black pawn a5 f6 b b4 rooks d6 &e5 king g7 white pawns b3 f3 g4 b d5 rook b1 d3 king d1 whites move It's a draw. White has to move his bishop to e4/c4, pair of rooks swapped. Black plays rook rook e1+, another pair of rooks come off. This leaves an opposite coloured bishop ending that is nearly always drawn as each side controls opposite coloured squares. |

as a newbie to chess, how do you look at all the grid positions posted on this thread and know what is what and who is going to win straight away lol ?

it is pretty impressive, the game itself requires a lot of attention and concentration which I struggle to give it, waiting even 20 seconds for someone to make a move is a lifetime to me and I switch tabs, suppose I'm more suited to 3 minute games.

The shorter the game you play the more reliant you become on the equipment you have. You need everything to be fast. I never play a, say, three minute game unless there's an increment.

No, internet speed, computer and mouse in general. There are other things like not having other applications running. I've often found the clock time you appear to have left isn't correct.

You also need to learn when to pre-move.

A pre-move being when you make a move when your opponent is thinking. It's obviously not shown on the board but regardless of your opponent's move that is the move you make (if it's still legal). It's done to save time.
