Nile Ranger: Ex-Newcastle United footballer on rape charge

Former Newcastle United striker Nile Ranger has been charged with rape.

The 22-year-old will appear in court on 21 August in connection with an alleged incident at a hotel in the Jesmond area of the city in January.

Mr Ranger, of Bailey Close, Harringay, London, left the club by mutual consent in March.

The player, a former England under-19 international, who has had spells on loan at Sheffield Wednesday and Barnsley, is currently on bail.

He made more than 50 appearances for Newcastle following his debut in August 2009, with the majority coming as a substitute.

Newcastle United may be in need of forward reinforcements, but a club even more desperately seeking strikers are Swindon Town, who confirmed on Friday that they'd completed the signing of ex-Magpie Nile Ranger.

The 22 year-old Londoner briefly appeared on trial for Swindon in 2008 following his release by Southampton, only for United to nip in and secure his services.

He's agreed a one year deal at the County Ground, with the option for a further 12 months. Confirming the news, his new club also commented that they

"....are aware of the ongoing legal situation concerning Nile and the terms negotiated and agreed by both parties are conditional upon Nile being acquitted of the charges he is currently facing (that's rape).

A free agent since finally exiting from Newcastle back in March, Ranger last kicked a ball competitively a month earlier in a Newcastle reserve game.

Ranger debuted as a 72nd minute substitute for Swindon in Saturday's League One visit to Shrewsbury Town but couldnt help his side avoid a 0-2 defeat.
