Absolute masterclass in rope-a-doping here
Only the rain can save Albion and it ain't coming! God Bless America. |

India have refused a lot of singles, would have been a lot nearer had they played normal cricket. Bumrah has not looked in too much trouble and played 47 balls.

Thank you Athers.
"Can come back and bowl because it is an external injury" Sageform on the right wavelength too. |

Thanks JH.

Norah Batty couldn't reach that with her yard brush

Relatively speaking,England huge at 1.44
bearing in mind when Jadeja was 'dismissed' they hit 1.02 Bumrah's no mug with the bat but Siraj is a bunny so as soon as one of these is next out there are still too many runs to achieve the target slogging but the middle to lower order have shown this was readily attainable |

Will have to have a dart now.

Stokes has Captained well this Test. Got the toss right. His run out of Pant was pivotal in the game and he has bowled well, at the right times with the right deliveries. Think he has inspired Archer a bit too. He deserves the plaudits.
|
|
By:
Ben Stokes has a fourth innings bowling average of 6.83 over the last two years. The best of all seamers that have bowled a minimum of 100 deliveries in this period.

Monumental effort here from the Rockstar , concentration levels off the scale

England fortunate to get the one wicket in that session. Bumrah just couldn't help himself. Still hard to believe they can get these vitually in singles. Hardly any boundaries and only one two?
|
|
By:
New ball in 11 overs, that will be decisive
|
|
By:
It is the field setting given the state of the game, England stopping the boundary and offering singles India do not want to take.
30 wanted, 10 overs to the new ball, 1 wicket needed. What a finish in store. Do not leave your seats. |

What a bizarre way for the game to end. Well done England. It must have ben agonising to see the India score getting so close.

Despite no financial bias and not rooting for either team that was tension at its peak

I'm not sure either side deserved to win that ! Gripping it may be but the quality was often lacking, look at the number of dumb shots played to get out.
Got to feel for Jadeja, played really well, deserved better. A real rush of blood from Bumrah who had got his head down in unexpected fashion, he will be kicking himself. As for that last wicket, well how bizarre, kind of summed up proceedings. On to Old Trafford now, changes should be made but i doubt they will be now. Of course Zak scored that brilliant 189 two years ago there in The Ashes so no doubt that will be the managements excuse for keeping him in the side. |
|
By:
I remember WD saying how he thought Stokes was one of England's greatest captains and I completely disagreed, however hands up , he was brilliant during this test and is definitely moving up the captains table
|

By:
What a shame the game should end on a freak dismissal.

Hayden, i found my old autograph book earlier, alas no Richards of Greenidge signatures, but had Luckhurst, Cowdrey, Denness etc in there along with a few from a Somerset V Gloucester game i saw whilst on hols from the mid 70s including Brian Close who must have been mid 40s at the time.
, Trivia question - one of the Somerset autographs i got was Brian Langford who was a very good spinner who took nearly 1400 wickets in his career. I know you liked the John Player League, in 1969 Brian set a bowling record that will almost certainly never be beaten - any idea what it is ? |

Great post hunt , respect

|
By:
hunt l & c - i think you have to win the Ashes down under to qualify as a great captain. We shall see how things transpire this winter.
Stokes is certainly good but does make questionable decisions at times. Bravado can get the better of him. |
|
By:
That's rings a bell Dixie , i won't defeat the object and google but had to be something to do with not conceding many from what i remember of him especially as it was limited overs , a bowler with a brain from what i remember.
|
|
By:
Correct Hayden, it was to do with bowling economy. Quite unbelievably he bowled 8 overs, 8 maidens v Essex at Yeovil. So took 0-0.
It is the only time in List A cricket history that a bowler has bowled his full allocation of overs (8 in the JPL as you know) without conceding a run. |
|
By:
Crikey wouldn't have stretched the answer that far tbh , beggars belief in a test match never mind a 40 over competition.
Incredible achievement , do remember him though albeit pretty young when i traveled to all these games and mostly on my own , those were the days when your parents would let you do stuff like that and still fully expect to see you alive again. The Bill Frindall one was funny in hindsight , if i'd have known his now legendary status then as he hadn't been scoring long then i don't think i'd have probably asked him if he wanted his shoes cleaning ![]() |

Coulda,Woulda,Shouda-the old maxim..2-1 Eng but all know it should be 3-0 and not to Eng
In my book, this defeat is down to Jaiswal and Gill in particular in the 2nd inns Is it lack of concentration, entitlement, hubris? They are adept at contriving to snatch defeat from the proverbial jaws Don't tell me that's a bunch of happy bunnies in that camp There has to be a level of being let down by certain players if not dissension Proper game of attritional cricket in the latter stages and more gripping for it instead of the wham bam thank you mam b0llocks |

By:
DixieDean60; not 100% certain but I seem to remember Norman Gifford the Worcestershire captain bowling 0-0 in eight overs in a Sunday League game that was televised on BBC2.

The Bearded Wonder was indeed a TMS icon Hayden, Blowers speaks most highly and affectionately of him in his book. Listening to the broadcasts used to be like tuning in to your favourite uncles telling anecdotes and describing each delivery in between them. It's still good but its difficult to live up to those who went before.
I started going on my own or with a school friend to the cricket at The Mote when i was about 10, as you say we were trusted much more back then. We used to jump on a train to Maidstone in the morning and get back about 7 or 8 in the evening, parents would probably get done for child abuse now ! It's a real shame but that's society for you nowadays, i feel sorry for the kids. Johnny, agree with your general points re India. I think they were more distracted by the time wasting shenanigans than England were. A more level headed approach by their batsmen in the second innings would have seen them home. A psychological win for England on top of the match result. |
|
By:
Remember Norman Gifford quite well TCat but alas no memory of such a feat , one thing that does stick in my wind with Gifford was getting the great Imran Khan out for a duck in one of his few appearances for England , can't remember the competition though for the life of me , ODI probably.
|
|
By:
Tcat - Norman was indeed a very good spinner and miserly with it but i can find no reference to him emulating Brian Langford. Do you know who the opposition were or the approximate year ?
Hayden, Norman only played 2 ODI's and he was 44 when he did so ! It was a 4 nation event in Sharjah and he did indeed bowl Imran for a golden duck, well remembered. Ulverston's second most famous son, after Stan Laurel. |

Hi Dixie, think from your previous posts we are about the same age, when I first replied about the England captain debate and saying I didn't think you could be called a great captain until you won a ashes in Australia, saying Gatting and Strauss already had, but I was told that when Gatting won it was the worst Australian team ever!! Still I am with you that until you win the series over there you can't be considered "great".It is with great interest that I will be watching this winter, as although he has made many mistakes, and who doesn't, Ben Stokes is definitely a winner and he is going up in my estimation.
Ps thanks for the kind words Hayden |
