This one seems dumb. The joke was how bigoted and awful Basil Fawlty was as a character, to a nice German family. Small-minded English people were the target of the joke, not people from Germany.

I'm a 'leftie' and half-German, but I disagree with making the episode unavailable. Fawlty Towers was a satire of prejudiced attitudes, not an endorsement.

People don’t understand that the humour of the 60s and 70s was fundamental in changing prejudiced attitudes from earlier years. When we laughed, we were laughing at our own inherited prejudices and thus exorcising them.

He was, but it’s a double edged sword. Yes, his ignorance and lack of empathy (albeit under the influence of concussion) is part of the joke, but the outrageous goose stepping is the big part where everybody laughs. Are we laughing at the character or the impression? I say both.

I'm devastated - that was my favourite episode along with Waldorf Salad
Was watching the Three Amigos at the weekend and even that had had a scene cut - I really love the 3 amigos and had no idea I had been enjoying such pure unadulterated filth for all these years Not really sure where we go from here - Hitler was a bad man so I guess we re-write world war 2 history books to show him feeding the pigeons by the Brandenburg gate |

I'm suddenly feeling really cool for still having literal box sets of Fawlty Towers and Monty Python on DVD (because Python will surely be gone by the weekend).
The argument for DVDs over online streaming has suddenly become like the argument for storing physical gold - if you don't hold it, you don't own it. |
