I’m a lot less sold on the how good India are narrative than many posting here (I’m not saying they’re bad) but got to be terrible news for England if it’s a Bunsen, given we’ve got worse spinners and worse batsmen against spin. Ali and Rashid both have merits as cricketers but are indifferent to bad spinners in test cricket.

Added to that, England's quick bowling is looking questionable in whatever conditions. We haven't said that in quite a while.
Jimmy's coming back from injury and both he and Broad will be relied up yet again. Of the replacements for those, Roland-Jones is out for the season, Wood's fitness a concern, Stokes is up before the Beak, Ball has not trained on, Woakes has struggled with injury and form, Overton won't pull up any trees, both Currans...?? It'll be incredible if Broad and Anderson can play 4 let alone 5 tests in 5-6 weeks. |

I agree with most on here. I've backed India quite heavily at 3.35. I just can't see how these prices are right. Hopefully they will correct themselves before kick off and we can all be green. There's no evidence of it yet though, England are still being supported and the draw is holding, surely that has to change, surely.

Rashid is facing a lot of criticism going into the test and I am surprised no one has mentioned the consequences of that. He isn't the greatest spinner in the world and up against a team that plays spin well. Eng have put themselves under a lot of pressure off the field. If he fails, there will be a lot of questions asked. India should be all over him.
Broad and Anderson look toothless more often now(and still get treated like they are the best when often the third pacer is bowling better). Interesting series to look forward to. If England lose, I hope they lose 5-0. They have been getting away with miserable starts from the top order and an average bowling attack for too long now. |

Also, I don't think England have it in them to play out a draw if needed(that's the way we play, we take the game to the opposition bla bla bla). The only team that can avoid a defeat by playing for the draw is India here.

On the flip, no runs for Dhawan or Pudgy.
I wouldn't be worried about Pudgy but Dhawan is a real streaky player and when he is out of form he is ghastly. Rahul should open with Murali & Pudgy 3. I'd have Ashwin as the all rounder, depending on the wicket and drop Hardick. I don't rate his bowling at all and his batting isn't setting the world alight just yet. |

I still think this will be a close fought series. I think the sides are relatively evenly matched. Both hVe have problems with personnel. England as usual have a top 3 problem and unusually India may have the same problems. I would go with Murali and Rahul with Pudge at 3. I love watching Dharwan bat but feel the other two are more suited to Test Cricket in that an early wicket is a bad liability. India will need 5 bowlers so if England use the new ball well they will put India under a log of pressure.
I still think the fascination will be how the pitch plays, grass, reverse and spin. I don't rule England out and my view is to cover the draw in case the pitches prove roads although taking into account what Juce has said about Egbaston. I am at Lords for Friday and Saturday |

Outfield does look lush so may affect ability to reverse. Too early to call the wicket save we expect spin later on. Will the first session be a barnstormer on a grassy surface? Will it be a batting paradise. Everybody seems to be ruling out the draw probably with good reason but I think it may be a runner if somebody scores 550 first up. Mind you there are some stroke makers on both sides. 550 may come up by tea Day 2!
I am not fully convinced by either bowling attack nor either batting unit. I don't think Pandya is a good enough bowler to be included. I would rather play Ashwin and Kuldeep Yadav with Ishant, Umesh and Shami. I'd like to see Pant play for India but I don't think he will in this test certainly. Still very excited about all this! Don't rule out England. Egbaston is one of their most successful grounds. |

Agree about the outfield. Wonder how much it costs to have irrigation like that.. Hmm, not sure why the groundy is mowing that other pitch, unless he's doing the whole square. Normally would have a seat on the back to do that. The brown one looks central to the sightscreens so I assume it's that one! So green seamer it aint then. |

If that is the case injera won't the toss be crucial? Back the side batting first then throw the kitchen sink on them after lunch, maybe take a check after tea in case it swings?

Certainly appears like a bat first toss doesn't it! As you say, looks like it'll be wise to favour the batting side.
I've made a right mess already. Layed the draw at 4.4 for shed loads. Bottled it and took a measly profit at 4.5! Look at it now... I then layed Root's Journeymen at 2.13. Oh well, take the medicine and try again. Can't see reverse swing with that outfield can you? 2 spinners 3 seamers? I think they play 4 seamers including biffer Stokes. I think Malan may be the fall guy. Both spinners play. There is a view that Jajeda and Kuldeep Yadav may be a better pairing than Aswin and Yadav.
