It's not Gatlin's fault that the Athletics authorities don't have the guts to ban cheats for life, they are the inept clowns who should be booed.
Aside from that it was a magnificent race , I can't recall anybody starting like Coleman for a very long time. And another surreal womens 10,000 metres following the Rio race . If a sporting film showed a woman nearly 300 metres clear of the silver medal ,it would be described as being out of touch with reality. |

re. Gatlin - there's a list of 30+ competitors going round on twitter, who are taking part having previously served bans. Most you won't know, but other than Gatlin, they include:-
Blake (100m - widely cheered) Manyonga (won the long jump last night, didn't get a single boo from anyone) Perkovic (will win the women's discus; won't get booed) LaShawn Merritt (400m - ditto) Dawn Harper Nelson (100m hurdles - ditto) Montsho (400m - ran earlier, applause when introduced) I'm no fan of Gatlin, but the public will happily lap up the pantomime villain tag whilst being in total ignorance of what they're watching. I can understand why Gatlin might feel a bit victimised. His first ban was for a very technical infringement which the authorities officially stated was entirely accidental with no intention to cheat. Makes him no worse really than those on the list above. |
