Macron announces fund starting tomorrow for rebuild. Surely not needed when all the Vatican has to do is organise  a car boot for 10 minutes?

that will go down well with the yellow vests.... a shake the tin fund for some old building whilst families are expected to work for buttons....

place was falling apart last year anyway. Macron is only using this as a distraction. He'll milk it for all its worth

Yes lets see if they blame the Yellow Vests.

Francois-Henry Pinault and President Macron are so shocked at the destruction of one of France's most iconic cultural symbols that within hours they have pledged millions of pounds towards it's repair and yet the latter seems totally unconcerned by the destruction of French culture per se

laughable, if the catholic church don't pay for the restoration. More dosh flows through it's coffers than 10 Arab Kings

Glad I'm not the only one with a suspicious mind.

The rich pledge millions before the site is cold.

Renovation was ocurring meaning some valuables had been previously removed. All other artifacts have apparently been saved.

The Spire was built in the 1860s so hardly ancient.

Macron comes out weeping drawing sympathy and probably ending the yellow vests protest.

Tusk wastes no time in making political gain:

"You will also rebuild your cathedral," he said, asking all 28 EU countries to help in that effort. "The burning of the Notre Dame cathedral has again made us aware that we are bound by something more important and more profound than treaties. Today, we understand better the essence of that, which is common, we know how much we can lose. And that we want to defend it – together."

Theresa will no doubt be laying flowers by Good Friday..

Less than a month before the burning of Notre Dame, 'Newsweek' reported that Catholic Churches have been vandalised across France.

Precisely no-one will be surprised to learn that many people who don't have French names are openly celebrating the destruction of the magnificent Notre Dame.

If the contractors are to blame won't their insurance cover it? I'm not sure I'd be offering any dosh until after an investigation and an insurance claim.

Very odd.

From alun's newsweek link:

Last Sunday, the historic Church of St. Sulpice in Paris was set on fire just after midday mass on Sunday,  Le Parisien reported, although no one was injured. Police are still investigating the attack, which firefighters have confidently attributed to arson.

I'm wondering whether the Parisian Plod will be joining the dots, given that there have been umpteen attacks on Catholic churches in France?  (Plus of course the 2016 cowardly murder of the 84 year old priest in a Rouen church).

By now, their Met cousins across the Channel would surely have brought in the Fortune Telling Squad, complete with their crystal b@lls, and pronounced that the conflagration was started by a person with 'Mental Health' issues.

If there is evidence to suggest arson (a number of churches and synagogues in France have been the subject of arson attacks in recent months) this information may be suppressed for the greater benefit of the state .

The average tree surgeon's public liability and pro indemnity insurance can cover up to and beyond £10m.

He will have to fulfil various safety obligations to qualify if a claim is made. Contractors working on the Notre Dame would be insured for 20 times that and would need 24 hour security.

The insurer would of course split the liability with other companies once all H&S requirements are met.

Why anyone rich or poor would donate to this is beyond me.

Damage inside isn't nearly as bad as I'd thought it would be Excited. I'd forgotten it might have (and did have) a stone vaulted ceiling between the inside and the roof area. With a quick visit to "base de la maison" and some YTS joiners, they'll soon have it all fixed up in time for the second coming, the rapture, judgement day, Brexit, whichever comes first. (and my money's not on the latter).
