Zidane never even nearly dominated the World Cup in 1998, he had a solid team around him got him to the final. Messi and Ronaldo not had that luxury. |

Zidane was imperious at every World Cup he played at. Messi and Ronaldo have been anonymous. Oh, sorry, Ronaldo has scored against Iran and North Korea.

Zidane was poor in 1998 up until the final. He was injured in 2002 and had a good 2006 but fked that up for himself.

Retired players tend to get inflated because people think players and games in days gone by where better than the present. It won't be long before somebody says they seen Zidane turn water in to wine and cure the sick.
Ask someone who is 30+ who the best player in the world was and you'll probably get 'Maradona'. Less than 20 and it'd be Messi. Over 40 and it's probably Pele or Best. People like to say older players were better because it makes younger generations jealous they never got to see those guys play. It's *almost* a science - try it... ask a few people of varying ages who's the greatest footballer they've ever seen... |

This is nonsense, Messi is part of an excellent Argentina team, they are choc full of top class players in every position. The only nation with more in depth talent is Spain. In fact I would put Spain at number one and Argentina at number two in the world, on paper.
Ronaldo's Portugal have some decent players but admittedly they are quite a bit below Argentina man for man. Zidane was part of very defensively minded French team, they were all about that incredible defence, you just couldn't score against them. They relied on Zidane to create everything, all the pressure was on him and he rarely disappointed. Unfortunately, Ronaldo and Messi often disappoint, especially when the pressure is on. |

You're serious? Come on look at these names... like I said choc full of top class players
Higuain, Tevez, Messi, Aguero, Mascherano, Di Maria, Heinze, Veron, Demichelis, Burdisso, Milito, Samuel, Gago, Zabaleta, Lavezzi If you cant perform with this kind of quality all over the pitch, then you have questions to answer. Messi has no excuses, there are plenty of top players in Argentina and plenty more young players coming through. |

Name your strongest starting eleven for Argentina then highlander.
Of the players you named - six are strikers when only one will play with Messi in big games. The likes of Demichelis, Burdisso, Gago, Zabaleta, Heinze, Veron are nowhere near world class. |

I'm mid forties and everybody I knew back in the 80's quickly realised Maradona was the greatest there'd ever been. There was very little argument about that. A lot of people hated him intensely, but still had to admit he was a football genius. Today, Messi by a mile the best in the world. Best ever? No, not yet. |

JamDav I strongly disagree with your assessment and I think you are deliberately being awkward. I have more than proved my point, the names on the list speak for themselves. At this moment and in recent years, Argentina have one the best international squads in the world. In my opinion they are second only to Spain.
And to get back to my main point, Messi is supported by top class players in all areas when he plays for his country - and I'm sure he would be first to acknowledge that. He can have no excuses for poor performances at all. If he played for England you would have a point, but Argentina are an extremely talented team. |

Highlander again you avoid naming the Argentina team that has a world class midfield, defence and goal keeper. As it doesnt exist.
Of the players you name six are strikers, no doubt Argentina has world class strikers. Of the other players you name - Heinze, Veron, Samuel are well past their best and are rightfullu nowhere near the national team. The likes of Gago and Burdisso are average and would get nowhere near the other top international sides. No doubt Argentina have up there with the best front three/four players in intl football but their midfield, defence and goal keepers are far from 'world class'. |

both jamdav & highlander have got a point, though jamdav more so. Yes, Argentina have got the attacking talent of wet dreams but they're only going to play 4 of them maximum per game which leaves another 7 positions to be filled.
Look at how England are comparatively blessed in the right back position with Johnson, Walker, Richards, Jones & Hibbert but are pretty weak elsewhere. Playing Richards ahead of Milner isn't going to work. Look at the rest of the Argentina team - the keeper's weak, as is the defence and while Mascherano is a solid holder, his partner's generally Gago who failed to make the grade at Madrid and was okish at Roma last year. Look at their performance at the last World Cup for confirmation. |
