Let's keep it simple.

If Smith doesn't play England win!

No rain in the forecast, draw looks impossible.

Don't expect England to make any changes, Roy looks a walking wicket opening the batting but there are no outstanding candidates to replace him.
Would like to see Denly open and have Roy in at 4 or even move Stokes up to 4 and have Roy at 5.
At least give him a chance to see if he can do something before he's dropped from the team.
There's no way he's a test match opener but he might be good in the middle order, lets find out.

Australia might give Starc a game instead of Siddle who looked pretty ordinary.
If Smith isn't fit then Labuschagne will play.
Don't see them making any other changes.

Hard to disagree with any of the above. Just need England to do the business and what a last two tests we'll have in prospect

England have been handed a further Ashes boost with the news that James Anderson will return to action for Lancashire Second XI on Tuesday.

The 37-year-old injured his right calf on the first morning of the opening Ashes Test at Edgbaston, which England lost by 251 runs. The Second Test finished at Lord’s and, in Anderson’s absence, ended in a draw.

Anderson remained with the squad throughout that match and bowled with the coaching staff, who have decreed that he must get match practise if he is to be selected in a Test. He went into the First Test having not played for a month following a similar calf issue.

Anderson was not ready to play in Lancashire’s ongoing Championship match against Glamorgan, but will play for the Second XI against Leicestershire in a three-day match – he is set to bowl on the first – at Northern Cricket Club in Liverpool, with a view to playing in the Fourth Test at Old Trafford, where there is an end named after him, on September 4.

England have kept faith with the squad for Lord’s, meaning they have stuck with the misfiring Jason Roy and Joe Denly, and that Sam Curran will be withdrawn from Surrey’s XI at the close on Monday, the second day, of their Championship match against Hampshire. Conor McKerr will replace him.

Really worried the way we have juts turned to Archer as a bludgeon and the load we have given him. Would also like to see him pitch it up a little further on helpful pitches and throw in more yorkers and some slower balls. Seriously concerned about his workload too.

Have to say it was the most exciting bowling debut I have seen since I T Botham! There is nothing like seeing a genuine fast bowler in action. He was frightening. hardened Test Cricketers were frightened. Paine's dismissal was a gut fightback instinct yesterday and it did for him, caught hooking. Loved that.

I thought Woakes should have opened the bowling from the Nursery End and come on for Broad at the Pavillion even though he got two wickets.

There is quite a lot to discuss from the Test.

Bancroft is a walking wicket at the top like Roy. Labuschagne should come in with Khawaja moving up.

I would get Denly to open and move Roy to 5 and give him a last crack for now even though we don't need any more free scoring middle order batsmen. To late to bring someone else in.

It must be so hard to take Archer off but we need more from Broad and Woakes with the new ball.

I really think we need to digest what happened. The most dangerous ball in cricket is the one that moves away from the bat lest we forget. I would rather a fast bowler trying to hit me in the head all day. It is not difficult to work on technique to avoid it happening. The head only has to move six inches.

We need to get back to thinking cricket rather than enjoying the Gladiatoral Entertainment rather Root does. This is not about payback, it is about winning! But I do love a little paybackWhoops!

weird how woakes is being seriously underbowled. hardly bowled day 4 edgbaston and just 3 overs yday on a ground where he has a phenomenal record. case for him taking the new ball never mind if stuart broad has a strop

Bit early to be talking about Jimmy Anderson but I can't see how he can get back in this current team until his fitness is fully proven.

You could bring him in for one of the underperforming batsmen but the batting is so weak as it is that it seem's very unlikely and we don't need 6 bowling options at home vs this Australian batting lineup.

Archer seems a shoe in
Leach must play too unless we go in without a spinner
Stokes is a given as well

So that leaves Jimmy vs Broad or Woakes.

Woakes is a complete gun in home tests and we need his batting even moreso with Leach playing instead of Moeen.
Broad is bowling as well as I've seen him bowl, hes gained 5mph and is pitching the ball up at long last.

If Jimmy was fully fit then I'd bring him in for Broad, as things stand I don't think he's worth the gamble for the 4th Test when you consider how well Broad is bowling.
If this was the 5th Test and we needed a win them it might have been worth the risk but as things stand I'd need to see him playing more than one 2nd XI game before putting him back in this side.

One thing we don't know about Archer is how much the heavy workload affects him.
His bowling action looks effortless and if he says he's fine, wants to continue to bowl and is bowling well, what else is Root expected to do?

He is a strong young boy. I am sure he can cope but he should not have to!

Woakes should have opened the bowling and then maybe Archer could have come on for Broad! Woakes may have taken two or three wickets and then a fresh, hungry and angry Archer could have been devastating against the middle order. A kwality fast bowler should be able to take wickets with the new ball with helpful conditions. Broad and Woakes are good bowlers.

The default is now Archer. Madness!

Like I said, a lot has happened. We need to take stock. If Archer is bowled like he was at Lords he will have a glorious if somewhat short Test career!

with Smith having "delayed concussion" it would seem very difficult for him to be fit to play as early as Thursday.

I have no idea what the ICC concussion protocol entails, or if there even is a protocol. However, the NFL 5 step protocol is very difficult to fit in within a week and for a player to be cleared for play-Smith has less time than that.

rugby is i think 3 weeks
By:

There is an ICC protocol, although the wording is quite weak, with no set periods of time for individuals to be excluded from further participation following a concussion.

Generally, concussion symptoms will settle within 2-3 days and a player diagnosed with concussion is ready to return in about a week but in some individuals this time might be shorter or longer.

The full concussion management guidelines are available at the ICC website.

https://icc-static-files.s3.amazonaws.com/ICC/document/2019/01/08/718da49b-8c3b-41a4-a879-39156ddeb6bd/ICC-Concussion-Management-Guidelines-Apr-18.pdf

Comparisons to other sports, such as rugby, are, perhaps, not particularly valid, cricket being a non-contact sport.

My interpretation of the statement verbally delivered by Steve Smith was that it was more likely than not that he would not play at Headingly, there appearing to be a strong emphasis on the number of steps that required to be followed and conditions met.

Additionally, of all cricketing nations, you would imagine that Australia would be the most conservative in bringing players back following an incidence of concussion.

sounds a bit flimsy angoose, and as the NFL found out it was not good to leave the decision to team Drs/HCPs employed by the same people as the player.

no mucking around now and the players have to be cleared to play by an independent neurologist

Suddenly, thanks to one man, cricket is a contact sport again!! Seeing batsmen beaten for pace time and again and in physical danger is a throwback to when you needed balls of steel.

Because of the hapless Bayliss and young Joseph, England are one down and not one up. No Leach nor Archer at Brum...

I would have ditched Roy, move Denly to open and brought in Foakes but that aint happening.

Marnos Lasagne was fantastic. Floored by a knockout punch and bounced straight back up. Best technique on show by far. Thought Cummins showed great courage and skill too.

Carey for Paine is pretty onbvious but again aint happening.

It must have been amazing Whispering. Where did you sit?

agree with that Injera

presumably the England players will now get the stats on Smith's replacement and might have some idea on how to get him out-unlikely that Root would have been able to work that out for himself on the pitch

it seems bleeding obvious to me to drop Roy, play Foakes, open with Denly and move Johnny up to 5

especially when Roy "dropped the Test match"-I thought like Malan previously he was a gonna, but hey "we're keeping the same squad"
By:

Injera,

Was in Compton Lower, front row near the sight screen but did not see what was happening off the pitch. I prefer Compton Upper right by the sight screen also and under ET as the Nursery. Sometimes you can get close to the bowlers arm and see when it moves or spins.

It was a pretty good atmosphere, not quite football. A little quiet around me tbh. Archer was electrifying though. Roy dropping Head cost England a shot at winning. Two non lbw's for Lyon and three dropped catches by Warner also cost Australia lest anyone think it was all England. We could have lost on Saturday. Also Lyon did not have a second slip or gully where a couple of edges went.

Foakes for Roy is screaming out but is not going to happen. Geoffrey is 100% that Roy is not Test Class certainly as an opener. I would bat him at 5 even 6 at Headingley and if he does not get a score he is gawn.

What makes Archer exciting is that his bouncers are not that short of a length. It is devlishly difficult to avoid them. Anything pitched in the bowlers half is very easy to avoid. Anything beyond halfway makes it extremely difficult. Foot movement is awful with modern batsmen. Very few can sway.  All you have to do is bend the knee and twist and it misses your head but a couple like Smiff ducked into balls that were not that short and that is the psychosis that Archer has introduced. I expect Aus to come out and man up but that could be their undoing.

A cool head with bravery is required. Both Captains were poor imho as well.

Suddenly, thanks to one man, cricket is a contact sport again!! Seeing batsmen beaten for pace time and again and in physical danger is a throwback to when you needed balls of steel.

Spot on. I am not sure how many people appreciate the physical dangers and pain involved in being hit with a cricket ball. I also don't think people understand when this fear is introduced how it affects your ability in decision making. The point of the game is to hit the ball with the bat. Once you have removed that as the primary focus you are in interesting territory!

If Anderson is fit who does he replace? no way can they drop Archer after that showing

Broad bowled well for periods but I get the feeling he's likely to be the one that gets dropped

Anderson should do the right thing and retire after this series though, give the up and comers their chance, Broad to lead the line and show the younguns the ropes over the next 18 months before he retires

Will be sad to see Broad and Anderson gone though, they've been true test greats

WD - good write up! Archer's so slippery isn't he. No gather, just runs throught he crease. Whatever his actual speed is, he must appear even quicker.

Agreed - the short balls don't often get the wickets, the follow up, fuller balls do. Batsmen get stuck in the crease and you find yourself mesmerized by the pace.

I reckon Broad and Anderson think they cant/wont be dropped-hence Archer not playing in first test

I have to agree with what's been said about Archers workload, we can't just expect the lad to bowl 25 over spells of raw pace and looking to knock the batsmans head off, it is fun but you have to keep him fresh and manage him well as well, otherwise he's going to suffer side strains

We need to use him tactically, bring him on in bursts if that's what they want from him, they didn't do that at Lords, they kept him on for far to long and Root needs to be told to pack that in

These prices are hugely influenced by whether Smith plays or not and unless you know something the market doesn't, now is not the time to be getting involved.
If Smith doesn't play which is looking more likely, would expect England to be 1.7 - 1.75
If Smith does play, would expect England around 2.2 - 2.3

Australia batsman Steve Smith has been ruled out of the third Ashes Test after suffering a concussion.

Smith, 30, was hit in the neck by a 92mph bouncer from Jofra Archer on day three of the second Test, but passed an initial concussion test and returned to continue his innings.

Coach Justin Langer confirmed his absence after Smith sat out of Australia's training session on Tuesday.
