There have been no reports of claim processing issues.
So, credit where it is due, quite an achievement to get a scheme of this size up and running smoothly in the timescale that they did.

Report Whisperingdeath • May 12, 2020 1:00 PM BST
I have a lot of concerns with this but I have to say he has played a blinder so far. Much better than anyone with a job could have hoped for. My number one concern right now is will Companies be able to pay their employees the 20%. I think many cannot and many are tight and will not! imho the only way it will work properly rather than as intended is some sort of grant / tax brake for employers. How can many keep stumping up 20% with no income?

The bigger question is wtf is going on? This is not Ebola or a seriously bad pandemic. The survival rate after contracting the virus I think is in excess of 99% or close to. There is a huge huge huge financial / economic crisis looming and we are not even thinking about what we are going to do about it. This is most troubling.

Some Conservative thinkers have even suggested privately, as is the case in Germany, that a scheme such as this, could be made semi-permanent.

The Kurzarbeit system, which is a century-old is credited with saving a million jobs a decade ago, and is paid at 60% of wages, but is untaxed and applies to hours lost rather than requiring a worker to stop employment.

Such a scheme would basically be an expensive form of employment insurance, operating through the private sector rather than the Department for Work and Pensions. This is not in the Treasury's plans, as they seek to reaffirm the support is temporary.

Workers going back part time where possible, they therefore won't be getting anywhere near their normal hours and will get their money topped up to the 80% that theyb are getting now, very few will find themselves in a position where they will work in excess of the 80% so will therefore be working at a loss.

This plan should have been happening from the very start, instead of a few working for their full money and a bunch at home with their feet up (me included), everyone should have been at work part time and everyone get their money supplemented, that would have been fair all round.

The other problem that this will have caused, and it will be seen when/if workplaces get back to normal is that their will be an atmosphere of bad feeling between the "workers" and the "furloughers" going forward.

We are going to see the real thinking very soon, I think the realiseation is already there, but when the "R" rate goes above 1, whether they shut down or push on will reveal whether or not the only way is to just go for it or not.

Although not as blatant as the states, we are adopting in a more subtle way a similar approach to Trump, we are opening up, it's much easier to keep going in the face of the figures going the wrong way if you're already in the midst of attempting to get back to normality.

Once we have a lot of places back open again there will be a mood encouraged to push on and keep going rather than to allow ourselves to slip back down the snake to square 1, especially as there will be no guarantees that we'll ever succeed with the softly softly approach.

Social distancing is a business killer, you either open up and go for herd immunity or shut down completely and hope a vaccine is the answer, we have seen both examples used elsewhere, the one approach that doesn't work and causes maximum disruption is the one we are using.
