That'd be my gut, too.
Relatively late in his development and seemingly, several have gone from spinner to outright batter (at the highest level) but none spring to mind that have gone the other way. I know nothing of the magic of spin bowling (perhaps evident with the question). Maybe it needs years of muscle memory, and the like but then a part of me thinks, why not? And if anyone can, I imagine Stokes can... |

why did broad announce his retirement yesterday , day 3 of a test match , most id think would leave it until after the event has finished ?

why did broad announce his retirement yesterday , day 3 of a test match , most id think would leave it until after the event has finished ? Was thinking that myself. To get the crowd stirred up when he's bowling? To make sure he had a farewell he thought fitting of his career (and ego)?  |

would think Eng quite pleased to get off..regroup a bit..come up with some ideas..
don't think pitch will change much..so dry anyway and no live grass on it..if they manage to get on later today might get a bit more swing but be surprised if it does a huge amount.. |

they've got a contract though currently Jumper that guaranteed them a test every summer (not sure the duration - though as FoB says was discussed during the last test)

The Oval is steeped in cricket history as a test ground and long may that continue!
One of my sporting highlights over all sports, rugby, horse racing, greyhounds etc. is being at The Oval when Devon Malcolm bagged 9-57 against South Africa in 1994. You just cannot put a price on a day like that. |

We only used to have 6 test grounds really and certainly in my lifetime typically played 6 home tests a year...the addition of Hampshire, Durham , Glamorgan and a rather dubious bidding process at one point that nearly crippled a few counties has made it all a bit more complicated.. |

Yes lots of history at the Oval Slippy, and even more Ashes history at Headingley arguably. No Ashes test next time in Manchester or Leeds feels wrong with two guaranteed in London imo.

30 yrs ago THE OVAL usually meant draw with both teams scoring 500 in one innings and one usually getting 600 on scorched outfield,ball zinging to boundary

The Oval is a fantastic cricket ground. Until I went there I thought Old Trafford should always get a Test along with Leeds and Birmingham but Old Trafford is an awful venue that needs upgrading.
Old Trafford is also full of Northern Monkeys who appear to know little about cricket and j dust in talking at the top of their voice about things going on in their sad little lives. I hated the place and coukd nog wish to leave. Even yoh Convicts wound gave to admit that Lords and The Oval are both excellent facilities for the punters! |
