yes is the smart move
the way i see it is this... scotland have huge amounts of revenue that is shared between 60 milion people. if you cut out 55 million then the remaining 5 million will become seriously wealthy. it's not rocket science. scotland could pile up a huge fortune by the time the oil runs out. put it this way scotland will be filthy rich for the next 100 years if they vote yes as the americans say... it's no brainer it's not even a debate. there's nothing to think about. of course scotland will vote yes and they'll vote yes out of self-interest |

I live in a very different country ...but from my window i can see the NO posters vie by Binocs
|

By:
we won't vote YES out of economic self-interest but of a belief that opportunities and challenges in Scotland are best addressed by the people who live there and not by a toing and froing between the two major Westminster parties, each of which has presided (sometimes for extended periods with vast majorities) over a constant erosion of living standards and quality of living

I can't be bothered to read the whole thread, but how will Scotland become wealthier under independence? and don't say oil, because that simply is not true
|
|
By:
I'm an ideological yes voter but this debate is being conducted just how Salmond wants it. The yes campaign do have some serious economic questions to answer and can't do so to the extent that it really has degenerated to the point where fools like this highlander nutter assert that it is our pound and we are going to use it.
![]() Sit down quietly and read highlander: Nobody has said you can't use sterling. What they have said is that you won't be part of a currency union. Therefore Scotland won't have a central bank and will therefore be using a foreign currency with no say in what happens with that currency. Welcome to independence and you complain about lack of reasonable debate? |
|
By:
what will be the currency of new scotland?
will the BBC seize to exist? What will be GBR called? will uk be UKWS ( UNITED kingdom without SCOTLAND) will their be riots after the results been declared? Will the scotts allowed to bet on BF? |

The only honourable thing for Scotland to do is to create it's own central bank and have it's own currency.
Or what is the point of independence? |
|
By:
The other issue which should have been addressed is on what basis are Scots voting for independence? As it stands the Scots are being asked to vote for independence on any terms because Salmond wants to be King and will sell the nation down the river to get it.

we should also send all "in comers" who do not want us to be free back to engerlund. |

you ppl are so naive, the vast majority of ppl vote out of self-interest. scotland will vote for independence because there will be huge financial gain for them if they do so.
fast forward to an independent scotland in say 10 years. scotland has become the richest nation in the world based on gdp per capita. they have the best free healthcare system in the world. the best education system in the world. zero unemployment. growth is at unprecedented levels creating millionaires by the truckload on a weekly basis. international corporations falling over themselves to relocate to scotland because of enormous tax breaks which england and the rest cant afford. anyone who votes no to that must by definition be stupid if scotland votes yes to independence it will be like every single citizen winning the jackpot in the euro lottery |
|
By:
Last year Scotland provided £800 more in tax per person that the UK average. This means Scotland would have been £8.3 billion better off as an independent country over the past 5 years. We could have spent that money investing in our economy with the same debt levels as the rest of the UK or saved it and had £8.3 billion less debt.

why does Norway have high tax ,high cost of living and a big debt then ?

The oil in the North Sea is worth over £1 trillion. There are at least 15-24 billion barrels of oil remaining which will continue long into the 21st century. Over 90% of the tax revenue will go to an independent Scotland which can help to establish a national oil fund for future investment. Recently, Business for Scotland explained the potential for a West coast oil boom that is currently blocked by Westminster.
|
|
By:
but norway is the new utopian dream after the celtic tiger bit the dust ...its plan b
if oil is key why the high tax and high cost of living in norway ? so scotland can do it better than norway without the biggest investment fund on the planet ....i think not business scotland ....wonder where they get there funding from just the yes campaign under another name |
|
By:
this debate can be made very easy
independence for scotland = scot ppl rich beyond their wildest dreams staying with the uk = same old drudgery. england taking all your money and spending it on their surrey mansions, country estates, yachts etc ![]() |
