It’s law to be vat registered at 85k turnover.

The point I’m making is countless small businesses pay a lot of vat as an additional tax.

Self-employed won't even be able to get assistance until June.
Govt MUST use the interim to enable self-employed to file more realistic earnings figures.
There should be an amnesty whereby the HMRC turns a blind eye to any historical miscalculations.
The future of this country depends on its merchant adventurers - now more than ever.

Many have done everything they can for years to avoid paying into the 'system', but now seek the exact same system to bail them out.

For to every one who has will more be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away. I tell you, that to every one who has will more be given; but from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away.

Should have seen my old man's balance sheet!
If he had a good year he'd look through the recent liquidations and put a purchase invoice through from them to reduce his profit.
All these creditors making his balance sheet look upside down, gawd knows how he escaped the taxmanLaugh
He used to ask me to do some proper shifty stuff Laugh
I've got nothing against sole traders, it's the only way to get wealthy in the UK.
Just there are risks to doing it and this is one of them

I don’t  know any self employed person who has begged for govt assistance. Like  employees I’ve lost money and will do so in the next 2 months.
However I never expected today’s news.

A more accurate measure would be to triple the declared earnings of the self-employed and pay them 80% of that.
Possibly backdated to make up for the meagre years.

Basically if you are self employed and you have filed a 2018/19 tax return you will get a cash grant of 20% of your declared profits for that year. (80% x 3/12). This will be received in June.

The maximum anybody can receive is £7,500.

If your profits were over £50,000 you receive nothing.

The grant is then declared as income on your 2020/21 tax return with the tax (and NIC ?)  on the grant payable under the normal self assessment rules.
