The fact that Spain didn't even select Messi for the tournament speaks volumes

Highest level my arse. Before tonight, he'd scored five goals in major tournaments. The first two were his first two international goals with home advantage, two others were against Iran and North Korea. Ronaldo has yet to prove himself at the highest level.

yes... he has never lived up to his reputation for Portugal
before tonight
But he has played a lot better for Real this season
so maybe his best to come at international levelConfused

Messi disappointed slightly at last WC
but still in front of Ronaldo for me

Actually given the argies ridiculous claim to the falklands is via spain and from before Argentina even bl00dy EXISTED, surely reciprocally Spain have a claim on Messi? :) Spain should demand him in their squad, against Argentinas colonialism of tricky low centre of gravity footballers!

In terms of goals and assists the best tournament either of them have had was Messi's Copa America in 2007.

In the two world cups Messi has played he became Argentina's youngest ever goal scorer at World Cups in the first and in the second he was shorlisted for player of the tournament.

Hardly the case that he always goes missing.

Neither of them are fit to lace the likes of Maradona, Pele, Zidane's boots.

Messi easily better than Zidane and Ronaldo arguably is now better as well.

Ronaldo is the best player on the pitch apart from when Messi is there. That said, Ronaldo is improving year by year... he's always been a very big character and stands out from the rest. These days he can actually deliver the goods though and doesn't go missing when things aren't going his way.

In terms of work rate, i think Ronaldo has worked harder than Messi - his fitness, strength and pace have all improved over the years. I feel it's all effortless for Messi... he could step out on to a pitch having had a chinese & mars bars the night before followed by a few pints and he'd still just provide that 'magic' through pass or flick to earn himself a yard of space. It's natural, which is why Messi is regarded as the best.
