AB + Morkel out and Steyn coming back from Injury. Big Vern, one of my favourite bowlers, back.

Durban a result venue after decent 1st innings scores. Weather forecast good.

I tried to convince myself NZ a good chance, but failed. SAF bowling looks to strong. When in doubt, a draw back to lay. 4.5 would be nice.

Be careful they are playing this in the middle of winter. The light could go quick.

Draw's at 3.8 or so: would prefer to lay it at this point hoping to be able to buy back later although still pre game for a later still lay.  If someone takes my lay at 3.8 and it has to ride I can live with that.

Good point. But floodlights are allowed these days.

Tyco, how do you think the NZ seamers will go in Durban?

Good question pxb!

I think more pertinent though is how well will the batsmen go?

I think SA have the stronger batting at home and the better bowlers and depth of bowlers. To me that says back South Africa.

I like the way this NZ is shaping up but they are still a couple of players short lacking penetration after Boult and Southee and their middle order stops me backing them.

I don't think Morkel will be missed as much as AB

The talk is on NZ having a chance of a first series win, I don't think so!

Missed the 4s on NZ but would rather wait until after the toss. This has been a graveyard for the Saffers from what I can remember. Result ground and made a very nice profit last time on Eng at 2.5 when they had a 100 run lead going into the 2nd innings. Turned out to be a very good Xmas.

Hi pxb, good question indeed. I do not know enough about the Durban pitch to really give you any good analysis. Ask of a NZ ground and I would be happy to wager an opinion. I thought Southee and Boult could have bowled better in Zim, but Boult is better than he was a year ago which is promising.
I think they will be ok and Wagner if he plays will be probing away as he always does, but I think they may go with Bracewell. Im not sure who is going to be batting 5 but Watling at 6 does not fill me with too much confidence....
They may have to play Santner for his ability to bat at 7 and that would put Wagner out if they play Bracewell or Sodhi misses out.
Lay of the draw still for me at these prices.

I'm not sure what to do in this game. Weather seems ok, but normally this Test is in December when the pitch has been baked for a few months.

Just remembered there was an ODI here at a similar date, last year
http://www.espncricinfo.com/zimbabwe-south-africa-v-new-zealand-2015/engine/match/848847.html?innings=1;view=commentary

Might be worth a perusal re pitch, conditions  etc.
I seem to remember it was a pretty good deck for batting.
If it is a batting wicket that then takes spin, I would be worried about laying the draw. I say this as neither side has a world class spinner.

you HAVE to wait and see here unless you're the groundsman or know him or his staff.

the conditions are a huge unknown, and in Steyn, Philander, Southee and Boult you have four bowlers who could, if the conditions are right, make a mockery of the draw price.

9.30am We were supposed to have the toss now, but a wet outfield (think its dew, not rain but wet nonetheless) has delayed the toss by 30 minutes, which could also mean the start is pushed to 10.30AM. I'll try and get that confirmed asap.

Cook and Elgar are both stodgy players. I can imagine a sedate start with both trying to get through the new ball.

I would have thought so. The only time they don't is if one of the grounds in the series doesn't have them
