I don't think you can blame Kroenke for the transfer policy and I don't think he's the biggest problem either.  You could blame him if he had any input into it. The model used is similar to Liverpool, Spurs, Chelsea and is common in modern football where the manager doesn't decide on his own and I suspect it was introduced because the Kroenkes weren't happy with Wenger making all the recruitment decisions on his own and rightly so. There is no way Emery didn't have significant input into transfers. Where are you getting that from? It is more likely that he has the largest input into identifying who he wants.

He would have been well aware of Saliba, Guendouzi and Pepe from his time in France where they all played against his team and he worked with Luiz at PSG. Emery on the Torreira signing:' A midfielder with great quality, I have enjoyed watching his performances for Sampdoria in the past two seasons, and we all saw him do very well for Uruguay in the World Cup.'

If he didn't have the players to play out from the back then he shouldn't have played out from the back, especially when pressed high up the pitch. Then you are effectively asking the worst footballers in your team to play like central midfielders in your own final third. That is suicidal and it is totally on him. He didn't even play Torreira in his best position when the defence was crying out for protection. Absolute nonsense that he couldn't recruit the players he wanted.

The biggest problem is the mess Wenger left. He persistently stuck with mediocre players and gave them new contracts, refused to spend money when it was there and then filled the squad with panic buys, allowed contracts to be run down because of his out of date wage structure and the straw that broke the camel's back was that Ozil contract which has tied up a monstrous amount of wages for a club which has lost its Champions League revenue and has a squad full of players on wages based on having that revenue, players that can't be got rid of because nobody will pay a fee for them plus the same wages they are on. That is going to take at least 4-5 years to fix and we are less than 1.5 years into it.

We have the 5th highest wage bill, only because Liverpool have overtaken us due to the amount of money they have made from CL TV money, consequent increased commercial revenue and shrewd transfer dealings. We are within £25m a year in wages of City, Pool and Chelsea. We have a much higher wage bill than Spurs and Leicester. The Kroenkes spend enough money on the team. The club is massive and generates enough revenues to compete even without CL football but it has been mismanaged by the likes of Gazidis and Wenger primarily. You can blame the Kroenkes for not firing both of them sooner but the new structure has football people running the club and is a move in the right direction.

those managers would at least have won a trophy, some say does it matter if it had just been a league or FA cup, of course it would because success breeds success, it shows you can get over the line, creates a feel good factor etc,

I don't understand how people keep pushing that line.

What counts for the biggest clubs is how competitive they are in the Premier League and Champion's League.

We have seen Arsenal win 3 FA Cups and it brought zero improvement in the 2 competitions that really matter. Mourinho won League Cup/Europe with United but they did not challenge for the title or CL.

The last 2 Tottenham managers to actually win a trophy there were both regarded as total failures due to mid table mediocrity in the league.

I agree with most of Lurka's post.

Arsenal are hardly operating on a shoestring. Lacazette is their 3rd most expensive forward and he cost more than all of Liverpool's front three. Mustafi I think was something like the 7th most expensive centre back in history.

One thing I think is unfair is to blame them both for players running their contracts down and also for the huge Ozil contract. Seems to me you can either give out huge contracts to every half decent player or let them run down. The alternative to letting Ramsay go was to give him an even bigger contract than Ozil (which he got from Juventus).

Disagree with just about everything you said Darren inc Pochettino who fell out with Levy over lack of investment.

Lurka has nailed it imo. Wenger and Emery both have one thing in common. They never learned from mistakes and continued to do the same things when they clearly were not working.

As for running down contracts its not easy to resolve. Ramsey was a fair to middling player, certainly not worth paying a massive contract to keep. Gazidis and Wenger offered Ozil a ridiculous contract. You either are held to ransom or let them run down their contracts. Choose your poison.

Getting a top quality manager is very important now and the board need to get the best that will come to us. No cheap options should be considered.

They were totally unprepared for the jump in transfer fees and wages after 2016 when the new PL deal came in and clubs like City and PSG were inflating the whole market, but it was predictable that that would happen because the new PL deal had been agreed by then and there would be an extra £600m+ a year in the PL market alone. That jump has also massively increased the incentive for and likelihood of every player to run down their contract, especially players aged 27+.

The way to deal with it is to tie them down before they have less than 2 years left by offering extensions or else sell them, even on the cheap if necessary. Once you go beyond that you are in the no man's land of having to let them leave for free or pay them monster wages to stay. A player will simply refuse to sign for anyone if they get close to the end of their contract because they can effectively keep the transfer fee themselves if they wait and transfer fees and wages are bigger than ever, ie more of an incentive and the last chance of a monster pay day for a player aged 27+

Re the Ozil deal, they either didn't understand the FFP rules or they did and did it anyway. Either way it's criminal.

I think Mislintat was a good appointment and was instrumental in getting Auba to sign. I also think Tierney, Martinelli, Guendouzi, Torreira, Leno, Saliba are all good signings. All of them are the right age and should be worth more than we paid for them at some stage or already but most aren't yet because of Emery. Pepe may prove to be over time but awful so far and probably won't be worth the money.

If you ask PSG and Valencia fans about Emery they will tell you he is a cowardly, overly-cautious manager with increasingly negative tactics as games progress. He is a Europa league level manager at best and is no better than late-stage Wenger. The PSG players overruled him on his formation as he wanted to play a 4-2-3-1 formation instead of the 4-3-3 they ended up playing and a lot of them blamed his tactics for going out of the Champions League against Barca and then Real Madrid, inviting them on to dominate possession and turn the ties on their head. He was exactly the same at Arsenal, look at the amount of shots we were conceding under him.
By:
darren_discombobulates_sports

You take Torreira for example, he started him in just 29 of the 51 Prem games he was in charge of, that doesn't sound like he really signed him, of course he would say nice words about him, that's what good managers do, he wasn't going to criticse him. Then there's Ceballos, 15 million loan fee and he barely gets a kick, Emery would have known him but looks like he didn't really want him either.

Vinai and Raul both gave a joint interview pre season talking in depth about how the club is run and about transfers and left me with the impression Emery had little input into transfers, "‘And if I look back to the last transfer window, with Bernd Leno, Matteo Guendouzi, Lucas Torreira, Papa Sokratis and others, we think we bring in players that can make a really big impact. And we believe that those players, and many more, can make a bigger impact next season......He continued: ‘We need to make sure we are really disciplined. A good example of that is senior players that aren’t towards the end of their careers, we need to make sure that those players, when they’ve got two years left on their contract, we’re making the difficult decisions. ‘We’re either renewing those players’ contracts, or we’re selling those players. So we’re going to have to be brave with those decisions along the way, because we can’t be in a situation where we are allowing players to walk out the door for free unless they are coming towards the end of their career.’

If you read between those lines you can see that they are in full control of the revolving door of who comes in and out and when.

Emery could hardly start instructing his players to lump it up field old school style, professional players on big wages should be capable of playing football, you can't really legislate for some of the individual mistakes made this season, the players were not good enough. If Klopp / Simeone / Conte came in with the same group they could only make marginal improvements with the same squad - too many players not at the standard needed to compete at the very top, how is Mustafi still at the club, he's the worst Arsenal defender I can remeber since the days of Senderos and Dejourou.

Kroenke is without a doubt the biggest problem at Arsenal and has been since he took over, he takes little interest, allowed stagnation to happen for many years, gave Wenger a pay rise when we started to go backwards, refused to make decisive and quick managerial when needed, he only acted when his pocket was felt as we slipped out of the CL and empty seats started to become more and more visable.

The annual salaries of some players was/is ridiclous which resulted in us being snookered when it comes to a)moving players on when needed and b)making future signings because of FFP, which incidentally PSG, City and Madrid seem to get around! Ozil on 350k a week, Xhaka on 100k a week, Pepe from Lille for 75 million and out on 140k a week when most Arsenal fans had never heard of him, Luiz way past his best on 125k a week, Kolasinac on 100k a week - and it goes on and has done for many years, superstar wages for fairly average players, Bayern seem to do it right, they get genuine top quality on similar or lesser wages that what we pay, this all comes from the top. If it wasn't all sanctioned by Kroneke than that's an even bigger damning indictment on him, remember he also had the fans turning on each other inside the stadium when it came to protests/banners, fights broke out, because of his lack of leadership, I don't blame Wenger, if you're offered 8 million a year to do a job you love you're not going to say no.

Tober, when you say that that the biggest clubs are judged by the league and Europe, I don't how Tottenham falls into that catagory? Tottenham have not won a title in my lifetime and I'd guess yours, they're relatively new to the top tier European competition and haven't won the biggest domestic cup for 30 years, I would have thought given trophies would be welcomed, to me it seems people make way too many excuses for him basically because he's a nice guy, same way they did with Wenger, Pochettinho has never won anything yet people so readily pat him on the back, Klopp and Mourinho are managers who have out performed their resources at times in comparison to the competition at clubs like Porto in Europe, Inter Milan at home and in Europe and and Dortumund who are paupers compared to what Bayern could pay in wages. He may have made noises this season about transfers but didn't say much when going a few transfer windows without signing a single player, I just can't imagine top managers doing that, they'd move on quicker. They were heavily reliant on Kane the whole time he was there and that combined with good timing, United and Arsenal were both simultaneously in demise allowing them to enter the top 4 consistently. They've made a great move with Mourinho because he is a real winner and now I can see them challenging for trophies.

Also think it's poor leadership to literally have nobody in place of managerial experience ready to replace Emery and instead they seem to have made a cynical move in putting in Ljungberg because they know that that gets the heat of their back straight away as he's a genuine Arsenal legend who fans will not turn no matter how he performs, not to the same audible levels they did with Emery anyhow, I don't understand how these kind of decisions or lack of good decision making can be made in such a multi million pound industry!

btw I definitely do not think Emery is of the same mould or class as the top top managers, but he is better and has proven to be better than Pochettinho and was never the main problem at the club, the players were simply not good enough to compete with the bbra, he once said that he never bought Arsenal to win trophies, he's actual words! that let the cat out of the bag. The only thing I agree with you is when you say those who sold their shares to him were shameful, hard to see us ever getting back to 98-06 levels again with him in charge, we're just a profitable business to him, he probably finds it funny we all argue and get upset over a game of soccerball whilst his on his ranch in California.

As much as we don't want Kroenke at the club, he is not to blame for all of our ills.

Kroenke is a businessman and would admit he know's feck all about football. That's why he employs the likes of Gazidis,Raul, Edu etc to make the footy decisions for him. The fact that it took too long to sack Wenger and Emery must be laid at the feet of the above mentioned.

I cannot see how Emery would have had no input on transfers. It's vital that any manager likes to choose his targets and makes no sense for Raul to tell Emery 'these are who we are buying so get on with it'.

Is the Brighton game a 6 pointer ?

Fair point and it pains me to say it, but it feels that way. If we win, we’ll be up to sixth; lose or draw and we’ll pretty much remain as we are. But, the table is incredibly congested between Everton on 14 points in 18th and Man U in sixth on 21. I’ve not seen any thing like that before. And as has been pointed out by some on here other than me, our next 6 games look horrendous given our current lack of confidence. This season could easily see us finish lower than 1995 (12th) or, whisper if you dare, as bad as 1976 (17th).

'If you read between those lines you can see that they are in full control of the revolving door of who comes in and out and when.' You are talking nonsense here, all that says is that they are there to avoid the mistakes made under Wenger and Gazidis by not letting players run down contracts and signing younger players. There is no doubt that that places some constraints any any manager in having to sign players within that framework but there is nothing in that to indicate that the manager is not the primary driver of who is signed.

Most of the players he signed he would have known about better than anyone else at the club. You can jump to the conclusion that he had nothing to do with them but there is no basis for that and it is highly unlikely. If Kroenke was meddling like Abramovich did with Shevchenko it would be more likely but he has nothing to do with the footballing side.
By:

There's no clear evidence to suggest that all signings are the managers's signings, I'm just reading between the lines, in their joint interview they consistently referenced 'we', and never once mentioned Emery and that the signings were his call at all, then you look at how things have panned out with the underusing of some of the players brought in, same thing happened at Brighton with Houghton who did not play the big money signings those above him made.

At the beginning of the season, Emery gave it away a bit when he was asked if the new signings made Arsenal's squad better " the Spaniard said: “I don’t know.

“Our idea is to improve on last year, to improve our work, improve our players, improve our challenge, to improve in achieving our target but I don’t know if we are better or not."

bizarre that you would make new signings that were supposedly your own then claim that he didn't know if the squad was now stronger.

On the scout that left

According to club sources, Sanllehi, the former director of football at Barcelona, favoured a recruitment policy based on his extensive network of contacts throughout Europe, while Mislintat had been tasked by Gazidis to follow the kind of analytical and stats-based approach that saw 19-year-old midfielder Matteo Guendouzi join from French second-division club Lorient and 22-year-old Uruguay international Lucas Torreira arrive from Sampdoria.

Contrary to some reports, Mislintat and Arsenal manager Unai Emery have enjoyed a very good working relationship, sources have told ESPN FC, with mooted interest in Mislintat from Bayern Munich also not having played a part in the backroom upheaval either. However, the German's position has been further undermined by the club's willingness to appoint a technical director, a move that would amount to a de-facto demotion.

This again indicates that Emery had little control over transfers and the next manager will have to operate under the same regime.

I watched Ljungberg's presser pre Brighton, he speaks very well and has identified the areas he wants to improve on, deserves some more time to judge, hope he does really well, one of my favourite players.Excited

You transfer list him and put him up for sale at a reduced fee if necessary and if he doesn't want to go then you let him leave. You do not sign him at the end of the contract. We are paying Ozil £18m a year and we are getting zero value for money. We will end up paying another second-rate manager a lot less than that.
By:
lurka
When: 05 Dec 19 21:29
Ozil was 29 when Wenger offered him that deal. Makes it all the worse as he would never have a resale value at that age. We didn't get value for money for when he was on his original wages and Wenger knew he wouldn't be there for long afterwards and that another manager mightn't find him useful.

The quote from Raul above about transfer policy and players running down their contracts is the way to do it. The club have learned and hopefully won't get stitched up like that again. You can sign younger players on longer deals and they are less likely to do what Ozil did. Older players want that last big payday before they can't earn top wages any more.

'If he doesn't want to go you let him leave'

How does that work ?

A player with 2 years left can turn down any transfer request.

There is nothing the club can do other than 'sit him in the stands', in which case you have given a guy a 4 year deal, stopped using him halfway through, still have to pay his wages, and then he leaves for nothing.
By:

Yes that can happen but most players want to play and unless they are on wages they can't get near elsewhere they will leave. If Wenger wanted to keep Ozil he should have offered him a pay rise long before he had less than two years left.  What he did in the alternative was criminal. He wasn't even worth a pay rise in the first place.

Don't even get a new manager effect out of these players. They are all idiots with zero footballing intelligence. Headless chickens who think they all have to attack when we need a goal.  I would only keep Auba, Leno, Tierney, Martinelli, Pepe (only because he deserves more time to adapt and it would be stupid to sell him now). What the hell was he doing playing Ozil and Auba out wide and Willock in the centre?

I've been saying it for years, Bellerin is an awful defender and should be nowhere near a back 4. But he seems to give a shít and speaks with a cockney accent so the fans love him. Another Wenger defender and a complete liability - get rid ASAP. Judging by his interview after the match he is completely clueless about how bad we were - another idiot with zero intelligence. The squad is packed with them.

I want them to go for a defensive manager more than ever now. And they need to move quickly because Freddie can't motivate these players and seems to rate his academy players as much better than they are. None of them are good enough. We don't have time for that sort of nonsense. Not 1 team in this league are fraid of us. They know there are goals if they have a go at us, that needs to be sorted out for once and for all.

Allegri was quoted today in Milan as saying he is learning English but won't be managing again til Summer. They could do worse than paying a manager with PL experience a few million for 6 months.

I think we have to accept that this is our level now. We are not a top 4 or even a top6 outfit although the dollar charged for a seat tells a different story. This is a mess that has been years in the making. It needs clearing out from top to bottom resetting and then we can go again. The sad part is we have become a laughing stock for the rest of the premiership and the way it is going we will do well to finish in the top half of the table.

Do i think we are in danger of sinking even further down into the swamp ? Yes i do unless players such as Ozil are taken out of this squad completely. It is a shambles. I dont have the answers but i do know what isnt going to work and that is the formation / players which are currently being given the job to do. Every player needs to defend when required,. Be strong. The days of us carrying luxury players is a million miles away.

These problems are deep rooted and yes we can look back and say that good ebening inherited dog shoite from the previous regime but tactically he was even worse than that previous mob in its latter days.

Not a job that is going to appeal to anyone of any consequence especially if they are not given carte blanche to build a fcuking great bonfire and stick a hell of a lot of deadwood on top of it and burn it to the ground then start from scratch to rebuild the team.

a) kroenke fcks off and someone with ambition takes over

b) the team is once and for all de wengerised with every last memory of that non competitive/weak mentality era gone , this will take at least 200 mio of new players (and probably more) and this wont happen unless a) does

It's not that simple. You can't just buy a club and pump money into it any more, unless you do what City do and have related companies giving you sponsorhip deals worth 8 times their market value. Kroenke can't pay a manager more than a certain amount due to wage restrictions and wages being tied up by Wenger and Gazidis. For the same reason he can't give a manager lots to spend or sign big names unless he can convince some of the dross to leave and nobody is going to pay them as much. We have a wage bill of something like £240m+ which is about £100m higher than Leicester and Spurs. It is probably £100m a year too high for a EL club.

Kroenke is spending nearly all the resources the club has on the team. He is not the problem. I used to think he was but I don't any more, Wenger was the main problem with his refusal to spend what was available, letting top players leave for buttons, filling the squad with overpaid mugs on CL wages and signing abysmal defenders for years. You can blame Kroenke for not getting rid sooner but Wenger had earned his chance to get us back to CL and it wasn't an easy decision to get rid of him.

I would keep Torreira. He is an important player and a good player. But his head has been turned and I doubt he cares about how he plays for us any more. Napoli and Atletico are apparently interested in him in January and I think he wants out in January. How many of our players would attract the interest of top CL clubs? They are not the ones we should be getting rid of but we probably will to free up wages and funds.

When: 06 Dec 19 12:33
Kroneke is by far and away the biggest problem at the club, it all stems from him going back years.

He took over the club in 2008, by that time Arsenal had not won the league for four years, but I would say even at that point, as unusual as it is amongst all the other big clubs in Europe, who would have sacked their manager by then, it was for me and most fans still to early to to move him on, he had built up enough credit in the bank, but 10 year later to in 2018! it's unforgivable - and the sole reason why Kroenke never pulled the trigger is simply because of money, Wenger was delivering CL football, he was given a pay rise, Kroneke had zero interest in winning, he said so.

And now the mess you see before is all because of the remnants of the Wenger era lingers on, the players still here on wages no other club will take on and good players gone for peanuts or in some cases, nothing, like Ramsey who is better than what is here now.

Salaries are the other reason why Kroneke is the biggest problem, we have both hands tied behind our backs because he has sanctioned huge annual salaries for years for mediocre players because he knows nothing about football and neither did the people he hired like Ivan the terrible, the FFP restrictions are his fault for giving Ozil 18.2 mil a year, Luiz 6.5 mil a year who is way past his best, Mustafi, 90k a year, you couldn't give those two players away, it was/is Kroenke's responsibilty as an owner to know what is going on at his own club, what his own Chief Exectuve, Gazidis, was up to and the current replacements, and then make quick decisive decisions like any respectable owner of a big club would. You can't keep spunking huge wages on average players put you hands in the air and say look I am spending, that's not good ownership, it's poor decision making, Bayern are a great example of a club who have football people in charge making consistent and excellent recruitment decisions on wages that doesn't cripple them.

As a reminder, these are all the players we've bought since 2008, a reminder of how poor recruitment has been, there were some diamonds in the rough, like Cazorla, Ozil (quality is there but never consistently played in his right position )Auba, Sanchez on the whole, Ox I liked, but the rest would not get into any top team in Europe at any time, not the first team anyway. Very poor recruitment for years and year on the cheap.

What I will say for Wenger is wages given to certain players were not his fault, he did not have the power to make those kind of decisions, he may have recommended it, but that was never his job. The blame goes to the money men only. When you have an owner that simply doesn't take much interest in what is really going on, you can't expect the club to be successful.

I think Simeone would be a very good appointment, he may not speak English but he can speak Spanish with 4-5 players who native tongue is Spanish/Portuguese and use a translator in the meantime. Unfortunately I don't think our board and owner will make such a bold selection.

You are talking absolute nonsense. You can't criticise Kroenke for knowing nothing about football and then say the footballing decisions were his fault. Make up your mind. He doesn't have a clue and left it in the hands of well paid people like Wenger and Gazidis who were supposed to have a clue. Wenger recommended the Ozil deal, he called him 'a special player', even though he wasn't worth the wages he was on before the deal the fans were lukewarm at best about him. When Kroenke realised the mess Wenger was making he changed the structure and put Mislintat in to identify new players and took transfer power away from him. When he realised Gazidis had made a mess he put Raul in, a guy who knows football and especially how to get deals done and over the line. Gazidis was as clueless as Woodward and came from a similar non-football background.

The focus is now on signing younger players and avoiding the mistakes Wenger and Gazidis made in allowing contracts to be run down and high wages to be given to underperforming players and trying to unravel Wenger's mess in the process. The Liverpool owners don't have a clue about football either, they put people in place who do and trust them just like Kroenke did and they got it wrong before they got Klopp and the others in place just like Kroenke has. You can't blame Kroenke for what Wenger and Gazidis did without holding the two of them 95% responsible as they were 95% responsible for the footballing and financial decisions. Even today he acts on the recommendation of Edu and Raul because he doesn't know football.

Every single year Gazidis told us there was money to spend but Wenger only spent it, if at all, at the death of the window usually when fans were screaming at him to spend after poor results. Panic buys left right and centre. He told us every year that his squad was good enough and refused to spend the money available every year. He spent £10m on Cech the Summer before Leicester won the league and told us his squad was good enough to win the league. He spent about £100m net the Summer after Leicester won the league on Mustafi, Xhaka and Lucas Perez but I suppose that's all Kroenke's fault? He had no problem spending big in his latter years when he was under pressure to keep his job.

Korenke did not take control of the club in 2008. He initially invested for a minority stake in 2007, took control in 2011 and became sole owner in 2018.

Simeone is apparently on €20m+ a year at Atletico and is one of, if not the, highest paid manager in the world.

He does know nothing about football, but he should obviously have known that the people he put in charge to run the club were making poor decisions over and over, he should have known how poor value for money many of the players were, like Arteta who was on 125k a week, not sure why this is difficult to understand, the person at the very top is responsible for what goes on his company, you don't need to be an expert in football to know that the football club you own is not progressing over many years, it was stagnant for many years, and he did nothing to improve this because he didn't care about winning, that's why he is the biggest problem.

You really think with a different owner Wenger would have stayed all them years? Gazidis would have stayed all them years? Ramsey could have run down his contract and left for nothing? Van Persie would have been sold to a title rival? Ozil would be given a crazy 350k a week contract?

Absolutely no chance, the owner could have stopped all that by either intervening and saying no or sacking the people in put in place to direct control these things but he never did, he is the biggest problem.

Yes it wasn't 08 he had that power but he has been in position long enough to have made key changes,  Hill wood once said of Kroeneke "“Call me old-fashioned but we don’t need Kroenke’s money and we don’t want his sort.”".

I think it's worth mentioning again that Kroeneke once admitted he did not buy Arsenal to win trophies.

Arsenal are 5 points from relegation and 10 points off of 4th, given how much money Arsenal could lose if they were relegated and how much value would be wiped off the club, I'm sure even Kroenke would now realise that buying out Simeone's contract and offering him what he's worth would be a good move. We spent that kind of money of average players before, might as well spend that sort on a top class manager!

You do not understand the FFP rules if you think we have the money to buy out Simeone or any decent manager's contract. You should probably familiarise yourself with them. You are not allowed to increase the wage bill by more than a certain amount a year unless the money comes from non-TV sources. Wenger tied most or all of it up for the following year a few months before he left and we didn't have any new commercial deals coming in that Summer. That ensured that we couldn't replace him with a top manager and we still can't.

He spent £100m on Xhaka, Mustafi and Lucas Perez and we haven't got top 4 since. But hold Kroenke more responsible for that if you think so.

I don't think it would have been much different under a different owner because Wenger had legendary status with fans and any owner would have been slow to fire him. A lot of fans didn't want him gone and a lot of them would even take him back today. It wouldn't be the first time a football club haven't got the right people in to do the job. The league is full of them. Levy took 15 years to get it right. The Liverpool owners took 5 years before they got it right. United are 6 years and counting and they can afford anyone they want.

I know what Hill-Wood said, you've already quoted that and I already told you that Hill-Wood sold his shares to Kroenke.

The fact is Wenger and Gazidis were the day to day managers of the club and are 95% responsible for the mess it's in today. But you can concentrate on the 5% if you want. If you don't have a clue about football you get people in who do and you go with their judgment and get rid of them if it's not working. That's what Kroenke did and still does and it's what the Liverpool owners do too. And he's got football people running the club off the pitch now like Liverpool do. I don't think he's as concerned with winning as they are but the club spends more than enough on the team for it to be competitive for the league and Chmpions League.

If he doesn't care about winning trophies then why is he paying a quarter of a billion a year in wages to finish below Leicester and Spurs who spend £100m less each every season? Surely he'd have offloaded players and got that wage bill down long ago and not spent what he could last Summer? It was Wenger who was less concerned with winning the league. He hasn't been concerned with even challenging for it since before Kroenke arrived. He had all the money he needed to strengthen the defence and by a proper DM and challenge for over a decade and he wasn't ársed. He preferred to spend it all on attacking players and play nice football instead.

I know you're not allowed to increase your wage bill annually by a certain amount and I am familary with FFP but not to anorakish levels as I support a football club not a balance sheet, you can structure deals like PSG with Neymar to get around FFP, if not possible then fair enough, maybe next season if a lot of deadwood is offloaded

That was not the second time I posted the Hill wood quote it was the first time.

Hill wood sold what amounted to around 500 shares to Kroenke because it was selling it to him or Usmanov and he decided Kroenke was the best of two bad bets. Usmanov was presenting himself as a free spending Roman Abrahimovic type.

Every company has a structure, the owner puts that structure in place, Kroenke had control from 2011 and could have made the key changes then but he didn't because quite simply the club was profitable, he did not maintain the status quo because it would have difficult given Wenger's status, that is laughable, he kept it as it was because of money and that is the reason why he has always been the biggest problem at the club, he chose money over success, you can be profitable and have success at the same time, but that didn't interest him as he said, Wenger and Gazidis should have been sacked years before they were, or in Ivan's case, he simply left.

You keep saying Wenger spent this and that, tied us up and now we're screwed - Wenger was a football manager, he does not make transfer offers, he does not decide wage amounts, that is above his head.

Kroenke does not have a clue about football, but the people in charge were doing a bad job in terms of footballing success, you don't need to be expert to understand that, he knew that, but yet he made no changes, because, for the umpteenth, he did not give a damn about it!!! why is this not sinking in, that's why he's the biggest problem - because he doesn't care about trophies, the trophies that matter. Wenger and Gazidis were given license to do what they wanted for far far far too long and Stan 7000 miles away did nothing to change that.

Wenger and Gazidis should have gone years earlier but because that decision was never made, you blame the person who didn't make the decision, it's poor leadership, poor ownership, he should have moved new people in earlier, and if they were not doing their job, you make changes again, same way Chelsea did with managers and they were continually successful.

Arsenal generate a bigger income than Tottenham and Leicester so are in a position to pay more wages, paying bigger wages doesn't mean you care about winning trophies, if it was denting his profits he wouldn't bother.

This isn't about how much money is being spent, it's about what Kroenke's intention is, which is to make money for himself and Arsenal were doing that under Wenger in part due to CL and consistently making top 4 - and that is why he kept him? why else do you think he kept him and Gazidis for so many years exactly? Literally any other big club in European football would have got rid of them years before hand, could you imagine Barca/Madrid/Juventus/PSG/United eve, keeping the manager for that long without any real challenge for a title let alone winning one.

The only single reason why recent changes have been made is quite simply because Arsenal started to slip out of the top 4 and losing CL football - then the final straw was fans stopped turning up at the Emirates, enough empty red seats for Kroenke to finally pull the trigger.

Kroneke also NEVER comes to the Emirates, nearly never gives interviews, but you think he cares and given his track record, cares about winning trophies even when he's done everything he can to show that he doesn't by not making obvious changes when needed just like EVERY single other top club in Europe would have done, by not him.

Listen I am not saying Kroenke is an ideal owner, just that he's not the main cause of the mess we are in. Most avid fans don't have a clue about the FFP implications of deals so why would he? He didn't keep it as it was because of money, we have consistently been in the top 4 of wage bills for his entire tenure until this year when we are 5th. He has put up what the club can afford to spend and told the fans that there is money to spend and Wenger refused to spend it for the reasons given below, saying his squad is good enough. If he was in it for the money he would have reduced the wage bill years ago and not given Wenger money to spend or taken money out of the club like the Glazers. He kept the money Wenger wasn't spending within the club as reserves of cash. He took out about £3m at one point I think. Wenger resumed big spending after 2011 when Kroenke took control. We were a negative net spend club before that and he didn't sign many big names for big fees between the stadium move and Kroenke taking over.

Wenger had a famed wage structure for years that he refused to break and he repeatedly gave out about fees saying there was no value in the market, so to say he had no input on wages or fees is nonsense. Wenger was a lot more than a football manager at Arsenal, he was instrumental in the stadium move and was more like a director than a mere manager from that point on. Kroenke was the one who changed that structure. Wenger had too much control before that.

Arsenal have never been a club that fires managers unless it's a last resort. And Wenger was the last manager any Arsenal owner would have fired in a hurry, most of the fans didn't want him gone until he actually went. I wanted him gone years ago too but the club is different and has standards that it doesn't break and Kroenke has only adhered to them. If you think that paying £250m a year in wages isn't denting his profits then I don't know where to start and there is no point in continuing this.

The FFP implications of what Wenger left behind him could not have been known to Kroenke when the two mugs who put the whole mess in place didn't seem to know about it either.

You're really over complicating a very simple point.

He should have fired Wenger and Gazidis years beforehand because they were doing a great job, this is the football industry, at top European clubs that's what happens, if there's no success on the pitch you move the men charge on, and you replace adequetely, he never did that because the books were balanced, I haven't questioned how much money is spent, the clubs has made profits that's made happy however, and that's why he maintained the status quo. He spent money to make money which top 4 gave him, that was enough for him, that's the fundamental point. If he did not care about making money then why do Arsenal fans pay more money than anyone else?

He did not care about winning trophies, not only did he actually say this, but he proved it by not sacking Wenger and Gazidis years before they went. I don't know why you are defending him.

Stan Kroenke has warned Arsenal fans that he doubts they will be able to compete with rival clubs such as Chelsea and Manchester City in terms of expenditure, claiming: “If you want to win Championships then you would never get involved.”

Kroenke has earned opprobrium from Arsenal fans for the way in which the club has been run. The Gunners have cash of nearly £160million which could be available to invest in players, however last summer passed with Arsene Wenger spending only £10m on Chelsea’s Petr Cech.

In the same window Manchester City spent nearly £150m on the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Raheem Sterling and Nicolas Otamendi, whilst Chelsea invested £62m in eight players.

HAVE YOUR SAY Poll of the Day: Is it time for Arsene Wenger to leave Arsenal?
These two sides have won six Premier League titles since Arsenal last led the top flight in 2004 but Kroenke warned he would not support mass spending to get his side back up the table.

Speaking at the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference in Boston he said: “For me, being an individual owner, I have to have some sort of reality involved.

“If you want to win championships then you would never get involved. I think the best owners in sports are the guys that sort of watch both sides a bit. If you don't have a good business then you can't really afford to go out and get the best players unless you just want to rely on other sources of income.

By contrast Kroenke noted that fans in the Premier League were willing to travel similar, if not greater distances to watch their team. The 68-year-old noted that such remarkable displays of customer loyalty ensured that plenty of revenue could be generated, with Arsenal already charging the most in Europe for their premium season tickets.

“What did I learn specifically [from England]? You learn very quickly what that brand means,” said Kroenke.

“We have a gentleman who comes to Arsenal games, he flies his helicopter from South Africa, Cape Town to London quite often. It’s just an example of what a brand can mean, and what we can do in sports.

“We’re all working on that and that’s the big opportunity. Michael Jordan showed it - you can get paid a whole lot more if you can extend your brand. Manchester United showed it. They established benchmarks that people had thought heretofore unattainable, but their brand extension made people want to pay for it.”

Kroenke drew the ire of Arsenal fans last year when club chairman Sir Chips Keswick was forced to defend a £3m payment made to the owner for “strategic and advisory services”.

I don't know why you are defending this guy, he was always the root of the problem.

Arsenal fans are getting like United's with the Glazers.

"All we need to do is force the owner out.....

Well it isn't happening. Rich Americans do not buy sports teams with a view to making a profit by selling up a few years later. They buy them for keeps and to pass down the generations. In 2050 Man United will be owned by The Glazer Family and Arsenal will be owned by The Kroenke Family.

Wenger and Emery and the various other people appointed to whatever roles have had as much or more money available as several other clubs that have built far better teams.

You can ultimately blame the Kroenkes for appointing or sticking with these people but all we can do is hope they make better appointments going forward, because new ownership is a pipedream.
