KArun Nair is a decnt player and deserves his chance but sadly I think there are better in India.
I would give Druv Jurel a go because he has great technique and can keep for an innings or session to give Pant a rest. The alternative I have is the 14 yo kid who has been flaying the England U19's and move KL down to 3 to solidify things. India have a similar problem to England at number 3 but at least have many great options. |

Plenty of pictures about with Pant batting in the nets and looks ok.

By:
As someone who watches every ball of the IPL WD the Vaibhav Suryavanshi ton for Rajasthan Royals still fresh in the memory , hit the first delivery on debut for 6 , a spellbinding watch and not easily forgotten.

I saw it.
The boy can play. He is not a wild slasher but at the moment is thrashing everything which is not cricket. I have no doubt he can make runs at Text level even now though over time will need to temper his arrogance |
By:
I should cash out and walk away here but cannot
By:
I think Pant will tear this kid Bashir apart today without any contrary thoughts to cloud his judgement
By:
Honours still even for me
If India can bat all day they will lead. If they do not both sides will have to defend against losing the match. I need to make a decision whether to walk away or not. Maybe wait until tomorrow |
By:
Needs some thought WD for sure , important equation for me is the run rate and the fact we've averaged 266 runs a day so far with 2 full days play albeit one with slow over rate , if there's no collapse foreseeable then i can't see the overall 4 per over getting smashed unless one team can reach the two way result stage which means to me it's still very much a three way result and i still wouldn't be laying the draw as i've already ruled out any possibility of a borderline declaration due to the series status.
Good luck with your decision , any sports follower thinking cricket isn't interesting is clearly missing something. ![]() |

Thanks Hayden,
My view is the ball is 40 overs old, the pitch is ok though slow. Two batsmen at the crease with good technique so there is no rush to decision. India should get close to parity be tea. If India get to parity the pressure moves on to England and moving day is day 4 not day 3. Archer is a game changer but the ball is older until just before tea. So there we have it. Same as yesterday. I do not have a clue so will wait until tea and see |

England favourites at the moment and deservedly so, especially if they break this partnership early. I still think there will be a positive result rather than a draw given we have 3 days to go.
Over rates are a real issue, it's a disgrace that only 72 overs were bowled today. The authorities must come up with some kind of rule change or penalties to encourage teams to speed up, the spectators are being short changed. The BBC website reporting is a disgrace - there are seven articles or videos headlined on there for todays play and Archer's name appears in SIX of them ! He took one wicket ffs. You could be forgiven for believing there were no other players out there. |
By:
I don’t see England as favourites Dixie but they are less vulnerable as they have runs on the board. If they get an early wicket…or two then they are in the box seat.
I see it pretty close with the edge on England with runs on the board. It is going to be blistering today. The pitch “ ought “ to be well behaved if a little slow. I take your point about Archer but the public have a soft spot for him. He was treated abominably by England and Root. They effectively destroyed his best years. It was akin to stripping Ali of his Title. Archer looked to have Jaiswal in real difficulty and out in 3 balls. He is tough as teak and has incredible stamina but I noticed the speed on his second spell was down yesterday. Maybe because it was the Nursery End but I will be watching closely today. If India see off his first spell they could go on to take a lead. I should be clearing my England red but cannot. I will wait but it looks like a dumb all or nothing play for me |

Morning all, welcome back to leafy north London. It's time to roll up your shirt sleeves and get ready for a tug-of-war. Never mind pace and bounce, we're looking at attrition and nutrition - because a proper battle, in conditions that won't quite budge, is nourishing for the soul.

A very soporific start to proceedings
By:
It's Test cricket love.
Get yourself in. The game lasts for 5 days. As a tourist it is the chance you may only get ever four years to be on the Honours Board at Lords. It is hot. The pitch is benign. You do not want to get out. You do not want to be in the field and you do not want to bat last or be chasing a big total if you are. |
By:
Soporific indeed but gripping nonetheless. The game is on a knife edge at the current moment of time, not even half way into the test
By:
I took a cheeky punt on India at 3.15 and 3.2
Pretty dumb really as a wicket would make it hard to get back but the market is going to make some corrections to its position. Not neccer celery with regard to their view on the result but as cover in case. I am still gambling as I am not a banker. |
By:
Draw realisation sinking in. Unlikely to be a draw imho but will the pitch break or not? It looks good for batting or rather not for bowling today.
By:
Oh I'm all for it
Over 352.5 on India & backed the draw! Carse looked cooked in the last game & he looks it today Archer is bound to be rusty Woakes is woeful & Bashir to a playtoy for the Injuns |
By:
Yes I bottled 334.5 yesterday
Run line was something like 415 or 425 last night so good bet! 404.5 now |
By:
I think Carse looks fit and is a trier but lacks a little finesse, which, he should be learning from Broad and Anderson.
I do like England bowling options for the Ashes if all fit. I like the fact they may be able to rotate Archer and Wood. There is no substitute for raw pace. We should be sending young spinners to winter in India to learn their craft. I like young Bashir and Stokes faith in him. He is not the real deal yet and I believe India have decided to keep him in the team by not going after him. that might change today. I don't think there are any other spinners who would make much difference bowling first on slow flat wickets. The boy has the right temperament but needs to learn to be a better bowler. I also liked Haseeb Hameed who also has the right temperament and has improved and I think deserves another chance. |
By:
Not seen anything to change my thinking here , slow over rate by comparison , slow scoring rate and far more delays than necessary added to my theory of not losing the match at any cost if at all possible and the strive for a two way result from both teams.
Cue a batting collapse ![]() |
By:
Certainly no demons in the pitch yet!
I have equalised my green on draw and India as I don't know if I am Arthur or Martha England going out rather early as they are still in a decent position but as I said previous I think the market is now thinking what if |
By:
Run line was 350.5 this morning before I put the bet on
Watched the few few balls and pressed the trigger I use the runline on BF, not the innings runs |
By:
I think they need to extend the hours of play in Eng, NZ, SA & AUS because it's predominately seam in those countries
Should be an hour, not 30 minutes Plus the light isn't a factor in all those places in the summer |
By:
Very good 50 from Pant. Hopefully both get on the Honours Board
By:
Whichever side of the fence you're on gotta love him
![]() Have to think if any of these teams lose this test it'll be self inflicted as opposed to anything remotely to do with risk taking. |
By:
Suryavanshi out for 14 off 13 balls
![]() I would love to see them throw him into the Test side! |
By:
Absolutely love him from the very first time I saw him bat. I just knew.
He is great for cricket too. |
By:
I'd think there's a chance WD as it'd be fantastic box office but maybe only if either team are 3-1 up in series.
By:
No I don't think so. maybe back in India.
Interesting 20 minutes here. I don't understand why batsmen don't see this for what it is and duck and weave |
By:
here we go.
think India and Pant have been waiting for this moment. Thing is why take him down before lunch? Be patient |
By:
I think it was Atherton who commented, at the start today, that the pace of play (and the frequent ball-change requests) represent something of a dereliction of duty by the umpires/match officials.
Zero weather and when we finish morning on Day 3...we will have lost the equivalent of a full session already. I'm with Athers, we've crept way beyond acceptable and the incessant delays must be outlawed. |
By:
In general DRS & concussion tests have added 30 mins to every day
By:
Agree Apt , they've come a long way in bringing test cricket back to life over the last few years but this will only take it a step back.
Find this test match somewhat bizarre , it's been gripping from the start in my eyes despite the apparent lack of urgency we've seen in comparison to the first two tests. Think you're right WD a test debut in India would be a far smarter move. |
By:
As for the match, looks easy for this class pair facing the old ball.
If India get through 15 overs of a new one then it looks mighty tough for England's bowlers in this heat... |
By:
Market has felt about right (or, at least, I can't fathom where it might be out of line) so not taking as many entries as I generally would be.
By:
Nice position on the run line Jerry , looks a good call
By:
Always though that India should be favourites from before it started but it has taken 2 days and a session to get there. Hard to see England winning now but a draw is still a very strong possibility.
