I lobe all this. I mean I am dead against it for the Spirit of Cricket and all that but it makes it far more exciting!
Now Rahul needs to take a single. The missed a trick with Archer from the wrong end. Perfect from Rahul |

I like it!
Even Hawkeye is not flawless. Hawkeye should be for shocking wrong calls not slide rule decisions the human eye cannot make. |

Another one bites the dust! Night watchman not as valuable as Rahul though.

Must confess to being alien to this spirit of cricket nonsense , use every trick in the book within the laws for me , it's 2025 with far more at stake albeit financially than the days of flanneled trousers and shaking hands for the sake of it , much prefer the modern way of reacting like the Sidaj and Akeel dismissals earlier , the old game wouldn't survive in modern society viewers want so much more.
Play to win whatever it takes and make them change the rules if they feel the need would be my take on it , expect i'm in the minority but hey ho ![]() |

W G Grace was known for his gamesmanship as well as being a stellar all round cricketer. It's always go on to some extent - Bodyline for instance.
India will be kicking themselves at the moment, Jaiswal and Nair's dismissals were inexplicable. As a result the game is 50/50 now i reckon, with the pressure being on Rahul to bat most of the way through if they are to win. |

I digress.......
Wouldn't mind guessing that French final loss will be freshened up in Sinner's head for a few seconds at least , remembering he was matched at 1.01 at Roland Garros so after winning in Australia he knows he should be going to America in search of the calendar slam. Couldn't be expected to match the French final but top notch sport all the same ![]() |

![]() I see we have a lot to teach you padowan! Dixie mentioned WG Grace but there were plenty of others too! You have a lot of great cricket books to read! Lucky for me I heard Jon Arlott tell stories! |

I've just finished reading Henry Blofeld's reminiscences of Test Match Special WD, brought back memories of summers past, some great stories there.

rahuls antics getting his hundred is why this match now is 50/50 ,

I remember John " one of the most promising players in the country " Arlott very well WD , attended over 100 John Player league matches back in the day following the Richards / Greenidge bandwagon for the Hampshire boys wherever it took me , attended some crazy grounds non more so than an away game at Darley Dale in Derbyshire , at one point some sheep found their way onto the ground
![]() So i do go back a very long way attending matches and old school in many ways but still not a fan of this spirit whatsit ![]() |

Did you find your way to Mote Park, Maidstone in August 1971 Hayden ? It's the nearest ground to me and was always well attended but sadly no longer hosts Kent games since the early 2000's.
Richards and Greenidge opened the batting in that game, was great for a little lad like me to see players like that live. Kent also had some great players, Knott, Underwood, Asif iqbal etc. on show. It wasn't much of a thriller as Hampshire only made 133 and Kent romped home by six wickets, but i got all of the players autographs so had a good day. |

I went to Kent more than once for certain Dixie but can't quite recall Mote , Canterbury with the tree for certain though.
Kent a nice team to watch in those days and Brian Luckhurst a particular memory and of course everyone loved Knotty and deadly Derek , such a long time ago all these memories and i've no real memorabilia to help recall many great days out , traveling then was a joy rather than a chore knowing what you were about to witness , hate long journeys these days and don't go anywhere unless i have to. Can't remember all the people i met but there were plenty of faces , Leslie Dwyer was a good old jobbing actor from back then and i accompanied him on a 5 hour train journey and helped him memorize his script ( you'd remember him if you googled ) and also had the pleasure of being introduced to Bill Frindall who played a few games for our second X1 in the seventies , that was against Surrey only not the Oval , Guilford maybe. King Barry Richards was the man for me though and my totally biased view is to say i've still not seen anyone make any sport look as easy as he made batting look , you'd swear he was dismissed through boredom most of the time rather than being out thought by bowlers , absolute travesty he didn't play more test matches or more accurately wasn't allowed to play , averaged in the seventies but obviously over far too few matches and the cricket loving public were robbed of not seeing more of his genius. Great days ![]() ![]() |

The first day of championship cricket i ever saw was when Hampshire played at The Mote in 1969, it was the third and final day and it was the first day of the school holidays at the end of July. I was 8 years old and went with my grandad, he said Kent should win as they had Hampshire in trouble after Day 2. Their second innings was wrapped up not long after we arrived and Kent were set just 170 to win. Luckhurst and Denness opened and without any trouble put on 84 for the first wicket. This is an easy win i thought - then an hour later Kent had been bowled out for 112 ! All 10 wickets fell for just 28 runs, Jesty and Castell with 4 wickets apiece. The great Barry Richards was in the side but only scored 2 first innings and then did not bat in the second due to injury i believe. I did see him in televised games on BBC and he always looked class, playing proper cricket shots but scoring at a bazball rate at times.
I was a Kent member throughout the 90s and went to many away games too but never quite got to Hampshire. I did see the 1992 B & H Cup Final at Lords between our two counties which Hampshire won due in no small part to a terrific spell from the quickest bowler i ever saw in Malcolm Marshall, one of his wickets was Graham Cowdrey who had been going well at the time. Unbelievable that both of those left us at a youngish age. Kent captain that day was Steve Marsh who was a former team mate of mine for Medway u19's - he wasn't even our first choice wicket keeper amazingly enough . I remember Graham Dilley and Neil Taylor were playing for Dartford U19s against us in one game and of course we came off second best. Leslie Dwyer, the irascible Punch & Judy man from Hi De Hi wasn't he ? A character i could identify with at times ! |

Nice write up , yes that's Dwyer played Mr Partridge
![]() Good mention for Trevor Jesty , just fell short of international standard really but modeled himself on Barry in every aspect and tbh even started to look like him certainly in posture , when he came in at No4 we used to joke it was Barry in disguise looking for a 2nd knock. Still feel choked for Malcolm Marshal and the sad way he left us , dreaded cancer and unbelievably weighed as little at 4st when he died which was heartbreaking especially given the fact he was a great athletic specimen , faded to nothing ![]() You've had a nice cricket upbringing yourself mate by the looks with a bit of action as well , nice1 ![]() Up late watching the West Indian game and at least they're making Australia fight but still a lot to do. |

Tough to call now with a lot to do for both teams , that line up doesn't half look better with the NW sending Sundar down to No9.

England strong favs again now. What a great game but yet another terrible call by the Umpire. Is he from India?

RAHUL THAT STUPID HUNDRED DEINETLY LOST INDIA HERE

Pant and KL snaffled, lovely.
Excellent bowling from both teams |

Great catch. Game over now.

Should be GSM but India will cling on to something whilst someone as good as Jadeja is out there.

Draw looks awfully short @4.6
Only two wickets in that session but draw still too short @8.6 Draw looks short @260 ![]() |
|
By:
And gets shorter, still
|
|
By:
Might be a lot of runs, but India have looked very solid since the last wicket.
|
|
By:
Just had a look at the market and tempted by the draw at 300 now but I am greened out on the other results so don't really want to get involved again.

By:
Needed that one. Well done Woakes.

By:
Amazing how much action there's been on the brink of an intermission in this series.

|
By:
Gotta love Test cricket
Well done everybody for greening out Pant run out was pivotal to result imho |
|
By:
easy to say, but india would be 3-0 up this series, but for 2balls, gills stupidity 1 test trying to get 150 with a six. and rahuls run for his 100 , pivotal

England have bowled well but for once this has been a very average effort by the Indian batsmen, some of their dismissals were terrible. Rahul got a good one but the others were largely avoidable, even Reddy who had played sensibly lost concentration there on the stroke of lunch. I expect them to be much more focused for the next test. I can't imagine that if Kohli had still been in the side that they would have let this match slip. Presuming there isn't a final twist and England do go on to win then it looks like the batting line up will survive for the next game, that would be a shame as it needs shaking up.
Hayden- you have been watching the Aussies V WI game - are the pitches out there really that bad now or is it more due to bad batting ? The Aussie batting line up doesn't look as formidable as in previous years which will give England hope for the winter but i fear the Aussie bowlers will still win them the series whatever. |
|
By:
These two will have to give it a go at some point, not going anywhere at the moment. No point leaving it to the last wicket. My guess is they are going to creep it down to 50 wanted then play a few shots.
|
|
By:
Very difficult for batsmen Dixie and as difficult as i can remember viewing under the lights , that said there's been some jaffa's bowled and these Windies are so up for this test , Green showing what a class player he's becoming by surviving the barrage , i'd say you'd struggle to pick a world X1 that'd make 300 on this track.
Should be good tonight if i can stay awake , they're already chasing 181 so need Green out very early and try to get some batting before the lights as it'll only get harder. ![]() |

Another shocker from the Umpire. Outside the line! The match is tilting back to India.
|

By:
Bashir comes on to bowl after sitting in the pavilion. Thought he could not bowl until he had spent as long on the field as off it. That rule changed or never applied in Test cricket?
|
|
By:
Depends on the type of injury I think.
|
|
By:
It used to apply if you left the field then came back on, he has not, maybe that is why or could be as you say I suppose. Wish the commentator would enlighten us.
