Peterborough By-Election: Police Investigate Five Fraud Allegations

Police are investigating five allegations of electoral fraud during the Peterborough by-election, which The Brexit Party lost to Labour by a narrow margin of fewer than 700 votes.
Cambridgeshire Police have confirmed that one allegation relates to bribery and corruption, three to postal vote fraud, and one breach of privacy of votes.

According to the Peterborough Telegraph  one investigation involves “a message shared on social media allegedly showing someone bragging that he and two others had ‘burned more than 1,000 votes for the Brexit Party’”.

There are also questions surrounding a Labour activist Tariq Mahmood who was jailed in 2008 for postal vote interference.

The Peterborough Telegraph reports that Mahmood was pictured during the campaign with both Labour candidate Lisa Forbes and Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn — and was also present at the election count.

But it adds that Labour denies any wrongdoing.

However, Labour has categorically denied that Mr Mahmood had any involvement in the campaign, with a spokesman saying: “Peterborough council, who organises the count, always announce the results in a public area of the venue. There were hundreds of people there. The Labour Party had 19 official guests who were allowed into the restricted areas. He was not one of them.”

Voting in Labour's Peterborough by-election win was 'like corrupt Kazakhstan', observers warn as police probe five cases of 'malpractice'

by BRENDAN CARLIN and ROSS SLATER FOR THE MAIL ON SUNDAY

PUBLISHED: 23:03, 15 June 2019 | UPDATED: 08:55, 16 June 2019

Voting practices in the Peterborough by-election won by Labour were worthy of corrupt ex-Soviet state Kazakhstan, independent observers warned last night.

They said the sight of people photographing their completed ballot papers was something they had only ever seen in Kazakhstan ‘many years ago’.

The oil-rich state has until recently had only one president since it broke with the Soviet Union in 1991, with claims that even last Sunday’s election was ****.

Labour’s victory by just 683 votes over the Brexit Party in Peterborough was mired in controversy last week after The Mail on Sunday revealed claims that a convicted vote rigger was at the centre of the party’s campaign. Cambridgeshire Police have since revealed they are investigating five complaints of electoral malpractice, including bribery. Now election experts Democracy Volunteers have raised fresh concerns over the by-election.

John Ault, director of the organisation, said he had seen people photographing their completed ballot papers in what he suggested could show they were fulfilling a ‘contract’ to prove how they had voted.

He told The Mail on Sunday: ‘I have observed many elections across Europe and only once in Kazakhstan many years ago did I see what I saw happen three times in Peterborough.

‘There are signs up warning you not to take photographs and these were not selfies celebrating having voted but people photographing their cross on the ballot paper.’

Yes, there is a lot to be said for simply backing the complete outsider if it's considered that the result is going to be close. No one knows the result, they can guess, they can bet according to how they want the result to be or their perception of what it should be but nobody at all knows the result until the official announcement.

Regarding photographing ballot papers- this is standard practice in Conservative election of new leader by mps.

I think it's fairer to say that the favourite flip flopped many times during the campaign, as it should in a very close contest.

No doubt opinion polls being so wrong have provided betting opportunities.

Regarding opinion polls on the results Donny suggested earlier-

Peterborough- no opinion polls but one excellent site (electoral calculus) had Labour ahead.

Clinton-Trump- Clinton always just in front but not by a great deal.

Remain-Leave- Too close to call in opinion polls with perhaps remain slightly ahead by a whisker.

some closed polls had trump ahead, based on intent to vote combined
with voting intention.

our friend ron russian highlited these, and they were proved correct..

it made sense that the motivation to vote for obama may not be replicated
to vote for hilary, and many polls overlooked that.

Polling includes media predictions and support. It all affects perception and confidence behind a candidate.

This from Wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newspaper_endorsements_in_the_2016_United_States_presidential_election

500 hundred US newspapers and magazines endorsed Clinton.
28 endorsed Trump.

Not only was Trump a victory against career politicians, it was also a win versus the print media. Quite staggering when you think about it.

And of course the print media are simply publishing what their agenda is, they are best completely ignored from a betting viewpoint.

print media didn't win but they didn't really lose here of course, because Trump is a huge money maker for them

Had a look at the Daily Newspaper list;

You had *20* of that very long list endorse Romney and then endorse right-wing again (including some weirdo papers who decided to endorse Libertarian). One might see that as liberal bias or you could just as easily see it as many in charge don't believe their power will be challenged by a Hillary-led presidency. Biden will probably rack up all the endorsements if he wins but this list is gonna be far more split if Bernie did for example

I may be biased, probably the biggest Biden hater in all the Trump thread Grin

realistically, I'm not sure it does. I think his status as the front runner and the one considered most likely to beat Trump is going to drill many into the mindset of "We must vote Trump to beat this guy at all costs".

Ideally, he gets exposed as being out of touch in the debates in a couple of weeks. It's a shame that Warren is stranded in the other one and doesn't get to have a go at him but hopefully the other contenders (Bernie, Kamala, Pete B) get to strike some blows. There is so much that should be damaging to him that should see him lose a lot of support from the more left types and those who prioritise social issues. There's also all that creepy **** he does, which should be called out.

Of course, Biden is going to cure cancer if he wins so you have to keep that in mind
