I laid England after they went 1-0 up in the WC semi final on the basis that we would either be in the WC final or I would win £££££££

I was also going on the assumption that Root and co aren't complete tw@ts at pitch reading by playing only one spinner. If it seams then England should have the upper hand. If not then hopefully draw comes into play. Days three and later are a different proposition maybe but that's a long way off. |

Depends on who bats first Charlie. India have 3 decent seamers plus two injured ones! It could go bandy if India win the toss and put England in on a grassy Egbaston strip. It will dry out over the day!

Whispering - Like you I'm surprised by the colour of the pitch. There's grass on it which there should be so that's not news.
Dark brown on MOnday suggests it's had a load of water on which again is obvious. They have to make it last in the hot weather that's due Thursday onwards. I would have thought he would leave it greener but as you say, this game starts on a wednesday and I reckon they want 1000s in the ground on saturday if not sunday too. The question is how dry is it. ECB don't allow any pitch at County league level let alone test level to start damp. What we need is Aggers or Nasser to put their hand flat on the deck to guage the temperature. If it's cold, there's moisture. Anyway, with good weather expected that dark brown will go light very quickly. Might we see a high scoring game???? I'm a tad surprised the draw has drifted.. |

Regarding spin - if it did start a tiny bit damp it will seam AND spin.
Later on in the match I would think it will spin quite a lot. But I've no idea at what pace! Slow spin is hardly a problem. |

I’m green all over with draw lays low 4s, backs high 4s and 5 but still wondering how best to proceed. Thing is, even if it’s a good track, you just don’t see England’s games at home drawn without rain and not often even then. So while I don’t rate England’s side terribly highly, odds on, which does feel bonkers, is arguably justified by home form, even against good teams. The price that’s a long way off therefore feels like the draw, even with it climbing but I’m itching to back it at 5.1 looking for the inevitable massive over reaction to a start without immediate wickets.

I do think this is a very dodgy England side, by the way. Rashid is a controversial and deeply dubious pick, even given how sparse our spinning options are. The guy probably won’t bowl that many overs but then why the f is he playing? He’s not much with the bat by comparison with Ali and he’s not a good fielder. When did he last bowl three or four spells in a day? The batting is weak: Root is obviously a great and Bairstow is very good but Cook could well be on the wane; Stokes is no better than just about plausible and the others have poor records in test and F.C. cricket. Then you’ve got far too much reliance on the old men with the ball, albeit that they’re good old men. Curran ain’t a test cricketer for me yet and Stokes’ bowling hasn’t looked at all penetrative since he changed his action.

I still think it will be a flat deck. Could be something there for the first session.
Just a calculated guess at the moment but with ticket sales well down, it would be crazy to prepare a 3 day wicket & leave all the weekend punters with no cricket & ECB with no cash As I noted earlier they could easily have produced an ultra green seamer but have gone for a brown/beige looking deck. That doesn't mean either team can't collapse badly even on a shirt front. Seen it many times, especially from England. This Eng team doesn't fill me with confidence either. Lots of players out of form & getting older. Root, Johnny & Jos look in form but and the bowlers have hardly bowled. Radish hasn't played red ball games for almost a year and is not known for being a tough character. Broad and Anderson have bowled poorly at times in the last year (too short mostly) and I don't rate the back up. They have played one game in the last month. Stokes seems to be missing something & has the impending court case in his mind. Curran looks like a medium pace dobber to me. Can't see him making much of an impact. I've backed the draw heavily at 5s and will top up as is necessary. Also laid Eng so massively exposed on them. Only thing on Eng's side is it's there 1000th game. Can't see that making any difference though. |

jimmy is still the number 1 bowler in the world according the rankings. gotta be some doubts though over his form and fitness coming back from injury but his numbers have been exceptional over the last couple of years. just very little support from broad and the back up bowling has been very weak recently
england have won their last 5 or 6 tests at edgbaston by massive margins. it's the one ground where they nearly always play well |

Just read Jucel's OP, Cracking stuff as per normal.
Our Bowls green has now been shut due to flooding?? We have an amazing drainage system but big cracks have been developing over the last few weeks due to the intense heat but now can't cope with any rain, this would definitely change things as a spin factor. I will keep on reading through the posts as this looks like a cracker. |

Draw looks very short as does Eng that makes India very good value but only on a betting point of view. Teams are never worth trading pre toss in my opp. |

Going against my rule and backed India pre toss as this looks like one where batting first/second won't make much difference, very rare these days.

Bowling first is supposed to be the play at Egbaston!
I am confused.com as to where the toss advantage lies. I am half with Juce on a Chairman's wicket! A grassy deck is Russian Roulette. I think England have the bigger problems. Can't see Rashid bowling too many in the first innings. Dont understand why Moen is not playing instead of Malan. |

i dont know much about how strips will act with weather etc....but this summers unusally hot weather might be a one off...bit of a lucky dip.

Batting would be light with Moeen, he's just too carefree & we have enough of those sort of players already.
Root took 4 for spit the other day so I expect that was in the thinking. He can bowl just as well as Ali and Malan's batting is more steadfast. Plus Malan is an excellent catcher/fielder. It's definitely not green WD, it was a darkish brown two days ago and I saw it yesterday & it was beige. There is some grass left on it for the first morning but I'm still banking on a fat Chairman's wicket. If it's going everywhere first morning I might red out & wait til it evens out. It's rock hard so it should be a great batting wicket at some point in the game. Always value for shots here too. In T20, 230 played 230 here in the last game. I know it's apples and pears but it's give you an idea what health the overall square is in. Can't remember the last test match where the draw didn't breach double figs on the first day. |

I think the ECB and BCCI are in cahoots re pitches. We could have dished up some real green filth here but we haven't. If you look back to the previous series the pitches were really really green. Indistinguishable from the outfield. When England last toured India the pitches were good for batting and didn't really turn til later in the game. There were some large scores even from England. We scored over 400 three times which is rare for us. Maybe the boards have agreed to produce fair wickets and get away from the sort of pitches they served up to South Africa. |
