Jamie Carragher has been suspended by Sky after he was filmed spitting at a football fan's car after being heckled.

Speaking to Sky News, the ex-Liverpool defender called it "a moment of madness".

Video: Carragher spits at fans after being heckled

Carragher, who said he personally called the family on Sunday, said his "biggest regret was that a young girl was caught up in the incident".

When shown the mobile phone footage, which was shot following Liverpool's defeat to Manchester United on Saturday, he said it "felt like an out of body experience looking back on it".

Admitting "what I've done is disgusting", he said "if someone had done what I had done on the pitch I would vilify them".

He said he did not believe the incident "represented the real me", saying "I have brought shame on the name of football. I was a role model, people looked to me."

When he was asked what his children thought of his behaviour, Carragher became visibly upset, welling up with tears.

He went on to say, "hopefully I can get the chance to meet face to face with the family, and apologise to them again".

Carragher did his best to drag Thiery Henry down to his level and was quite successful.

There isn't a level low enough to drag Henry down to

Cannot believe that Jamie did not start questioning why the Father went to the papers, or that he was actually spitting at the Father and the girl had the audacity to 'get in the way' of his gob, or that he only spat and didn't punch, kick, head-butt or stab the guy ?

Or maybe he realises like the majority of sane people that he has acted like a complete an utter mug.

A person isn't defined by what goes in to their mouth. Defined and judge by what comes out of the mouth.

I don't think he truly regrets it. Only because he's been caught does he show some remorse. Awful

Agreed. He can't help it, he's only a footballer.

As said by Vinnie on talk sport he is `Filth, just filth - no I'm sorry Job Centre.'

He has plenty of previous. He has been accepted a police caution for `Road Rage' before!
He threw a coin into the crowd at Highbury.
He climbed up scaffolding to get at corporate hospitality people saying `calm, calm' to him at Luton way back.

Ive always liked him even though I support Everton but basically he's a scccumbag scally who has bluffed his way onto TV and was always going to lose his job by doing something ridiculous.

Yet another on the endless list of shame associated with Liverpool Football club.

He should have grown a pair of breasts and went drink driving. What was he thinking, spitting is far far worse than being a danger to the public while pi55ed at the wheel. He could have killed someone if they slipped on his spit.

Captain interesting post. I don't follow personal sports news so I didn't know of any previous. But looking at this case I had thought that this is most unlikely to have come out of the blue. It's just so extreme. I don't think the guy even swore at him.

He can't say he was goaded, he never had to wind his window down and it wasn't a lengthy period of abuse he had to suffer, he was immediately agro, that's the astonishing thing about it.

The bloke was just shouting out the score and laughing....big deal!!

What company would want a person like that representing them?

Its his "Big Ron" moment, wave bye bye to that media career Jamie lad.

It doesn't matter what was said or heard. What matters is a Sky Sport pundit has been caught on camera spitting at other motorists.

One website is reporting that after the Masuaku spitting incident at Wigan, Carragher said on Sky Sports, "It's vile, it's disgusting and it's an absolute disgrace."

The Daily Mirror reported after his 2008 road rage incident, "After the motorist and witnesses told police, Jamie and his lawyer went to a station the following day and he agreed to be cautioned for common assault. It is the lowest grade of the offence and covers anything from spitting to shoving. But accepting a caution is a legal admission of guilt."

Sky are going to sack him and he's got no-one to blame except himself.

I'd have no problem with sky sacking him, what he did even allowing for it being a moment of madness is disgusting and scummy, however will sky sack him? Surely they are going to show some consistency, considering the woman reporting about the story at 5pm was caught bladdered behind the wheel going to collect her kids from school was not sacked he probably would hope to be disciplined as lightly as she was.
