don't think you say australia's attack is far superior in english conditions. anderson and broad are fine bowlers and none of johnson, starc and hazelwood have done much in england. moeen certainly bowls too many bad balls but he gets people out and at a better average than lyon

as for the batting australia's top 4 definitely looks more solid than england but they are weak at 5, 6 and 7 whoever they pick. england will always fancy their chances of knocking over the last 7 wickets for say 150 as happened twice in cardiff

Sounds like Brad Haddins test career may have come to and end, great servant to Australia who always was up for the fight, a fine keeper and batsman. Sad to see it end like this

Rogers is solid but I wouldn't swap him for either Cook or Lyth whose best could be just around the corner. Warner's very dangerous but he has a bigger ego than KP and can't resist booming off drives to good length balls.

I'd be more worried about Smith if he came in at 5 or 6. At 3 he's more likely to face swing which must surely undo that odd technique..

Shame about Haddin, I hope it's nothing serious. What an amazing chance for the debutant though. Not a bad place to start your career..

great venue to start a career but could be in for a baptism of fire. a complete novice at international level and the ball wobbles all over the shop after passing the bat at lords

Haddin has the same demons as Trott, I hear....sorry to hear him go under these circumstances, a doughty and extremely tough competitor and always up for the fight.

Odds are no surprise...even as a pom I can see that the first test turned on the Root drop. 43-4 and Oz would have been through us for less than 200 - different result. They will be much more competitive at Lord's and will be inspired by the venue. Lay of Draw looks the starting position.

yeah - could be that, he is staying with the team, which presumably means it's not his daughter.

I really can't call this one. Who is going to turn up? I am going to try and break the habit and not have a pre match or immediate post toss bet. Will try and stay out of it during the first day but that is probably impossible!Tough decisions for both teams will probably not be made. The only change I can see is Marsh for Twatto but even England fans knew that was the best call before the First test.I would go further and call up Cummins for MJ.  I wouldn't play Siddle, honest trier that he is because that would just play into England's War of Attrition against their Attack. I think MJ is on the brink again and if he doesn't get it right at Lords Aussie could be 2 down with 3 to play. It's a really hard call and left field but I think it makes sense. I can't see it happening but England must see him off and go after Lyon again so putting stress on Starc's ankle. He is their chief threat. Lords is unforgiving. Bowl it right and you can take wickets but get it wrong and the square boundaries are short and there is a slope.England should give Bairstow a go because of the form he is in. Ballance must be sacrificed despite his courageous performance. His technique is at sea and he needs to refind his form. Bell get's his last chance for me and at 3. This will send a strong message out to the rest of the team. I think Stuart Fraud, " The Enforcer " and " best white ball bowler in the world " has benefitted from being dropped from the ODI side. His first Test effort was magnificent. Well done to him, I am not his biggest fan.I have a feeling the pitch may seam about first day and there may be wickets. I am inclined to oppose the side batting first which is contrary to what I normally do. The pitch should bat easiest on days 2 and 3. I think days 4 and 5 at Lords will be reasonably ok. Both teams will get a second chance on this wicket if they mess it up first time. I wouldn't rule out a draw again contrary to popular opinion.

Err, a really strang post this is, MJ is on the brink, I don't think so, he bowled well at Cardiff, didn't have much luck and his batting is very dangerous, down the order, why should England, go for Bairstow, we already have a decent wicketkeeper, who bats well, Bairstow can come in, if Butler has 2 poor games, why does Bell get his last chance he score 60 in the last game and is one of the few, that this new attacking style, possibly wouldn't suite and agree that Ballance looked shaky but still scored 61, so you cannot drop people who score 60 and 61 for the next match regardless. The team will be exactly the same as the last Test, as you don't change a winning side.

and with the Haddin withdrawal maybe even Twatto retains his place.

That's my point. England are vunerable up top. The game was nearly done with England at 43-4 on the first morning but Haddin spilt the chance. That is why Ballance has to go. If you have been watching this summer he has been awful. If he were an animal he would have been put down. Retreating 2ft into your crease to play a half volley is a warning that all is not well. He will be found out if he continues to play back when all the talk has been about bowlers finding the correct length..full.

The problem with Bell is his run of form has been poor. He is a great batsman to watch and I think England best technically but for me he needs to show the same pluck Ballance showed. He should be our best batsman and bat at 3, a place where he can neuter the Aussie attack and set a platform for the middle order which has already showed its mettle. I do not want to see Root and Stokes at the crease with shine on the ball.

The ball needs to be pitched up at Lords. Cummins I think would be more effective. I could go on about MJ's record in England but that would get boring.

I think Bairstow has technical problems with his batting btw but he is in such great form it would make a lot of sense to give him another chance at 4. Having another RH bat, who incidentally plays across the line would be beneficial against Lyon at Lords. If he comes off at Lords his aggressive hitting would put the Aussie attack under severe strain particulary MJ and Lyon. That puts pressure on Starc's ankle. I am sure Hazelwood will have a better game and find the right length and line.

Anyway that is my point, perhaps not well elucidated. Both temas need to make changes and I think both teams won't save Haddin. Let's see. Boof is shrewd and tough, what will he do?

With no weather issues and a couple of negatives for Australia it looks a straight forward England win.....doesn't it

What could possibly go wrong.....even the price England looks too good to be true

I'm going to wait until the toss before I get cracking

Good luck to you all

Excellent. Although it probably means Lehman won't roll the dice with Cummins. 3 changes is too many.

I can't see Johnson getting dropped. Apart from his batting, he isn't injury prone like the other Aus quicks, and that's a big plus.

Lords is a reasonably high scoring ground and usually good to bat on for 2 or 3 days. With weather conducive to batting first few days, a good toss to win (and bat).

A draw back to lay.

I think you are right pxb. My initial draw lay is showing a profit so I've now reversed into a draw back hoping to lay again at a shorter price in play. I've set an initial target at 2.2 but will be flexible depending on how things go. Hopefully we won't have a day 1 collapse.Scared
