A bit late for me but in the 80's the kids could wash all the sugary goodness down with a bottle of the mildy racist fruit drink Umbongo.

Was in Warwick last week and saw those liquorice sticks with the flat bit at the end, haven't seen them in London for years.
Could chew them for hours and end up with a black sticky gungy corner of your mouth. |

Googled it and just as I remember it. spanish gold sweet coconut tobacco" Cor blimey, remember that in the corner shop across the road, the stuff was so sweet, very sugary ! A bit too sweet for my taste. I think it was also called pirates treasure or pirates gold (?) But yeah, Spanish Gold Sweet Coconut Tobacco in the red wrappers and sort-of a waxy feel to the wrapping. Haven't seen the stuff for years but went in an old sweet shop this year and they had it. |

Slippy, you're local to me, I'm in Beckenham.
There's a branch of Mr Simms Olde Sweete Shoppe in the high street which does some of these. Also one in Bromley. |

I still go to Beckenham quite often lovegod, I used to live in The Avenue and played hockey and cricket for the local club back in the day. I usually drink in The George on the High Street and bet in Paddy's opposite the cinema to do my placepots. I don't actually eat sweets or any form of desserts anymore and haven't done so for about 35 years! I'm a cheese and biccies man these days. I've always liked Beckenham, it used to be The Three Tuns every Friday night and Lautrec's by the station afterwards, seems like another lifetime ago now thinking about it but good memories.

Mars bars were double that and i think and the cheapest was the freddo bar ... black jacks and refresher chews if you were really scraping about under the sofa for pennies

Liquirice wheels were good value ..they went on forever , the hard gums were good in that you could get good chewing time

Oliver Twist chocolate bars - Really good quality chocolate bar made by Terrys. Discontinued in late sixties but re-introduced years later but not the same.
Fullers Truffles - Fullers produced this chocolate bar which came in a package of two bars and had a magenta coloured wrapper. The chocolate was of finest quality and very few confectioners stocked this bar. Unfortunately Fullers of Kilmarnock went out of business in the early 1970'. They also produced other bars including a marzipan bar but it was the truffle bar that was the best chocolate ever (well to me anyway). |

I also remember though not with fondness those little purple tablet like sweets.....horrible things they were. Galaxy back in the day was outstanding chocolate, tastes nowhere near as good now.
