Simple for me. Lay WI anywhere up to 11 throughout the course of the entire game.
By:
laying WI at fancy prices at result decks is a horrible plan. You'll also be instantly out of
pocket by around 2 points should Chris Gayle turn up.. Probably wont happen, but windies could call up Gayle and Narine and Eng rest Anderson here. you wouldn't really want to be laying WI at 10.0s in that scenario would you? |
By:
One of the top 3 would have to be "injured" for Gayle to be considered
By:
heard Strauss interviewed this morning and he was very non-committal about resting players, but the fact that he mentioned the workload of the quicks is good enough for me to assume there will be changes.
By:
unless anderson got injury niggle then should play
10 days between tests is quite enough, could be nearer a fortnight if england bat first. rest him for the odis instead. West indies put up enough of fight in first two games to suggest england will go decent amount above sp here. Might become bigger prospect if england bat first. |

Pitch similar to one in 1995 series would be interesting
was brutal from memory ::: http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/current/match/63686.html |

By:
yep first ball of the match from curtley (i think) went sailing over the keeper's head and nearly went for 6 byes
![]() ![]() broad surely the more likely candidate for a rest. he's injury prone and plays everything. anderson is very much in and out of the 1 day side. |
By:
Laying WI has up to now been a great strategy in these tests. As others have mentioned posters on here have too much faith in windies.
By:
Just different approaches nigel. It's not faith in the west indies to win. More that their ability to compete is bigger than the market has given them credit for. Windies went from 30s to 10s within a few hours on Sunday when they bowled England out and have traded at 5s a number of times.
I don't disagree with you that a lump and leave lay of the windies is a pretty safe 1.1 shot. But trading the windies has also borne fruit in this series as well at better than 1.1. Both should be winning strategies. |
By:
I'll be laying West Indies again and leaving it. Will wait a week or so just on the off-chance they fly in a few players, very very unlikely though.
By:
In fact, for those who disagree that the West Indies are always too short, crunchyfrog's ***ICC Blind Squirrel (tests)*** thread gives conclusive proof. Over the last four years they've won 3 out of 34 tests, with an RoI of -68.2%, which is ridiculously big

Roach gone home....Tino in??

Edwards back in I would think

fidel/tino/ravi - county standard at best as a unit

should be doing all they can to get Narine in.
By:
nah, stick with this squad for remaining test and take a look in june/july for nz home series
couldnt stomach players strolling up halfway through series with money hanging out of pockets Dont blame them for taking the money but think players who are on tour should be left to get on with it |

such a pragmatist Step

Narine in the squad - this could be massive! Eng wont have a scoobies LOL!! ![]() |

Depends on the track. For the most part Narine was unplayable in the IPL.
By:
very difficult to read even on flattish tracks, apart from the legend of playing spin well (Bell), sic, who'll fancy him I wonder

I can see our top order struggling. This boy is quality.
By:
bit different in a test match in england i would have thought. anyway england will be 100 for none before he even starts warming up with no roach now
By:
Narine might have played well in the IPL but test match cricket is a bit different. Similarily if Gayle was to play he's not going to recreate the magic he did in tthe IPL.
By:
prob right there mafe, but I'm sure he'll bemuse a few before the game is up.
Mid range forecasts dont look good, summer over ![]() |

By:
errrrrrrrrrr.....Gayle has 13 Test centuries and an av of 41....
By:
obviously in the one dayers it'll probably be a different story. he's bound to be much more of a threat there.
By:
errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr... how many of those are Test Centuries of Gayle's are against England and what's his average against England? A lot less I'm guessing.
By:
It will be very interesting to see how Narine gets on. He's only played 6 first class matches (34 wickets at around 11 with a strike rate of 32).
His inclusion seems to have had a bit of an impact on the market. Windies could be backed at 10s yesterday but have come in to 8.2. I do wonder whether their attack loses as much potency without Roach with he new ball as it gains with Narine. Rampaul will have to bowl very well as Fiddy didn't look capable of causing too much damage at Lords. |
By:
Fantastic news. Ignore all this 'mercenary' nonsense.. Marlon Samuels played IPL and has been windies best player this tour. Let the lad bowl. In fact Narine is a unique case really. He was basically 'spotted' by the IPL teams for his performances in the champions league and not for west indies so he owes them nothing. Its hardly his fault the selectors are too dumb to miss a talent like his.

A lot less I'm guessing. Chris Gayle: v England - 20 matches, 1195 runs, 3 centuries - average 36 In England - 11 matches, 721 runs, 1 century - average 36 Interestingly he also has a very good bowling record in England with 15 wickets and one 5for! |
By:
Just in case anyone is interested. In this year's regional 4 day competition
Narine 31 wickets @ 9.61 Shillingford 38 @ 13.28 |
By:
not many england batsmen will have played narine.
he looks more than useful imo |

England of course want to remain Number 1 but also do what few teams achieve and win in Asia, especially India.
With that in mind, I was disappointed that Patel wasn't selected at 6 for this series. You can't just pick the guy for trips where 2 tweakers are required and cast him aside for series in which his batting had the greater chance to shine. He's a good batsman if not special. Patel, Prior, Bres, Broad and Swann is good enough isn't it? |
By:
just don't think patel's good enough in either discipline. 1 day cricket possibly but he's doesn't offer enough threat with the ball as a test match spinner

Very nice early arbitrage - bookies were offering 4.5 on the draw with BF at 4.
