fans) was solely a reaction to chants made by Manchester United fans referencing the Munich Air Disaster and Argentina.
Munich Air Disaster: A tragic plane crash in 1958 that killed several Manchester United players and staff. It's a deeply sensitive topic for Manchester United supporters.
Argentina chants: This part is less clear and potentially misremembered or a more obscure reference. It might refer to: Chants related to the Falklands War (1982) between the UK and Argentina, sometimes used in football rivalries due to perceived nationalistic undertones.
Less likely, a specific incident involving Manchester United fans chanting about Argentinian players or events in a way that provoked Liverpool supporters.
In essence, the statement argues that any expression of "Scouse not English" or negative actions from Liverpool fans in this context were merely a retaliation to Manchester United fans' offensive chants about the Munich Air Disaster, possibly intertwined with references to Argentina.
However, it's crucial to consider the following:
The "Scouse not English" sentiment has deeper roots than just football rivalry. It's connected to Liverpool's unique history, immigration patterns (particularly Irish), its industrial past, periods of economic hardship and perceived neglect by the central government, and a strong sense of community solidarity, especially in the face of adversity (like the Hillsborough disaster). Tit-for-tat chanting is a feature of intense football rivalries. While one set of offensive chants might provoke a response, it's rarely the sole cause of a long-standing sentiment or behavior. Both sets of fans have, unfortunately, engaged in offensive chanting related to tragedies.
The specific link to "Argentina chants" as the sole trigger for a "Scouse not English" reaction related to the Munich disaster is debatable and might be an oversimplification or misrepresentation of events. While such chants could certainly fuel animosity, the broader "Scouse not English" identity and the tragic history of the Munich Air Disaster are separate, albeit sometimes intertwined, elements of the rivalry between Liverpool and Manchester United.
In conclusion, the statement attempts to frame a complex issue of identity and rivalry as a simple cause-and-effect reaction to specific offensive chanting. While retaliatory chanting does occur, it's unlikely that the "Scouse not English" sentiment, or any related negative behavior, was only a response to "Munich's Argentina chants." The situation is more nuanced and rooted in deeper historical and cultural factors.

3. It's got zero to do with Man Utd, never mind Munich chanting or some weird Argentina thing. It's not something reserved for games against Utd, or anyone. If I had to pick a specific thing, it would be used mostly against the FA for their part in the Hillsborough cover-up, so would be more visible at cup finals etc.
4. A Utd fan can correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the Argentina chants start after the 1998 World Cup. They were seen as support for Beckham who was getting dog's abuse but also as a fairly playful F U to the FA in general, who Ferguson had turned into perennial villains.

Doesn't it stem from the Thatcher era and her government not wanted to invest in the era after the Toxeth riots, her chancellor advising here not to try and make water flow up hill, managed decline at all that. Well I think it goes back a century or more really, but certainly Thatcher and the docks accelerated it and obviously Hillsborough and the establishment closing ranks was the cherry on top.
But certainly, we - more than most cities in the country, at least before the last few decades - are a city built on immigration. We've all got a link to Ireland or Wales a generation or two back. So we've always mocked the little englanders, cos their attitudes towards Liverpool fly in the face of their idea of patriotism. But in terms of LFC, I think it's used more against the FA and England team.

The problem isn't with the player it is with Madrid, the route they have cottoned on to is realizing that players they want and are nearing the end of their contract they can simply let the player know that they want him and are prepared to wait for him rather than getting him earlier for a fee, that's solely on Madrid realizing their strength and playing on it.
Unless you expect the player to turn round and tell Madrid a year or two back that unless they pay for him then and sign him he won't come then there is nothing more the player can do and even in that case if the player went then he still would have gotten booed.

On Barcelona’s part, there is a story, also steeped in myth, which sums up the way they were perceived and treated by the regime. The story goes that, in 1943, after winning the first leg of a cup semi-final against Real Madrid 3-0, Barcelona’s players were paid a visit by one of Franco’s cronies, who reminded them that they were only allowed to play at all due to “the generosity of the regime”, and suggested in no uncertain terms that they ease off in the second leg.
Real Madrid went on to win that game 11-1, by far the biggest win in Clásico history. Again, it is difficult to ascertain the extent to which the story has been embellished, but it is hard to believe that such a scoreline could have come about entirely naturally. Aside from this, Barcelona were also – like Bilbao – forced to change their name and were ordered to remove the Catalan flag from their crest.
Against this backdrop of persecution

If non Liverpool fans say they wouldn't boo a player especially a local player who runs their contract down so they can move free to another club then they are being disingenuous.
Players fancy moves for various reasons I get that.
But there is a way to do it. Suarez wanted to go to Barca so a deal was done where he signed a new contract, played for another year and got the transfer for £50m.
Harry Kane got his transfer, but signed contracts so Spurs still got a huge fee.
TAA has been quite sneaky, stringing fans all along this season with no intention of signing.

So fair play to him.
Fans boo a lot of ex players who have moved to clubs for huge transfer fees and moved to clubs with chances of winning Prem league and play Champions league football, even possibilities of winning it, which their current club can't offer.

If Real Madrid really want him then course they would pay a fee if he is in contract.
Sign a contract, agreement if say £80m is offered it has to be accepted. If they wont pay it they don't really value him. As lots of other top European clubs would pay it.
I actually don't think it will work out at RM for him to be honest. The fans there can be really brutal. Jude Bellingham was booed at the weekend for a poor game.
Trent is known to make some big defensive blunders, one of those against Barca in an El Classico or a big champions league game and they will quickly turn against him.

Madrid know they are the one club that everyone wants to play for and can comb the market looking for players that are a year or two away from the end of their contract and simply tell those players, we want you and will take you at the end of your contract.
It is then down to their current club to force the issue earlier, let the world know what is going on, but unless the player wants to take the moral high ground and inform Madrid that unless they pay up early he won't be coming then there is little that can be done.
The likely truth is that Liverpool were happy to keep him for longer and it is also likely true that if you asked the fans what they would want, sell him two years ago and get a fee or let him go for free two years later there would be a massive amount of fans that would want him for longer and then let him go for nothing....you can't have it both ways.

But Duffy TAA has known for prob 2 years what his plan was to move for nothing.
The club management are no idiots. They would have been trying to get him to sign a contract for that time period.
But if the player refuses there is nothing you can do.
Also he hasn't been open and honest with the fans, stringing them along all this time with the sole intention of walking on a free.
As mentioned you can always sign a new contract with clauses in if you want to. As mentioned Suarez did this, Harry Kane didn't run his contract down for a free move to Bayern Munich. There is an honourable way to do these things.
If Madrid really want a player then they will pay, they have to if in a long term contract. Especially if the fee is below true market value.

It is a lack of awareness by the "fans". Almost all players have no connection to the city and you can extend that to say no connection to the club. Fans are supporting professional athletes motivated by income just like they themselves go to work to earn income.

To reiterate, the issue is with Madrid's approach, if they don't want to pay and they know the player wants to come and will come they know they can sit tight, what's the point of Trent signing a contract, what clause can you put in that will force Madrid to pay? there are none because the player won't allow a clause that forces some kind of payment because he doesn't want to jeopardize the move but you can't blame him for that.
Trent would have been happy to go and Liverpool to receive a fee but Madrid won't pay, the only way would be for the player to turn around and tell Madrid that unless they pay up he won't come but you need to be a Messi or Ronaldo for that to carry any weight.
Again, if the player wants to go and Madrid know they can wait, what can the player do to force them to pay?
Liverpool fans should think about all the years of service where he's contributed to winning many trophies and where they haven't had to fork out for a full back, all of that has a monetary value.

I'd agree with most of that, but not sure Trent is quite so innocent.
Got to remmber he gets an eight-figure signing on fee in lieu of the transfer fee. That's what makes this move so attractive. Trent bags #£20M and Madrid get an £80M player for a quarter the cost.
I think to do with the booing, people are simply pissed off at him stringing the club and fans along. Mo and Virgil did the same but that was just a negotiating tactic to get the best deal, Trent will have known for probably two years that he was leaving but still acted as if he was talking to the club in good faith.
Fans feel like he's mugged them off.

His position was impossible, he knew he was going but also knew that Madrid wouldn't pay, again, what was he supposed to do, perhaps he should have said a couple of years back that he had no intention of signing a new deal, that may have focussed the minds on Madrid's and Liverpool's side of things but the problem he had was that he didn't want to pi55 Madrid off as he wants to play for them so he was in an awkward spot.
Liverpool could have been far more open about selling him but they didn't want the fans against them and gambled on the increasing pressure on the player would see him crack and stay.

What would Liverpool fans have said a couple years back, go for a fee back then or go for free in 2 years....we all know the answer to that one.
The bottom line if the truth be known, is that nothing that has been discussed is "really" the issue here, the real issue is that the player is daring to leave the club....how dare he!! IMO

Why does it matter that Trent wanted to leave on a free to enrich himself, he cost the club nothing, they got more out of him than vice versa, it's the clubs fault, they let their 3 best players run their contracts down so that they were then in the position of power, that's on them. Should have publicly let it be known that they had offered him a contract and he's turned it down, that then puts the pressure on him to either sign a new deal or agree to be sold so they could get something for him, to allow all 3 to potentially leave for nothing is just poor management by those above. But they don't really care about the money side of it do they, it has to be an ego thing, their star player moving to another big club when Liverpool at the top of their game, the whole 'he's mugged us of thing' is just a nonsense, he hasn't cost any fan a single penny, it's not their money.

club was very wary of committing to big bucks on declining talents, that's why VVD and Salah allowed to slide...in fact, they were initially in 2 minds whether to commit to Salah's last extension 2 yrs ago @ 31, as it went against there usually M.O.
Players who won't sign a new contract and run down their contracts are shafting their club and fans for their own financial reward so deserve getting booed.

^ so you wouldn't run down your own contract at your own workplace knowing you'd be offered a lot more money by another company at the end of it? talking our your arse
Liverpool could have got millions for Salah and VVD 2 years ago but risked not doing so by allowing them to run their contracts down, even at their ages could have easily have been flogged to Saudi at least. Whatever they put into Trent as a homegrown player, they got more out of him as a player, that assist alone against Barcelona and helping them get to the final gave them a few extra million. Kind Regards.

Spot on! It's a workplace even if it is the fans place of worship!
F Me Liverpool won the title! Well done Liverpool FC meanwhile after how many years Arteta has still not signed a forward!
Would you be a Liverpool fan or an Arsenal fan right now? If anyone has a right to be bitter and twisted it is Arsenal fans!
Again I ask how many Scousers backed their team to win the title this year? You lot should be sucking the stains out of TAA's g-string!

They would have had no idea they'd have gone on to win the league at all, to think they deliberately played it like that is laughable considering they were even favs to the win the league, that's not how top clubs operate, they much more often than not operate as proper businesses, if they feel they're going to lose millions in player re-sales when a player is nearing the end of their contract, they sell. To have all 3 running down their contracts is shoddy management, the different in 'total payment' for finishing 1st or 2nd is negligible especially when compared to the excess millions they'd have go for selling, they missed out so that's by the by anyway in a financial sense. Kind Regards.

More than likely they allowed VVD and Salah to run down their contracts because they were expecting and wanting to sell them in a rebuild, the fact that they have now won the league and how momentum has swung toward the players they have been backed into a corner and have been forced to give them new deals, both these players we can expect to see regress from now on leaving the club in a position they worried about being in.

mesmerised , football contracts are on a completely different level to other jobs. He could've signed a contract so he had some worth to the club who've made him a very rich man and Real could've paid a fee. He just wants to pocket the lot.
as for me talking out of my arse, you'd certainly know, you're an expert at it.

I talk more sense than you'll ever talk you silly tart, he owes Liverpool nothing, he gave them everything already and then some, cost the club buttons in terms of player development given he went on to help them earn millions with the success they've had, and you're crying about him leaving on a free, as if it means anything to the fans who are not out of pocket, it's the club fault for allowing their employee under contract to have his value depreciate as each month ticked by til it expired allowing him to leave on a free. The onus is on the club not the player, all he done was honour his contract. Probably too simple for you to understand. Kind Regards

'shafting the club'
Do you not understand how many millions Trent has earnt Liverpool over the last few years ? A fat transfer fee is just a bonus, it's the club fault.

Trent free to do as he pleases but at his last contract extension he could have had certain clauses about release to certain named clubs for a relatively moderate fee to give him freedom of movement without L'pool losing a massive asset on a free..
it splits opinion..football isn't a normal job at the top level with the sums involved..clearly the L'pool fanbase even among attendees was very split (some respecting the decision others not) ..always dangerous to overplay the local lad card (means more etc) and then not show any real respect to it..

I don't think the club themselves are overly upset. They know the score. We've picked up a few good players on the cheap. We're even in the auction for Wirtz now. That's football. So the heads in the boardroom will know and understand.
But this is about the fans and their reaction. I've covered this before, but it's simply just about emotions imo. The vast majority of us would do the same as Trent really. I know I would. But at the same time, I'd fully expect the fans to be pissed off and express it. You can't expect to string people along for two years and have them politely applaud you at the end. He'll get over it. The fans will get over it too. That's football.

Well, I don't mean in the way Trent will be welcomed back with open arms in the future. He's blotted his copybook for sure. And if he joins Utd when he's clapped out that probably won't help either. But it'll all be fish and chip paper soon enough.
My big hope is he's removed from the squad for the next two games, particularly the last one. These are all about celebrating now. No need to have it spoiled by people wanting to boo someone. He's done now. Let's just go our separate ways.
