Murray takes the third set to trail 1-2

ooops, 6-6 in the fourth …

All of this is just reinforcing my point. You guys are having such a hard time justifying your greatest ever sportsman! And interestingly I haven't heard any contender for the second greatest either. The only debate here is whether Murray is the greatest or whether Darts is a sport or not(soe have attempted to shed some light on how hard it is to play Tennis).
By:
But the guy who said to me 'but you conveniently ignore that Murray has won a Davis cup medal as well' takes the biscuit.
By:
It's two sets all now though.
C'mon Andy ![]() Lol DT, the only hard times I have are with my woman ![]() |
By:
I'm not good at understanding these one-liners. Are you saying you get hard when with your woman? or you have a hard time getting hard when with your woman? Hope my question makes sense.

Some Spanish dude choking in the first round

Go Andy !!

I've always thought Tony McCoy was the greatest British Sportsman ever and still do, but Murray is such a talent and inspiration as a fighter.
Of course he's not going to win the Aussie Open and he knows it, but that's not stopping him putting it all on the line in a first round match against a guy he'd have demolished in his pomp, pain and everything. |

Gawn !!!

By:
Think he’s finished
By:
dustys back !!
By:
I put the bbc news on and they were fawning over him in the usual nauseating way so I put the game of tennis on just to see if he cried yet again....but fair play he held it together.
Unless he does the unthinkable and plays Wimbledon simply on a wildcard to suck up more twee middle class fawning, that’s the last of Murray and his mother. ![]() |
By:
even if he'd been fully fit & pain free then lack of matches would still have made RBA warm fav so that was a pretty remarkable to take it to a decider
By:
i wonder if he might play a bit of doubles???

I think to even be in the argument to be the greatest British sportsman, you would have to be in the mix for GOAT in your individual sports. Murray would be lucky to get a mention in a top 20 of male tennis players and so, in my view, is a mile off.
As previously mentioned, Redgrave is the obvious choice. But others ahead of him would include Froome, Daley Thompson, Farah, even Hendry and Taylor. The argument that he has been unlucky to be around at the same time as the three greatest ever players is nonsense and recency bias of the highest order. What are the chances, in any sport, of the three greatest of all time all being around at the same time? The fact that they've been beating each other for a decade pretty much precludes them from the dominance that is required to be considered the GOAT. Despite all that, I doubt many outside of the UK would consider Murray to be part of some kind of 'Big Four' his achievements are way behind theirs. A top class player of a minority sport and undoubtedly the best British player of the 50 years that's about it. |
By:
If tennis is less of a minority sport than nearly every other.
Rowing is as minority as they come futher divided by the number of different events and medals. If a rower thinks that the competition is too hot in a particular event he can just avoid the challange by changing boats. If the number of medals per sport was decided on that sports popularity there would have to be over a 100 tennis gold medals for it to be on a par with rowing. Froome is a good choice--Cycling is a World wide sport with one event head and shoulders above all others in importance. |
By:
Hoy beats Froome, tho.
By:
Surely, some of the cycling events are team events.

If you can consider John McEnroe a tennis great , then you can consider Murray to be one also
There are many similarities in both players game and yes McEnroe won more majors but at his peak had perhaps one or two main rivals , Borg of course , and Lendil a little later ? Connors was already past his peak when McEnroe was at his very best But Murray has had perhaps the greatest player of all time ( although not for me ) and Nadal and Dyork.. And all playing pretty much at exactly the same time |
By:
I recall early in Murrys career McEnroe said he thought he would and should win majors
By:
When you look at it Murry must be in with a chance of being considered the greatest British sportsman , there are quite a few others such as Seb Coe with all those world records and 2 gold and 2 silver Olympic medals etc , you could name a case for quite a few more
But Murrys there or very close |
By:
greatest british sportsman of all time is Eric Liddell. so good they made a film about him.
i don't think he would have liked me much but i have major respect for his extraordinary life. |
By:
In that case, Murray won't be the greatest Scottish player, let alone greatest British.
By:
why would you not consider McEnroe a tennis great lfc he certainly is.
funny you say Connor's was past his peak yet he won 3 of his 8 slams when over 30 plus made 3 french open finals. jimmy at the french was a bit like murray in australia. lots of finals just couldn't get the win |
By:
By:
Oh yes I do consider McEnroe a tennis great , to my mind the greatest
By:
By:
you wrote player so i assumed. he was a rugby player, several caps for Scotland.
By:
Chris Froome is purely a stamina based fitness athlete, it can't be compared to a skill sport like Tennis, the likes of Froome have succeded in large parts thanks to the huge amounts of money Sky have invested, other riders and teams are handicapped, it's a bit like F1, Hamilton is a a top driver but he mostly competes against hopeless back markers in poorer financed teams. Then there are question marks over Froome who many believe to have been doping, another Cyclists who suffers from Asthma and gets to use TUE's.
Think sportsman from skill sports and those from endurance sports should be seperated. |
By:
...which again brings me to my original point. If you have to divide the sports into categories, and make other similar excuses to help Murray claim the greatest title, surely he can't be the greatest?
By:
For instance if Fed, Nadal or Djokovic were Britsh, we wouldn't be debating if darts is a sports or not, if skill sports should be separated from endurance sports, etc etc.
By:
Also, let's not forget it was BBC that started this a few days ago.
Judging from this forum, almost everything BBC says falls under some peculiar agenda and nonsense but for some reason you all took this seriously ![]() ![]() |
By:
it is a pointless exercise. how do compare a darts thrower to a boxer or a runner to a snooker player?
they are good at what they do and all require different but often similar attributes |
By:
Isnt all that matters now the fact that Kyle Edmund is Scottish number 1 tennis player?
Now we shall see how strong this Scottish affinity to the game of tennis is ![]() The way the Scots go off about andy you'd think any of em ever played the fookin game. |
By:
Be another game they dont play....

kyle Edmund is fae Yorkshire insn't he? Cam Norrie is a Scot, he lost too
