You may be spot on WD but always find these scenarios difficult to criticize , these captains have advice from all angles but in the end only hindsight dictates whether they made the right decision , reckon you're probably right but still a difficult one to agree across the board.

If you can defend 500 in a day or even 375 on day 5 you do not deserve to win. Look the pitch is not a minefield and England could bat this out but you have a chance of winning a Test Match why did Jadeja not throw the bat?

Trying to set a tempter, whilst retaining
a bit of a hard ball for Sunday morning and new ball Sunday night, difficult to judge!!! |

I just think it's respect for what this England team are capable of doing and tbh i reckon the Gill mindset would have been less cautious against even the might of Australia.
Think that potential 0-2 terrifies him. |

"If there is rain there will be clouds" - we'll make a meteorologist of you yet WD !
Joking apart, it's dangerous to pay too much attention to the weather forecast when working out tactics and when to declare etc. Lets not forget that we were forecast rain on Day 5 last week at Headingley and none arrived. |

True dat but clouds is clouds. Will help with swing. Yes no rain last time too much fear and aura around Bazball.
Look at Stokes. Wins two tosses gives India best of batting conditions twice, confidence up. England 151 overs in the field 89 overs rest. Batsmen’s brain fried bowlers toes bleeding |

Take no notice of me anyway as my best result's a draw so take your time Shubman

I think they have enough now surely - England would need a team of Gilbert Jessops to chase down over 500 !
By:
india batting too long here

By:
Yes 550 always looked the right time , any second now i'd say

By:
India remembering what happened in the first test.

Wonder whether they think this England side of egos will go for anything.
Therefore, set a stupidly large total at 6/7 per over and they reckon England will take it on - meaning they'll be taking inordinate risk On this dud deck, maybe those risks are the best way they think they have of taking ten wickets... |
By:
Look how supremely easy batting has been once the ball is ten overs old
By:
I'd defend setting 550 to the hilt but combination of respect of the capabilities and the 0-2 fear have persuaded him to make it 600.
Obviously no criticism of Jadeja as he's at the crease with the captain. |
By:
(Personally, think this is absolute lunacy. They've stuck around for way too many runs)
By:
agree^^
By:
500 was enough. could have had more overs to bowl before slose of play
By:
Yes agree 550 the call i think.
You can see this going one of two ways , couple of big partnerships and it's a nailed draw with a session to go or England go 80-5 and we wonder what all the fuss was about ![]() |

what a stupid shot from crawley just leave it you dip

India have scored at 5 an over with ease, so no reason why England could not score even quicker i suppose, hence the extra caution in setting a target.
Records being broken all over the place, India have never scored over a thousand runs in a test until this one, also they have scored more runs in the first two tests combined than any other team has before in test history. They were only 15 runs short of the all time record for runs in a test against England. |
By:
technically inept batsmen, ok hit and hope players
By:
Pope must be up there in the Test XI of Worst Starters of an Innings
By:
Zak needs dropping and come back to Kent to sort himself out. But McCullum and Stokes don't like admitting that they are not always right and just cite the odd occasion when Zak has played a cracking innings as justification for picking him.
By:
That's the mindset we get these days though isn't it in that test match approach is now around ODI level and ODI is nearer to T20 , we love it when it comes off though so can't complain too much and it has helped resurrect test cricket , swings and roundabouts so we can't have it all ways just when it suits us.
The modern technique in this England era probably tells us that prodding for the next 100 overs will mean almost certain defeat and 1-1. |
By:
I think they don't have a clear alternative and, as such, choose to back their chosen squad to the hilt
By:
there has to be a better opening batsman in the country than crawley. bobbins fielder to boot, defo not upto top level international standard

Dragon - Zak is actually a decent fielder (has 64 catches in tests) - any player can drop a dolly like he did today, i've seen Joe Root spill a few like that.
Ladbrokes/Corals are only giving 33s on an England win, have they no shame ?! |
By:
I got my draw price to equalise. Happy with the outcome. Have left the red on Engerkund, not give red. If they win from here I would be on cloud nine so the money doesn’t matter.
We are turning to the post mortem before the last rites. If the odds allow it I shall consider a huge Hail Mary play although I think the chances of rain are now receding. There are few reasons why England should not bat out the day in this pitch. There is plenty of batting left although the ball is only 16 overs old. Should they survive to 30+ overs unscathed they have a fighting chance. |

The indications are that England could wrap this up by tea……………… the evidence is there… 13 runs, 0 wickets in the last over! ![]() |

I would prefer to get it corroborated by a local. It is supposed to be raining now. I checked out at 6.4 and now it is down to 5.6 on the draw so an indication if may be raining |

Should clear up by 11 from the forecasts but you never know. Happy to have the draw. Did you see or hear Black Sabbath last night? |
