Liquorice root is still around. I sell it.
The stuff I have is in boxes of 10 and comes from Italy

spangles - fruit flavours but fav was old english which was mix of aniseed, butterscotch & cinnamon type flavours.
also seem to remember a coconut type thing that came in a pouch & was meant to resemble a pouch of rolling tobacco.
can't think why they don't still sell that

We used to buy sweet Cigarettes to copy grown ups, they had a red end to look like they were lit. Them old English spangles were rank imo.

Those spangles were just weird,what flavour were the diarrhoea coloured ones vomit.Remember the sweet tobacco you could buyin a little pouch as well,looked like the real thing as well when you were I kid..

Munchies - the millionaire's chocolate of choice.

Those big penny chews that were half one flavour and half another.
I used to get 2/6d a week pocket money and would go straight down
the local shop and buy 30 to last me the week.
Probably the reason i've got none of my own teeth now.

Yes crystalhunt....the fun bit was spitting it out, onto everything we shouldn't be spitting it out onto.....

Don't know what these were called, but they were small plastic sachets, filled with delicious thick syrup,
in different flavours, that we sucked out after biting of the tops......

One shop, on the way to school, sold "Penny Spuds" that were just icing sugar dipped in cocoa.
Never saw them anywhere else, so guessing the shopkeeper made them.

Dairy Maid Toffees - chocolate caramels with foil wrappers with a picture of a milkmaid on it.
Cadburys Dairy Milk in penny and tuppeny bars - little thin version of the thicker sixpenny bar.

the bar you might be  on about wasn't a mars,topic,aztec,picnic etc but might have been more like a biscuit ,tunnocks caramel wafer type,smaller than most with a chocy biscuit, chewy toffee texture,taste to it but for the liofe of me cant think of its name,more the size of a finger of fudge

Anybody remember Lucky Bags ?

Were they the same as Jamboree bags? Few sweets and a plastic toy of some sort?

If you were lucky at Christmas you would receive a Chocolate Smokers Outfit.  Consisting of cigarettes, cigars, pipe and ashtray all wrapped in gold foil.  Everything the junior smoker could wish for.

Jamboree Bags had a scout and a tent on the front of the packet.  They were 3d, I think.

I seem to connect lucky bags with sweet sugar covered peanuts

A bit late for me but in the 80's the kids could wash all the sugary goodness down with a bottle of the mildy racist fruit drink Umbongo.

Was in Warwick last week and saw those liquorice sticks with the flat bit at the end, haven't seen them in London for years.

Could chew them for hours and end up with a black sticky gungy corner of your mouth.

Cor blimey, remember that in the corner shop across the road, the stuff was so sweet, very sugary ! A bit too sweet for my taste. I think it was also called pirates treasure or pirates gold (?) But yeah, Spanish Gold Sweet Coconut Tobacco in the red wrappers and sort-of a waxy feel to the wrapping. Haven't seen the stuff for years but went in an old sweet shop this year and they had it.

Slippy, you're local to me, I'm in Beckenham.

There's a branch of Mr Simms Olde Sweete Shoppe in the high street which does some of these. Also one in Bromley.

I still go to Beckenham quite often lovegod, I used to live in The Avenue and played hockey and cricket for the local club back in the day. I usually drink in The George on the High Street and bet in Paddy's opposite the cinema to do my placepots. I don't actually eat sweets or any form of desserts anymore and haven't done so for about 35 years! I'm a cheese and biccies man these days. I've always liked Beckenham, it used to be The Three Tuns every Friday night and Lautrec's by the station afterwards, seems like another lifetime ago now thinking about it but good memories.

someone mentioned old jamaica  ..that's the one your parents bought because they were more expensive ..the others mentioned were like 10p or less

Mars bars were double  that and i think and the cheapest was the freddo bar  ... black jacks and refresher chews  if you were  really scraping about  under the sofa for pennies

Liquirice wheels were good value  ..they went on forever  , the hard gums were good in that you could get good chewing time

Oliver Twist chocolate bars - Really good quality chocolate bar made by Terrys. Discontinued in late sixties but re-introduced years later but not the same.
Fullers Truffles - Fullers produced this chocolate bar which came in a package of two bars and had a magenta coloured wrapper. The chocolate was of finest quality and very few confectioners stocked this bar. Unfortunately Fullers of Kilmarnock went out of business in the early 1970'. They also produced other bars including a marzipan bar but it was the truffle bar that was the best chocolate ever (well to me anyway).
