I think the draw is very backable. Bound to trade lower.
I can't see clusters of England wickets. (Famous last words) |

Another Lords borefest, I reckon England would have been around 400-6/7, until Lords can produce some help for bowlers, that shouldn't be playing Test Matches there and I stated this last year, as well.

are you two on crack?
Have either of you ever been to Lords? Having said that it is a shame that these benign pitches are giving very little to the bowlers. There are few finer sights in sport than a fast bowler steaming in with his dander up. Good toss to win. Aus resources may have suffered if they had to spend two days in the field. England must do the same unto them to proceed in the long game. |
|
By:
Yes, been to Lords, many a time, but they don't produce good cricketing wickets. Australia, will take late wickets tomorrow evening, just because the England batsmen will be tired. Lords itself is a brilliant ground, but you have to provide a bit more of an even contest. There was hardly a ball move off line this morning and the 1 wicket that was taken, was thrown away by Warner.

Ponting has also criticised the pitch saying it's too much in favour of the batsmen.
All I would say is wait till England bat to make a real judgement and also remember it's a 5 day match. A couple of balls from Moeen turned sharply today.. The pitch won't have had any water after Tuesday onwards. By next Monday it will be very dry and possibly crusty with possible uneven bounce. I'm still hoping we'll save the game but most tests provide plenty of twists and turns and this one will be no different. |

Its not the end result, there in all probability will be a result here, but the 1st 2 days and most of the 3rd day are generally borefests, with the bat totally dominant and nothing for the bowlers. Most people that watch Test Cricket attend on Days 1-3, obviously with Ashes matches, they are well attended on Day 4 and if a good match is in progress Day 5 as well, but the bat is far too much in charge at Lords on Days 1 to 3. Listen to people who know, both Michael Vaughen and Glen McGrath have stated, that the wicket is not good for cricket.

Australia have hit back hard. This might be a road but scoreboard pressure is going to be telling for England IMO.

Mitchell Johnson has to go. If Englang are that scared of him that at the most historic cricket ground in the world we have to be subjected to a wicket like that on day one, it's time for the sake of the game he goes

It'll be gold if Oz win this, will serve poms right for slowing the pitches down. Even last test wasn't much there for bowlers, a lot of the batsmen got themselves out. Good fast bowling that has batsmen jumping all over the place and scared to face the next ball is test cricket at it's best.
Having said that, English pitches aren't the only ones that are too batsmen friendly, it's becoming a frustrating trend throughout the world of test cricket. |
|
By:
Unfortunatly, what we don't want, is batsmen jumping all over the place and scared to face the next ball. We want to see good fast bowling, against good batsmen, on a wicket that gives batsmen an excellent chance of scoring big runs, if they play well, but give the bowler a chance of taking wickets, if he bowls well, which is what we haven't got here. Now I would always state, that until both sides have batted, you don't know how good or bad the pitch is, but this one has had nothing in it today, whatsoever. Get the Australian bowlers on it and it might do something, but it also might not.

Australia only want to bat another 50 overs here and declare on 600 and have a bowl at England for 40 overs, there is spin on this pitch and I expect a world class spinner like lyon to take a lot of wickets
|
|
By:
I don't really see, how you can say Lyon is a world class spinner, he is a good spinner, who if the records are correct, has taken 152 wickets, with an average of 34 per wicket and a strike rate of a wicket every 11 overs. A world class spinner, are bowlers like Shane Warne, who averaged 25.4 per wicket, while Muttiah Muralitharans record was even better as he averaged just 22.7 per wicket, both of these bowlers took a wicket every 9 overs. Graeme Swanns record, is better than Lyons, as he averaged 30 per wicket, with a wicket every 10 overs. Swann and Lyon were and are very good Test Match bowlers. World Class spinners have records similar to those of the 1st two mentioned.

Aus a great lay at 1.80. And the draw a good back at 2.40 The most likely scenario Aus get 550+ at tea and then get 50 odd quick runs after tea to have a go at Eng before close. I cant see the odds moving much until Eng start batting. Even if Aug get 600, the market will think its a flat track and not expect Eng to lose 20 wickets in 3 days, so cant see Aus trading much lower than 1.6. The other scenario is Aus could lose 9 wickets for a further 150, leaving them 480 ahead and Eng around 125-1 or 2 at the close. Odds then would be 2.4 Aus and 1.8 the draw.
|
|
By:
I'd be a bit wary of going big on the draw. Clarke may have an aggressive declaration in mind, to give Eng the slightest sniff, say 525 dec.
Aus do not want a draw here, which will be on the cards if they bat past 600 and tea. |
|
By:
Yep no way Clarke is going bat very long. Expect them to throw the bat around after lunch. Mitch Marsh will have a license to thrill

I wilk be looking at the session runs lines

I'd expect the declaration 5 to 10 overs before tea. I don't see the draw much below 2.2 before then.

How are the Oz and draw prices likely to change if Oz move along at say 4 an over?
Very rare for me to bet on test cricket and, when I do, I tend to be incredibly bad at it! |

Both will come in a bit without wickets, but not much. |

Anyone else agree England were just very unlucky yesterday and didn't play much worse than in the first test except for the catching (admittedly pretty crucial but the sort of chances dropped yesterday, especially Root's,are those really tough ones that occasionally just stick like they did for England in the first test). We seemed to beat the bat numerous times but just not take the edge, Broad many times. I could see Oz collapsing as they try and put the pressure on this morning and being all out for sub 500. Not sure what happens next though? England probably start to bat defensively and getting bogged down won't help. Having said that the outfield is lightning fast so they're never going to score too slowly, especially once Root, Stokes and Buttler get to the crease. Draw the marginal value for me with some play lost to rain likely in the last 2 days and England quite happy with a draw from here.

|
By:

Somewhat unlucky. Hardly, 'very'. England's problem is today will be the best batting day and then they face the prospect of batting 2.5 days under steadily worse conditions, with a break when they watch Aus bash it around for 50 overs. If the rain eventuates then this is probably a draw, if not then probably an Aus win. |

england were unlucky to lose an important toss, and whilst they didn't bowl badly, neither did they bowl extremely well.
an excellent performance from the bowlers in the first hour, rather than an average one, and england might be thinking about chasing 400 with all three results in the mix; as it is it's going to be closer to 600 unless Clarke does something funky. I don't see why he would though, given that it's likely the best bowling condition will be on day 5. |
