This comment sums up all that is wrong about English cricket

if india survive till after lunch tomorrow there will be less than 150 overs to play with england about 150-160 in front they will not be setting less than 350 in 100 overs some people are taking it for granted that egland can and will score 200 in 40 overs india will have no interest in trying to win the game and if the pitch is so good that england can score at 5 an over do you suggest setting a target of 3.5  per over please remember that this is a 5 match series and england dont need to win to win the series but they cant win if they lose this game

Dhoni will have no interest in trying to win from here. Expect negative bowling and defensive batting from here on by India.

Although, I wouldn't discount an England collapse with batsmen under instructions to get quick runs.

My comment earlier is how a team that have not won for 10 test matches may be thinking.

On 21July I wrote about how well Root and Ali were doing and all they needed was to stay in till lunch. Some on here thought that was negative and that they should start going for shots, after lunch they did and they threw away a draw.

India don't know how to bat defensive

England will not enforce a follow on even broad when asked last night said 100% not.. so we know cook certainly wont. still good batting wicket and cannot see india collapsing 2nd innings. Plus cook will put game way out of india's reach. will depend how long these last two wickets stay at crease.

exactly betfair 20 mins advantage england 1 hour about even lunch + big adv draw please note time to include change of innings people think that eng can score at 5 an over and then set england a target of 3 to 3.5 are sadly deluded worst case scenario india will have to bat 4 sessions for a draw for draw backers

England should really wrap up the last 2 wickets within the first hour.  Best case a lead of 220 odd with around 80 overs to play.  Then it's down to Cook and the management really.  In an ideal world they bat for 50 overs and get at least another 200 odd runs.  Leave a target of 420+ in around 4 sessions.

This is England though.  Cook, Robson, Ballance aren't scoring at 4 an over.  They're also more likely to bat India out of the game than dangle a carrot with a declaration that looks achievable.  Not to mention taking those last 2 wickets, which has proved tricky thus far in the series.

Maybe England management bereft of ideas will follow Amla's lead with an agressive declaration.

Target of 380 at tea?

Very rare in the modern game that the follow on is enforced. England dont have a front line spinner who can bowl unchanged

from one end. Attack is reliant on two bowlers. Getting the Indians to follow on is inviting trouble. Hopefully England can

give themselves around 120 overs to bowl India out in their second innings. That gives them a decent chance of winning.

england bowlers too tired/injured no real spinner

England will bat again to give the bowlers a rest as they must do - possible scenario will be England finish the tail off within 40 mins - bat until tea or just after & have an advantage of 420 -450 - they then will have 115-120 overs to bowl the opposition out - all theoretical but how I imagine the dressing view this position

Thats the million dollar question betfairchat - More of a chance to do it with the bowlers relatively fresh imo.

I dont think this pitch is going to turn into a terror track but neither is it going to get easier to bat on. Why

not make the Indians bat on it for the last day ?
By:

When: 30 Jul 14 10:34
yeah agree gonna be tight finish whatever happens but feel india can bat all day knowing they cant win as dont think cook will dangle carot.

imo the draw the best value here at mo but that could change later
By:
Captain Wurzel
When: 30 Jul 14 10:41
I dont think Cook will dangle much of a carrot either. imo I think you get just as much

value by batting the other side out of the game so you can maintain aggressive fields for

the whole innings.

England can win even if they need 140 overs to bowl India out second time round - given their depleted attack this is not an unreasonable guess - but only by enforcing.  As others have noted he wont be able to declare with 50 overs left today, and 140 in the match, because he wont dare leave sub 400 (given Jordan's form and Ali's inexperience).  So the weak bowling attack argument applies to both enforcing and not enforcing.

So don't enforce and it's 120 overs.  Do enforce and you've a bit more time (should you need it).  This game is 3, not 2, days old.  Arguments for not enforcing are typically underwritten by the fear of losing.  This cannot happen here.

The key thing here is regardless of our opinions Cook will 100% not enforce the follow on.( assuming England have that option )

its also how tired the bowlers are if you could get them to bowl at a good standard for 140 overs I dont think cook would want to chase 200 in 40 overs

not enforcing is fine if we're go hard.

4/4.25 sessions and 380 to 400 takes the india win out of the equation.

but with the risk of giving them a chance of not losing the series, as well as the pressure on robson and cook who are unlikely to score quickly, we could easily see 430 to 440 and three and a half sessions / half an hour tonight.

Before Day 4 starts a game is 3 days old.

but i suppose you've got to ask whether two sessions rest for the bowlers is going to make any difference and whether the pitch is going to get any worse in that time.

anderson's rhythm this morning would be enough to tip the decision for me, but presumably moores et alia advised cook what to do before they even came out this morning.
