omfg
here we go again wiv ingerlund
forum regulars plat and tso have been around the block and know the game
I remember england won every game in quali for euro 88 and were favourites i believe
they beat a quality yugoslavia team 4-1 in belgrade if memory serves
then..
lost all 3 in the tournament
The point of international football is that it is a hundred miles away from our dearly beloved epl
The epl is played at a breakneck pace in the middle of winter
tournament international football is played in the height of summer on continental europe or some other flesh burning hell on earth
You simply can not play kick and rush for 90 mins in such conditions
you have to play keep ball
england midfielders who can keep possession are numbered on one hand
off the top of my head i can think of Carrick, Huddlestone, leon osman and leon britton
only one of them is in the current squad
you can have all the harry kane, rooneys, sterlings and sturridges you want but if england can not keep possession they may as well not be on the field
Hodgson has spent zero time building a team for next summer
when sir ALf won in 66, he had the team he wanted the autumn before when they beat spain
thats planning
Hodgson picked his best team to beat Lithuania at Wembley 4=0 well done
he is going to pluck an xi out of his backside to play italy on tuesday, a game which he should use for a template for france
i weep for the state of english football

It has been, and always will be the same when a team beats poor opposition, and a player scores against them, and is "bigged" up as brilliant.
If you are a follower of racing you will know that winning your low grade prep races isn't the same as winning group races,as that is where the real test comes.
Yes,Kane is good, and I couldn't understand why he wasn't sarting for Spurs at the beginning of the season, but he was easily cancelled out against a top side.
So far they haven't played against a half decent team, and people are getting carried away. There is some good potential in the team, but also some weaknesses, time will tell.
Agree about keeping the ball, and that has always been where we blow it,trying to play too fast, and thereby losing control.

I don't think any intelligent fan is getting carried away by Lithuania. Mostly just the OP taking a harmless Rooney quote and trying to stir. But the OP strikes me as being a huge mug, so no surprise there.

Germany aside, was there anything better than England at the World Cup? Argentina pretty much played for 0-0 in all their big games, Holland the same. Brazil lost 7-1 at home, Colombia went out to that team. Only difference appeared to be all those sides were well organised, whereas our team ran around like headless chickens. That's the managers fault, not the players at his disposal

The answer to that is International football has been going down the drain for some time. The big tournaments come at the end of a long hard season for some, and instead of taking a break and going away ,they have to start allover again with top tournaments, resulting in many poor performances from the World's stars. Not many games are exciting to watch, and it can't be coincidence that so many countries are massively under performing.

someone said the other day that england are a quarter final team
they should be aiming for semis at the very least

Uefa Champions League semi-final 2013/14 Real Madrid vs Bayern Munich possession stats Real 36% Bayern 64%(source UEFA). Final aggregate score Real 5 vs Bayern 0
EPL April 27 2014 Liverpool vs Chelsea possession stats Liverpool 73% Chelsea 27%(source BBC).  Final score Liverpool 0 vs Chelsea 2

No reason to believe having possession is the be all and end all. Don't see any truly outstanding international team. A reasonable tactician can fashion an England side that makes the most of our speed and goal threat upfront. Don't think we are that far away.

Previous posters correct, has been the same for nearly 2 generations - get completely outplayed in midfield, and sometimes by mid-ranking teams.

England should be in the top 3/4 of Europe, their problem will be when they play against a team that keeps possession well like Chile did at Wembley, they reduced England to running around like "headless chickens" they didn,t give England any of the ball,England have a lot of fine young athletic/strong/pacey players and should be better this time round but stepping up from the mediocrity that is the EPL is a big ask,how much "progress"has there been in Europe?.

i am of the opinion that parking the bus, playing counter attack football is a worthwhile tactic, like you
however
how often do real madrid or chelsea do this?
once a season, twice?
in a season of 50 odd games
It is an exhausting policy, requiring physical and mental discipline for 90mins
you run a whole lot more without the ball than with it
I don't think you can win an international tournament in summer conditions with it
doing it in the quarters, semis and final in the space of a week
its a non runner for me

Don't think, like you, we have the defensive discipline, organisation or strength to continually park the bus but i do believe we can mould this bunch into a truly dangerous counter attacking side. I may be wrong but i have never seen Real park the bus. I've seen them play counter attack when playing teams of equal strength like Barca or Bayern but never ultra defensive or negative tactics.

well
i think the 1-0 first leg over Bayern was pretty much parking the bus
they certainly did it every time they played barca under mourinho
but then that was once or twice a season
i dont know about a truly dangerous counter attacking side
think this only works with truly world class players being supported by superfast superfit midfield runners
youve got real last year with bale, cr7, benzema, di maria running on
the roonaldo man u team with parky breaking like a whippet
brazil won a couple of world cups with romario and the original ronaldo with that kind of approach
Think you would have to be wildly optimistic to put kane, sturridge and sterling in that bracket

Club football played at the highest level is of a better standard than international football imo.  The one truly outstanding international side i have seen in recent years is Spain and they are in transition/decline.
The original Ronaldo, in 2006, played alongside Adriano, Ronaldinho and Kaka in probably the last decent Brazilian team.  Nobody(at least not me) is saying that England are in that class or that England will win the world cup.
What i am saying is that in view of the current standard of international football there is no reason England should have an inferior complex.
I agree Real did park the bus under Mourinho but that's why he got the sack Grin

I admit, I do let me patriotism cloud my judgement somewhat, but name a team that was so much better, overall?

Brazil Lost 7-1. Argentina blagged their way through by playing for 0-0, Holland the same. Colombia and Chile were thrilling in the group stage, but both submitted to a poor Brazil team in the moment of truth. I'm not saying England were good, but it isn't as if every other side are so intimidating.

Hodgson should of been fired though. Failing in a group with Costa Rice and two p*ss poor Italian and Uruguay teams was unforgivable. We should of went after someone like Sabella, imo. Showed he could get an average side to a final, which is likely more than Roy will ever do. Also showed he can manage a side with a star player that never performs in tournaments (Messi/Rooney)

you are rightJC
there wasnt an awful lot of quality about some of teams in the world cup
but there is a difference between being astute and tactically aware like the dutch and the argentinians
and hopelessly optimistic and naive like the english.
the dutch and arg came with settled sides and a game plan
england came with the same old "play the high tempo epl game and we will surely win"
which is impossible in the amazon jungle

England players lack skill on the ball. That's why I find Harry Kane so refreshing he actually shows talent on the ball.

England are set to qualify out of probably the worst (ie easiest) qualifying group ever. Switzerland, Slovenia, Lithuania, Estonia and San Marino and now you are saying you will get to the semi finals or even win it!

Germany, Spain, France and Belgium way ahead of you. Italy always beat you in tournaments.

Defence is poor with Cahill a liability at the highest level, as in the last World Cup. I like Hart in goal but even he came up short in the World Cup.

Up front Rooney freezes on the big stage or is unfit or is tired at the end of the season. I like Sturridge but injury prone. Kane completely unproven. Who's left?

rooney said england are frightening but then rooney is english and if you were english you would be frightened to have that team representing you against the top sides in europe.
