Does the employer have to pay the other 40% or does the worker just get the 60%?

Up to the employee, they can top up if they choose to. My employer are currently topping up the government payment so I'm getting 80% of my normal wage.

The alternative is stop the scheme now, thousands of companies go bust and millions of people are unemployed. 1

Should the furloughed workers pay it back themselves over time?

Not sure how that is not going to be the case anyway.

Sure some will be saved but many will not as demand will fall for a lot of non-essentials. People will just not have the money. Social distancing rules will make many service industries impossible.

I'm going strawberry picking for a few weeks. A cut in wages, but how could you be anywhere nicer this summer.

Are you, Saddo? I think there’s gonna be a huge cut in wages for our type of work anyway. A 40 hour a week supermarket job might look tempting in a few months time.

Regarding our national debt. Let future generations pay the fooker off! I don’t think the furlough payments are gonna scratch the surface of what we already owed anyway.

I am, a farm in the Rhubarb Triangle where I played as a kid, looking forward to it though it will be hot in the poly tunnels. I'm not fussed for much work after that, unless I enjoy it or it's well paid.

They represent a significant source of revenue for government. In our latest forecast, we expect fuel duty to raise £28.4 billion in 2019-20. That would represent 3.5 per cent of all receipts and is equivalent to £1,000 per household and 1.3 per cent of national income.

Most of the furlough money will be recycled and will pay for itself compared to the desolation of pushing folk onto universal credit.

But...

If we underpay folk on furlough or take too long to get back then we risk losing the advantage the scheme brings.

Closing sports grounds tells folk it is unsafe so they are overly cautious in other parts of their lives.

A good strong message when the time is right should boost value of furlough, and get folk spending again.

Keep watching France, Germany, Spain and Italy as well as testing at home

Fingers crossed for not big spikes in the curve

And please wear a face mask if you can get one

Of course if you scrap hs2 or trident the tory grandees will lose out so it won't happen

Just look at all these new contracts Cummings mates are being awarded.

So that's trident, hs2 and well, don't be surprised if Rishi sticks another huge whack of tax on booze, cigarettes and particularly petrol.

He can't pp, he needs to cut taxes to boost spending not hike em up

We need more spending on vatable goods and those already bearing duty.

Helicopter money would be a good idea for getting it started, but impact would be not to build up to it, just announce say 600 quid for each person on electoral roll
Better still if its on a 3 month valid cash card

Yes, but he isn't a charity and he has to start balancing the books and fast, so that hopefully he can show he has the UK on a sounder financial footing post virus and pre general election.
By:
----you-have-to-laugh---
When: 11 May 20 18:20
Ha, he doesn't have to balance the books he has to nurse the economy through the disaster of corona,  if he fails then its disaster for us all.

Keeping cash in the system is all that matters

Then the system works again when the lockdown unfurls

Borrow the money at 1-2%...   inflate it away

One addition had I been Sunak would be to insist credit card interest was frozen for the period of furlough

We bailed out the banks a decade ago now let them help bail out uk

Yes, fair point.

The banks stopped their dividends and cut their interest rates to nothing ie natwest 0.05%.

They aren't helping anyone but a worst case scenario of housing crash, loan defaults they might be correct.

It might suit some people politically to see the back of trident & hs2 but aren’t these exactly the type of high employment projects that the govt will need to promote ?

Try borrowing off natwest at 0.5%

I got a remortgage offer for a bad credit risk for 30% of
Property value and they wanted 3.5 %, but it was a saving on
The 5% they had been stuck on these past 5 years or so.

The banks treatment of folk makes me weep.
