wallis, you don't seem to want to criticise woy in any shape or form. You don't think he was tactless even?
hes alleged to have said "no offence" after the monkey reference, so he probably knows he's effed up and is intelligent enough to know that saying something like that can be taken as offensive. I can understand his frustration that this has been leaked but ultimately its his fault. It came from his mouth and anything else is just blaming the messenger. theres been dressing room leaks before. I hope he's learned his lesson and leaves his chubby brown/bernard manning joke book at home in future. |

"andros townsend @andros_townsend 8h
I don't know what all this fuss is about. No offence was meant and none was taken! It's not even news worthy!" well what did u expect him to say?? "I'm seething with my manager right now"?!! and if some idiots do direct monkey chants at Townsend now, their manager has given them an excuse. |

Freddie, such apologist drivel is the reason why the PC brigade run riot. Roy is a lot of things but is certainly no racist and trying to twist his words to suit an agenda epitomises all that is wrong with 'kick it out.'
All it does is invent a solution to a problem that doesn't exist. As a multicultural society most people treat each other as human beings and this is not subject to skin tone. But we are continually force fed the myth that racism is prevelant in English football. It isn't, we are not in Poland or the Ukraine. |

charwell, would u tell the same joke around black people?
doubt it. |
By:
I totally agree Charwell. This countries record compared to Europe as far as racism goes is exceptional. Why people feel a constant need to keep fueling a fire is beyond me. It does nothing but create problems that were not there.
Im dropping out of this as Freddie clearly has issues with Hodgson or at some point will claim he is fishing to save his embarrassment. The correct approach should be to get the person who leaked the story in front of a camera and ask them : 1. What exactly did you find so offensive and can you explain your position on racism ? 2. Considering you were so outraged you leaked it to a newspaper did you get paid for it ? |
By:
Wallis is clearly employed as Woy's PR man. who's embarrassed? Its woy hodgson who is mate. With his 1970's humour

First of all, it's an old joke about the monkey being more intelligent than the human so the monkey does all the technical work and the human is only there to feed the monkey. Seems Roy felt that Townsend was doing all the work and was telling the other players to feed him (give him the ball) charwell, would u tell the same joke around black people? you could quite easily tell that joke around black people as it contains absolutely nothing whatever that black people might find offensive. Of course if you were a racist and thought of black people as monkeys then you probably wouldn't tell that joke around them. That joke is only offensive to racists so let's see how many on this forum are offended by it. |
By:
yeah, good luck using that in an office environment or even your local sports team after delivering the punchline in reference to a black colleague
before u get a chance to explain yourself u might be picking up yer teeth |
By:
would u tell the same joke around black people?
doubt it. Indefatigably yes - have you ever met any black people Freddy, you know properly met, talked to, get to know, not just talk about Bob Marley when you've had a few? You'll find most of them are quite human donchano, sense of humour, ability to spot bullocks 'news' stories , that sort of ting.............. |
By:
Monkey has become and has long been synonymous with racism it's noises are mimicked it's food has been thrown onto pitches it's mannerisms also mimicked
The mere fact that a story with no racial connotation when made can now be turned into a racist remark is indicative of where we currently sit as a society |

I have never read or heard of such bollox in my life what a load of crap--i have played football rugby boxed socialised and been locked up with blokes all my life -who if you called them JOCK-TAFFY-PADDY-YANK-BUBBLE-SWEATY-KAISER-ANDi dare not say on here the blacks--AND NOT ONE OF THEMwould take offence or see it as racist--what has this country come to absolute playground stuff-
By:
The absolute lack of intent by Hodgeson seems clear, but I don't see any harm in him making an apology for his innocent mistake in case anybody misconstrued it.
Anyone who thinks it needs further investigation is a moron though imo. |
By:
Java---spot on--its embarrasing
By:
im pleased the black lawyers raised a complaint and more so that the vast majority agree
that their complaint is without foundation no point brushing this stuff under the carpet or being afraid to mention it |
By:
Would love it if Townsend came out on twitter and told Herbert to shut the f*ck up. The bloke appears to be doing more harm than good.
By:
The Irish and Scots should not be commentating on this affair...
Stop trying to undermine the England team, that is your only concern! |
By:
Would love it if Townsend came out on twitter and told Herbert to shut the f*ck up.
not going to make any difference glen johnson came out in support of suarez re "negrito". what the fa wants to happen will happen.....not transparent i know but thats the fa for you |
By:
I must admit to being a bit surprised how plenty aren't getting it, he wasn't referring to the monkey singularly, he was referring to the monkeys performance in being the most important part of the mission and directly comparing that situation with townsend in that he was the most effective component in the match scenario...by doing this he was directly bracketing the two....is he a racist, no of course not, but he has been undeniably naive and stupid to trip over this in this day and age.
By:
I would Freddie and my black friend at work would have absolutely no second thought that I had a racist intention. You see we go for the odd drink after work, chat about the football and so forth. Why would an anecdote about a monkey be anything other than an anecdote about a monkey?
You may be well meaning and genuine but you are very, very misguided. |
By:
because he was comparing townsends role as the same role as the monkeys ...that's why.
By:
Naievity that i find endearing in this day and age.........such innocence is a pleasant rarity.
By:
correct Duffy. some lads like Charwell are acting like whats all the fuss about?!
which is ridiculous given how often black footballers have been on the receiving odd of racist monkey chants and here we have the England manager introducing a monkey reference into the dressing room in relation to a Black player. FFS! Woy must be feeling rather mortified right about now. |
By:
shouldnt be using anything with monkey where a black person is involved...even the example hodgeson used.
no excuse imo hodgeson must have known about the wacial angle...he has been around long enough. if you have a point to make just come out with it properly. |
By:
Looking through the squad i'm starting to think it was Defoe.
The journo in question (Gordon Smart) has said it was a player that went directly to him after the game and was offended by it. Smart used to edit the celebrity gossip page of the Sun and would no doubt know Defoe who's often moving in celebrity circles due to his various ex's. So if there was a market for this, my money would be on him. If you're offended by a comment, you should have the b*llocks to go and speak to the person that's offended you. Even more so when they are your boss. Running off and bitching about it is embarrassing. I hope we find out who it is and they get plenty of stick for it. The squad doesn't need players like that. |
By:
read the joke itself and it will become clearer, it's quite well known...in this scenario, townsend was playing the part of the monkey referenced by hodgson...the fact that hodgson said straight afterwards, no offence, displays that he was well aware that he's gaffed.!
By:
Racist chants at matches-throwing banana skins etc NO place for it in football 100 per cent---but this is pathetic obviously just a throw away remark ---forget it now or it will just cause deeper trouble imo
By:
Thats not aknowledgement of a gaffe only a suggestion that Townsend should not infer anything incorrectly.
By:
My money would be on defoe as well, fwiw.

A nice and charming post from pekerdunne..certainly goes beyond the obvious
need of most people to feel superiour and jump to condemn. |

some lads like Charwell are acting like whats all the fuss about?! Some lads like...........Andros Townsend too. Move on. |
By:
if it is defoe fair play.
i wouldnt have gone directly to roy. once that gets back tot he fa they would have made sure he never played again. |
By:
So you don't think players talk?
I'd say there's a very good chance the senior players, Hodgson and his back room staff know exactly who it was by now. |

Nothing more PC than a white man being offended on behalf of a black man, even when the black man doesn't take offence.
Interviewer: How are we going to get rid of racism? Morgan Freeman: Stop talking about it! I'm going to stop calling you a white man. And I'm going to ask you to stop calling me a black man. I know you as Mike Wallis, you know me as Morgan Freeman…. |
By:
That's one of the most sensible things I've ever seen you post charwell.
Welcome back. |

the sniveling grass is the real issue here, not some harmless joke that has people like freddiek on their soap box with fake outrage.
