I think most people accept that you can't eradicate inequality in any society, let alone a capitalist one. In fact, I'd say most people don't even think it's desirable.

Read Moneyland and realise it's all completely f*cked. Capitalism has allowed vast national wealth to be transferred into the hands of a small number of people who now have it buried away under trusts and shell companies. There'll always be some corrupt official or regime who'll hide them so you can never catch up.

Do they really mean that we need to get rid of inequality or do they mean that there needs to be some redistribution of wealth and income to narrow the gap?

what leaves me aghast is that people do not understand how it is - unless there was a revolution it will be the same and people will just tell a pack of lies about life in a capitalist society - suck it up  - most of you HAVE to be the ants to make it work

Mandeville said Bees

Not everyone is 'equal' and there is no appetite to artificially create it as the self is all that concerns humans.
Though there are a myriad of economic lies that are told that manipulate the opinions of folk.
One being that productivity is beneficial to all as it 'floats all boats'. Well some people got an inside toilet out of huge national borrowing, congratulations....but its those same people who then have the carpet pulled away when that debt needs servicing, so swings and roundabouts.
There is no doubt the yachts float better than all others.

nellie - true equality is obviously unattainable but you can obviously make things more equal than they are. More likely than not though these are just the usual empty promises they like to make. You have to go back to the early days of Blair to get anything remotely like a genuine attempt to level the playing field.

Let's start with betfair. No matter how much research you do, your careful staking plan, your perfectly chosens bets, your trading strategy, no matter how many hours you put into it and how much you risk, we all win the same and the guy who just chucks a tenner at a random market as he feels lucky, we all win the same. Fair?

They should use the PC to give the random guy a rebate. Would give us the chance to win it back off him.

Capitalism has pulled most of the world out of poverty.

That is a simple fact. You may choose not to believe it but that does not change facts.

Politicians work on soundbites.

Remove inequality
Spend more on the NHS
Build houses
End discrimination
Give all kids the same opportunity

It's all very nice but it's just way of getting votes. There will always be someone living in a mansion who plays golf every day and someone else living in a studio flat and works down a sewer.

Well communism removed inequality...it proved a disaster

If everybody gets the same we remove incentive, worse still communism had to bring in very repressive

laws to remove any initiative at all.

Economies have to be Capitalist, but it must be humane Capitalism, we must ensure those who at the

bottom of society for whatever reason are guaranteed a certain standard of living.

In this socialism does well, although it is a very fine line.

We have a two party system with a right and left orientated parties, which most countries do.

If we move too far to the right, people can vote in the left, or if we move too far to the left people can

vote in the right.

It is a good a compromise as any, and we can only ever have a compromise, extremes are bad

just my own opinion

The problem with most societies they are too big most people become a small cog in a big machine.
For thousands of years mankind as traded with one another in various forms of capitalism we have basically had to have relied each other, the problem with this is where there is a winner then there must  be loser, in a  world obsessed by cost that means one way or another most people are losers and a very small number of people are winners.
Things are changing and they are changing fast AI and greater automation are going to transform the way we live, now this can be in a good way or it can be in a bad way, it’s your choice which path you choose.
If you choose to live under a capitol system then chances are your livelihood will be decimated by the change, you will become a modern day Oliver Twist.
But there is an alternative way of life that even now is quietly evolving, small groups and communities around the world that are going self sufficient, what I mean by this is they have some land and they use modern methods of farming and they produce their own power and they also have bought enough scrap metal and old pieces of tech in order to make and remake their own goods and items, 3d printers cnc machines and robotic methods.
The Beauty of this way of life is people are no long constantly replenishing commodities then looking for buyer for the finished goods. But the main positive feature of this way of life is the protection from outside world or national events.
These people are not cutting themselves off entirely they will still share and exchange ideas with the rest of mankind.

One way that is already happening apparently is to change the tax rules so that the most wealthy emigrate. This has always been effective and it is increasing inequality in Portugal which is inviting the mega rich to move with no tax on their foreign earnings.

It is also true that if you started 100 people on the same salary on the same day with no savings, by the end of 5 years one or two would be millionaires while a few would be bankrupt. Income the same, spending and saving different. You could argue that allowances before tax such as the tax free income allowance, £1000 a year of tax free interest as well as tax free ISAs etc. is increasing inequality but with present interest rates it makes very little difference. The main qualification for becoming a millionaire is to want to be one.

There must be some other qualifications sageform?….I want to be a millionaire but I am not one.

I would a nice new BMW conditor, I hope BMW see money as imagination and let me have one for nothing.

Do you think people people would be happy with just a fire and catching, when they see people living in

luxury houses with all mod cons...that would surpise me?

Yes we must have competition I can see that, but also fairness, unfortunately these rather contradict each

other.

Still I was a member of the communist party when I was young....I have come a little to the right since then.

Why on earth would anyone want to get rid of Inequality ?

Inequality is perfectly normal, natural, healthy and desirable. Long may it continue. Ideally without morons throwing lots of taxpayers money to try and reduce it.

Things that don't have a solution always make for a great political tool. Hence you see the politicians talking about removing inequality most of the times.

I thought like you when I was younger Conditor.

But not now. Since 1980 I have seen our society grow into a money grabbing monster.

The only way we can ignore this, is by being vey rich ourselves.

I was brought down by the cruelty of others, so I lost everything I had.

I have no way of getting it back, but in todays MONEY is king

todays society

I find those that praise inequality alan2005 are those at the top, not the bottomLaugh

Still it is part of our human nature we are all greedy at heart, and all want something for nothing.

I watch Ben Fogle's 'New Lives in the Wild' people who try to escape the rat race.

But I think they all have a little something stashed away somewhereLaugh
