If it's up to the umpires they'll probably abandon and if it's up to Faf or Dean Elgar they'll probably abandon, would any of the forumites fancy batting on that minefield? If they carry on and someone gets badly hurt who'll carry the can? Far safer and easier to call it off.

Come off it dodger!
It has been the same for 3 days. Less wickets fell today with a higher run rate! Man up everyone. God bless Brian Close in his grave! |

Lots of statements about what Betfair rules state, and what BF Help has said about abandonments, can I just remind everyone of the clear and unambiguous way in which Betfair settled the "Next Government" market after the General Election last year.

whisperingdeath - i dont see how the draw lay is a free bet in light of the rules stated by tomtimtum where the result is declared a draw by officals if abandoned. that said i know where games have been abandoned in past that bets have been voided.

I asked Betfair to clarify whether bets would be void in event of match being abandoned in light of their rule. 7.2. They confirmed that settlement would still depend on whether officals declared the match a draw or abandoned. 7.2 Test matches If a match starts but is later abandoned for any reason other than weather (which may include but is not limited to: dangerous or unplayable wicket or outfield; pitch vandalism; strike or boycott; crowd protests/violence; stadium damage; acts of terrorism; and acts of God), Betfair reserves the right to void all bets, except for those on markets that have been unconditionally determined. If the match is not scheduled to be completed within five days after the original scheduled completion date, then all bets on markets for this event will be void, except for bets on any markets that have been unconditionally determined. Rate reply: Bridey - thats not what they told me either this morning or just now. BF said that exchange bets in the match odds market will be voided if the game is called off for a dangerous pitch. ring the helpdesk and ask them to read you the email from the traders. |

By:
1978Reggie i was on the phone when the email came round and i total agree with you, the traders email did say it will be voided. But the ICC rules state it will be classed a draw.

I don't ashley think the game will be called off. Tomorrow morning will be crucial. Bumrah can make the ball talk but the rest will probably bowl full. A new ball causes problems. After an hour or so I think things will settle down and India will from my point of view hopefully go on to claim their victory...rain permitting within the next 2 days.
Incidentally Michael Holding got most of his wickets from fuller length balls. A good knuckle rattler or throat rasper will help with the fuller ball. Could SA pull off the miracle? I don't think so but do not like to bet against them. The Umpires have got this badly wrong imho! |

I was on the phone talking the sceanrio's through. I was trying to get Betfair to post tonight what they would do if the game was called off so people could adjust their position and others would not be backing the draw at an incorrect price.
When he said he had just received an update from the traders saying they would in fact be voiding the bets. I dont want them to do that im just passing on what i was told. Feel free to total ignore it. |

cheers Reggie - have just spoken with them and your correct bets will be voided. I should've spoken to them initially rather than relied upon Betfair chat.

Never NEVER rely on BetFair chat. Those guys usually don't understand anything but the basics.

I spoke with them this morning and received an email contrary to that !! but i just spoke with them and they confirm what you say !!

Might be a good idea if they told the Betfair twitter reps!

Aye Varden Voo - they did check with someone else and to be fair it was this morning. Anyone know what the purple place's stance will be on this? ho-ho.

People hanging on every word of @betfairCS twitter account as regards to void or not to void.....but @BetfairCS is lowest on their totem pole & dangerous to swallow anything they say as gospel.

cheers Reggie - have just spoken with them and your correct bets will be voided. I should've spoken to them initially rather than relied upon Betfair chat. you're welcome, when its unclear its stressful for all. fwiw I laid the draw on here in Antigua in 2009.... the game was called off after a few balls due to unsafe run ups and my losing bets were voided........despite the official result being a draw..... and what was scheduled to be a 4 test series ended up being a 5 test series in the record books I have also just checked the playing conditions on the SA cricket website- the latest version I could find is 15/2016 season though, the playing conditions state that captains can only agree a draw either inside the last hour or if there are a minimum of 15 overs to be bowled, whichever is the later. so assuming these playing conditions haven't changed the skippers can't shake hands on a draw until Sunday evening |

I'm still reluctant to remove huge green on the draw, would hate to be on the wrong end if Betfair pull a switch.

Reggie, I remember Antigua - was a draw backer and gutted. I feel for you, but if I may tell you my tale I was double lucky on that game . iirc the previous game England were shot out very cheaply and there was a ~2 week gap before Antigua....2 firms priced up the draw in Antigua at 2.75 within 20 mins of the end of the preceding test and I lumped on....knowing the docile nature of wickets in the island of Antigua (granted it was the first game away from the Recreation ground)....anyway pre toss draw was about 2.0 ....with the run ups and the drizzle about at start of play I was laying off on here at about 1.8 when the umps intervened a couple of overs in......one bookie paid me out on the draw straight away, the other tried to void my draw back, however as this his was against their rules at the time and I took them to IBAS and won ....getting a decision in 24 hours. (they since changed their rules) Then to my surprise bf also voided the match odds so I got paid out on both sides. - bought a new Vespa and called her Vivienne after the great man! Don't mean to rub it in but it was a lucky escape and I learnt a valuable lesson that day about various market rules..... after a couple of hours of panic. |

Was the only choice they could have made, will be interesting to see what happens when one rears off a length and raps one of the batters on the knuckles

Nice work Reggie. I remember watching a couple of deliveries and was clearly going to be abandoned so was piling into the draw at 1.8 and lower. Think I even tried IBAS with that one too but no joy....

It would be nice if BF were proactive and opened a thread on the cricket section. Just a simple statement about what will happen if it is abandoned due to the wicket being deemed dangerous. Void or draw, that's all we need to know BF!!!

If this is abandoned it sets a dangerous precedent that teams are going to use in the future. You will see batsmen on days 4/5 when the team is in a losing position keep taking their hands off the bats and making it look like a minefield so they can get the game abandoned. Elgar was pretty much doing that last night, there was a fair bit of sportmanship going on. Normally he doesn't flinch when he gets hit but he knew he could work the umps.

There is a difference between a day's play being abandoned and the entire match. Can't see the latter happening with 3 days played, and the former (if 2 days abandoned) = draw.

Wasn't conscious overnight to be trading this where there were packets to be had but have reduced my 13k draw liability to 11.7 with a bit of backing draw at 11 and laying off at 10 and in the 9s.
