I feel a little sad for the people who have bought tickets for the match missing out on seeing Steve Smith bat!
I have to confess I love to see batsmen getting hit. On the gloves on the arm and the inner thigh is a personal favourite as I know from experience it bring a little tear to the corner of your eye and makes you blink! I like to see them hit on the shoulder and now I like to see them smacked on the front of the grill and on top of the helmet too.I love to see them dancing about the crease and caught like a rabbit in the headlights. What I don't like to see is anyone getting hurt and not being able to continue. I don't think the odd purple bruise did anyone any harm and that that doesn't kill you makes you stronger. I do not want to see this happening on a dodgy pitch, however, that is insane. There is s psychological battle going on when the ball flies around. There is fear and panic induced in the dressing room. What I like about Sunday in particular was the way Tim Paine got out. He faced up to the challenge. He chose fight instead of flight and he got out hooking. That was beautiful. Similarly Labuschagne got hit and girded his loins and remained stoic and staunch. I loved that too. I think I liked it so much because at school all the tough guys, rugby players and the school bully were all afraid of the hard cricket ball. I loved smashing it at them when batting and making them jump out of the way when bowling. If I had one wish given to me by the almighty it would not be to have Marlene Dietrich tapping at my window is a shortie nighty it would be to be able to bowl FAST! |

Starc should come in for Siddle imho. He is fresh, probably angry and raring to go. He offers something different. Despite being tall and quick he often pitches the ball up and can skittle a tail. With their top batsman gone Aussie will need to bowl England out twice and if they do that they have a chance or retaining The Ashes.
Both sides batting is severely suspect and to contradict Voltaire God is on the side with the big Battalions not the ones who shoot best! Aussie need to bring up the heavy artillery and imho Starc is one of them as he can also rip through the top order with a new ball too. I like Pattinson but contrary again to popular opinion sometimes it is easier to face a fast bowler particularly if he is not doing much with the ball. |

If they stick with Siddle or Pattinson they really are dumb I'd drop Siddle and go all out pace, its going to be super fast and if England wanna play brutal then the aussies have to do the same And one last thing... Warner needs to get his mongrel back or go home, what the eff have they done to that bloke? he barely pipes up now |

Unless Headingley are forced into deliberately slowing it down that is, if the "charity" lovey mob have joined in the debate expect a dust bowl and it bouncing ankle high to the keeper

I thought Headingly was good for batting these days specially is there is no likelihood of rain and more importantly cloud but tbh I really don't know how it is playing.
It is not just about bowling fast. I personally found it easier to play fast bowling. No time to think, pure adrenaline and heightened reactions. Easier to score off too, use the pace. Nudge and nurdle, deflect and glass. Wait for them to get angry. Duck and sway early on with a nonchalant " well that was a waste of your time and effort " then wait for the half volleys and long hops. Rotating the strike is really useful too. Don't let them settle into a rythum. Keep nicking singles with push and run. Starc is dangerous because he brings it back into right handers. Roy and Bstard play with the bat well away from the body. He can be a bit hit and miss in a Test Match but I think he is also a beautiful bowler and bowls as fast if not faster than Archer. Pattinson is a live wire and maybe Old Trafford is his designation. I think Warner has not been the same since his shoulder injury. He might have curbed the verbals but his aggressive batting style has also been curtailed to some degree and I think he has questions over stamina hanging over him where his strike rate slows down which was quite noticeable in the IPL. I think the English batsmen are getting some measure of the Aussies and it is imperative to stay aggressive when possible. Trying to neuter Lyon should be a priority. Make no mistake though the Aussie fast bowlers are good, very very good imho and if the pitch offers nothing our other bowlers look like trundlers. I thought Leach did a good job. |

Warner's been getting some absolute beauties. I haven't seen him do much wrong.
Smith's absence hardly justifies the drop in Eng's price. Had he played he would have been targeted and hit again. Leaving him out and bringing Marnos in makes sense. Bancroft is the bigger worry, so too Paine who looks good but rarely hurts you. England have nearly got their best team on the pitch and look good for 1-1. |

If I'm being honest I preferred the fast bowling as well, the scoreboard seem to go up quicker when facing the quicks. It was the spinners I lost my rag with, esp with being pinned back and the scoreboard staying where it is, it became frustrating. Village bowlers bowl at around 75mph.
When you are not used to it they are brisk enough. I prefered to face the tall straight armed fast bowler. Easy to read the line then you can concentrate on length. I used to take half a pace forward so I could go on a play a full bowl or quickly and the word is quickly bounce backwards to deal with anything short. The key imho is also to get in line quickly. We were always told to go back and across but fast bowlers are too quick at times. The back leg should just go across so you can get inside the line, if you are there you can twatt it and if not it is easier to twist or genuflect out of harms way. No helmet, watch the ball. You only have to move your head six inches for it to miss, not that hard for a young man or professional athlete who should be used to it with the advent of bowling machines. Do these guys practise? I would say this though it is hard and it is dangerous. There is a level of courage that is needed and when you get abpove 85mph it is easy to make a miscalculation on length, particularly just short of a length. |

I faced a young David Lawrence when he was at Gloucester an adrenaline rush all right-not least because no-one, and least of all David, knew where the very fast balls were going.

It must terrifying to face someone who can bowl that fast and that accurate, I was a little petrified at the 70mph pie chucking stuff at first
and on the dead pitches we were playing on it probably wasn't even that quick really 96mph bouncer coming right at you must be quite terrifying even for club players? But batsman do have awful techniques against it lets be honest, smith look like getting hit every time and he's elite level Smith's technique will mean he gets hit more often as well, its awful for someone who has somehow averaging 60? |
