Ok nobody saw this coming! I have heard the pitch gets better days two and three but the first session is usually very difficult. We all expected England to be 30-3!

It really is ground and pound from here. Even if we don't win the match the effect of keeping their thoroughbreds in the field will have far reaching consequences.

kwality schadenfreude!

I have been thinking England could still get bowled for 300 here so every ball and run has been a bonus.

So we have got reverse swing after 54 overs!

I am on over 341.5 runs

Would have been dreaming for Root to come in at 125-2! Now sitting in trepidation.

tbh I think he could have played forward and straighter for the dismissal but he has done a wonderful job for the series. If we lost early wickets the Tour could almost have been over. A bit dramatic but not fanciful!

the reverse has got me a wee bit concerned but 2 down is the norm for england, usually 2 down for 30

Happy to eat humble pie regarding my view of Vince at 3. Looks assured and classy.

I share your concern Terry. England have gone nowhere fast despite that great partnership. 20+ overs of reverse followed by the second new ball. 280 all out?

I take it the spin in the wicket is due to the dampness underneath. This is unlikely to continue tomorrow? Lyon has bowled very well. Would have liked to see them go after him where possible. I guess we shall see seam from now.

This is such a crucial session now. We cannot afford to fold or all the old doubts come in. If Root can get going he will also score fluently and move some close catchers out.

lets judge him on the full range of playing conditions, not just a day 1 belter

aus 2.64 eng 2.98 draw 3.45 surprised aus so short tbh priced like eng are 3 down

think we'd all take that as a worst case scenario. the strongest part of our line up from 4 to 7

as they were saying england have scored 400 once in ashes tests since 2010/11 and still won 6 matches

england bat 4 sessions 1st up more often than not they'll win this series

Vince certainly has enjoyed benign conditions. But it's about getting the job done and he's doing that.

When was the last time we had 120 on the board before Root came in?!
