i know that when we see something we get thoughts about the object we see,and we can imagine something and get thoughts about what we imagine, but who tells us we are hungry, who reminds us of something that happened years ago, there has to be a command center saying"make him think of having a bet, tell him its a lovely day, tell him his driving licence is due for renewal next week.tell him he is thirsty.tell never to forget 2+2 =4,and all that stuff.

This a very interesting topic....
Thoughts are not a conscious thing. We can choose to accept them or dismiss them. Choosing them is a conscious decision that leads to ideas and then actions. We are off course in the realm of religion and awareness now etc making us different from animals.. We can not decide what thoughts we have though. Is the world around us constantly forming influences in our brain, yes, but I and me are not the same thing. How did we acquire a conscience, that is I, but it's the same thing as me. No idea about funny bones..Can't see the link....... |

No, you are wrong there.
Thought are random, you can not control them, that is the point. Thoughts have no memory. |

maybe thats where we go wrong gambling ,we imagine Liverpool winning and we place a bet on them ,now if we had thought about IT first we would have backed THE GUNNERS

but my question is who supplies the random thoughts?
|
|
By:
what part of the brain gives us the random thoughts?
|
|
By:
Please, it's a very serious subject.
Who are we,where do we come from, how do we have a conscience. How can we not control our thoughts. You have a brain but that is not your mind, they are separate. |
|
By:
Brass, its the big unanswered question............
Is there a God.......... |
|
By:
well when i told you to think of being a little boy and santa came with the presents i bet you thought about something else connected to that same day, which means thoughts or memories that are stored in the brain are stored side by side if connected to each other.and one memory will prompt an other connected memory.so the brain must have a file system.

THOUGHTS ARE RANDOM CANT BE CONTROLLED
Please try to understand, what you describe is association which is totally different and not random.. What is stored in the brain is not of the mind(thoughts)because they are not the same. Do you understand what a mind is, i'm not being funny, think about it by using that brain..... |

"THOUGHTS ARE RANDOM CANT BE CONTROLLED"
There are a religion or two who believe they, with enough skill, can. Yours, Just Buddhism. |

How can you separate the mind and the brain? They are one.
Just because our (tiny) minds can't yet properly distinguish how the two are interlinked, it doesn't lessen the fact. We feel special and different to other animals, but most of us follow our genetic predisposition quite happily. |

Your subconscious mind does all the work passing information to our so called conscious mind the conscious mind does very little, it just thinks it does

This a very interesting topic.... Thoughts are not a conscious thing. We can choose to accept them or dismiss them. Choosing them is a conscious decision that leads to ideas and then actions. The common conception seems to be that thinking and thoughts are the very genesis chamber of decision making. However as you point out, thoughts have no authorship built in, they simply arise. However, things start to get tricky with your next assertion, “we choose to accept or dismiss them… choosing them is a conscious decision…” . The problem here is that choice is just another process seated on the physical, that is to say, the weighting and grading of competing influences and indeed which of them wins out in the end. “Choice” like any process is subject to physical law. If we accept coherent science then “choice” can only ever be deterministic and inevitable. Our consciousness of the phenomenon of “choosing” is actually an illusion. |

Good stuff. I will ask you how we arrive at actions.... How do we reject certain thoughts.. I was with you up to 'illusion' but i do get the point but am sensing some contradiction.. We can't see illusion... |

How can you separate the mind and the brain? They are one. No, i must disagree,we all have character, traits, intuition, which make us I,different from each other, irrespective of brain.. The brain computes, the mind is something different....... |

ok,if you put 2 month old baby in a swimming pool ,how does it know how to swim, but they do swim,so something commanded the baby to swim,so some power or natural instinct is controlling the baby.

Good stuff. I will ask you how we arrive at actions.... How do we reject certain thoughts.. I was with you up to 'illusion' but i do get the point but am sensing some contradiction.. We can't see illusion... Well, I think we all go out into the world and act as if we are making choices, as if we have freewill. (Freewill in the organizing principle of society, could have acted otherwise sense of the word, not in the compatibilist, semantic jiggery pokery sense.) But that sense, whilst incredibly strong isn’t enough to negate the knowledge that whilst the concept of choice absolutely exists, ultimately I recognize it is as an incoherence, as an illusion. So yes I would say that I do “see” it as such. Thoughts, choices and subsequent actions, have to be seated within the causal chain (competing influences). They all have a cause and prior to that an antecedent cause, all the way back down the line (unless of course you venture into the realm of quantum indeterminacy but even that isn’t going to help at the macro level) That has to be axiomatic. There can be no such thing as a thought, choice or action that is uncaused. That would be nonsensical. Once we get into the realm of I could have acted otherwise then we disavow causality, coherence and logic. Although I recognize In terms of perpetuating a functioning, healthy society, that might be necessary. But that’s another question. ![]() |
