VV...they've tinkered with the toss in the CC and away teams have actually done worse in the 3 years since the toss change has been made compared with the previous 3 years

That may be the case but can you really compare a home -advantage over an overseas team to a County team familiar with the climactic conditions whose only disadvantage is an hour or two's travel before play?

I don’t really see all the rage about Curran missing out. It’s obviously an unusual situation but if you’re deciding Stokes is available, Curran is really the only logical option to miss out. That’s we’ve got two very dodgy specialist batting picks in the side in Jennings and Buttler plus two other marginal ones, in Cook and Pope, is basically irrelevant: you don’t keep a bowling all rounder in for a batsman to make way. We already had more bowling options than we really needed three of the four innings we’ve bowled. Once you’re lining him up against a batsman, the extra bowling sixth bowler gives you means nothing, apart maybe from in subcontinental heat when you don’t trust your spinners but still have to pick two or three of them. So then you’ve got Woakes, who’s clearly better than Curran or Rashid, who isn’t and whom I wouldn’t have in the side ahead of Ali but again isn’t really in the firing line as it’s a different role.

In case the ball starts to swing later, is it not wise to keep one of your best swing bowlers fresh for now? I already have the feeling that it is going to be much harder to take wickets on this strip.

They’ve got 5 bowlers, should all be reasonably fresh unless end up bowling for 5 sessions.

Perhaps but if it turns later Ashwin will win them the game anyway if they score enough runs. You can park a spinner on at one end after the new ball (and actually Ashwin can bowl with that too). That’s why you should generally err on the side of getting at least three quicks in the side unless it’s a real graveyard for seamers Bunsen.

fair points VV

looking at the last 10 years in test (since aug 2008)
away teams having won the toss...30%
away teams having lost the toss...24%

so yes a bit of a leveller

I quite like home field advantage in sports though and I see no reason for people wanting to diminish it (especially with arbitrary measures)

the beauty of test cricket is cricketers throughout the world get the chance to test themselves against teams in all types of conditions
not sure I agree with (for example) being able to rock up in india and have a bat every time is the test it should be

The big issue is the trend to produce pitches suited to the home team which adds to the bias against the visitors. They already face a different climate, different ball, different food etc. so the toss would only help if the pitches were all prepared to be as similar as possible across countries.

India would have been doing a f*ck-site better if they'd prepared properly for the conditions.

otoh if the heatwave had continued, it's unlikely the series score would be the same.

Also had they had a fit bhuvi and won the toss at Lord's it may have been a very different result.

Small things, rather than something intrinsically wrong.

Eng going to be batting last on this LaughShocked. Series still very much still alive.

And wtf is Honey-G doing commentating on Sky?

and again re toss. The side trailing in the series should have the choice. Toss if the score is level
