![]() ![]() ![]() In honor of South African politician Nelson Mandela and to mark the 50th anniversary of his arrest by the apartheid police, artist Marco Cianfanelli was commissioned to produce a sculpture to stand in Howick, South Africa, on the exact unassuming spot that he was captured. The installation consists of 50 steel columns which symbolise the prison bars that held him for 27 years. When viewed from the right angle, the quietly powerful sculpture forms a profile portrait of Mandela. ![]() ![]() These are called blackout panels. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Underground Town: Coober Pedy, Australia The town of Coober Pedy still exists and is home to more than 1,600 residents. This archipelago at the bottom of the world is a British Overseas Territory and has the distinction of being the remotest inhabited island on Earth. Located in the South Atlantic, the archipelago is adrift in the middle of the ocean, 1,750 miles from South Africa and 2,088 miles from South America. Tristan is the only island where people live (with a population of about 260) – Nightingale Island, Inaccessible Island and Gough Island are all uninhabited wildlife reserves, says the Tristan da Cunha website. Visitors willing to make the long trek down to the island can see the rockhopper penguins that adorn the islands’ shores, as well as the endangered spectacled petrel and the fur seals that roll from rocky shore into the Atlantic Ocean, says Pew Environment News. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Cité Musicale de l'Ile Seguin in Paris In the words of the architects Shigeru Ban and Jean de Gastines: At the “prow” of the island of Seguin, the Cité Musicale solves the paradox of remaining in perfect continuity with the urban planning project of Jean Nouvel, while at the same time constituting a signal, an emblem of the culture of Hauts-de-Seine. On the downstream end, the foundation is inclined, and allows a nest of woven wood with rounded shapes to emerge. This detaches itself from the general silhouette of the island and affirms its presence. It announces the specificity of a prestigious public and cultural program: at the interior one notices the iridescent hull of the auditorium and the activity of its foyers. To the sides, a silver sail protects it from direct sunlight. This photovoltaic solar sail is always in movement, orienting itself following the course of the sun and permitting optimal energy production. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Kampung Pelangi: a village in Indonesia made out of rainbows ![]() ![]() |

On the island of Heimaey, there is a rock formation that, from certain angles, looks like a massive elephant taking a drink out of the Atlantic ocean. Two key elements contribute to this playful illusion. Firstly, the “wrinkles” in the cliff mimic an elephant’s leathery skin—this particular texture was formed by basalt rock, a type of material that results from the rapid cooling of thick lava. Coupled with indentations that look like an eye and a giant, floppy ear, it’s almost as if this is an elephant that’s hiding in plain sight |

No, it’s not the first sign of the apocalypse. The seriously creepy dolls, who were spotted playing with a toy train set at Hamleys and pushing an empty antique pram along Tube platforms, were actually promoting Derren Brown’s new psychological theme park ride, coming to Thorpe Park next year. ![]() The new 8ft statue of King Arthur on the top of Tintagel cliffs ![]() ![]() ![]() Sagrada Familia - Barcelona (by Fred PO) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Litlanesfoss, Iceland |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Palimpsests Spaces In the Middle Ages, parchment being expensive, copyists reused ancient manuscripts to enroll new texts. For this, the old manuscripts were erased beforehand with pumice stone. The result of this practice is called palimpsest. That is why sometimes (thanks to ultra-violet radiation) we rediscover texts hidden behind psalms or gospels. The places Patrick Baillet photographs are successive reappropriation of spaces, deletes, overlays, fields of symbolic battles, abandoned to the most extreme expressions. In the midst of this urban brutality Patrick Baillet likes to bring back, as in the example of the palimpsest, the memory of a sophisticated culture and nostalgia for a lost refinement. ![]() Mermaid Street, Rye / England (by Sam Moore). ![]() Ljubljana - Slovenia (by Tom Mrazek) |
