Dear Phyllis, I will attempt to reply to your question as simply as I can. Here is my answer: Scientists believe that every occurrence, including the affairs of human beings, is due to the laws of nature. Therefore a scientist cannot be inclined to believe that the course of events can be influenced by prayer, that is, by a supernaturally manifested wish. However, we must concede that our actual knowledge of these forces is imperfect, so that in the end the belief in the existence of a final, ultimate spirit rests on a kind of faith. Such belief remains widespread even with the current achievements in science. But also, everyone who is seriously involved in the pursuit of science becomes convinced that some spirit is manifest in the laws of the universe, one that is vastly superior to that of man. In this way the pursuit of science leads to a religious feeling of a special sort, which is surely quite different from the religiosity of someone more naive. With cordial greetings, your A. Einstein |

As I think I've said on her before, our purpose in life is to find a bottleneck and stand in it.

King Solomon wrote Ecclesiastes - he natters on about how rich he was, how many wives and concubines he had. How much gold and jewels he had. the abundance of food etc.
first nihilist that records the total waste of time life is ? Yet the conclusion of the book is that without God it is a waste. But with God life is worth living. What he really meant was ... he couldn't swim. Learn to swim young man, learn to swim. Meet Mike he swims like a fish. |

The belief in the Devine is just catnip for loons.
Peter bartholomew and men turned over a certain defeat while outnumbered and under siege at Antioch in 1099 during the first crusade. With their cause getting worse by the day he believed he had a vision which lead him and his men to dig for a day looking for what they believed to be a relic. (Quite why a Roman weapon used to torture the supposed son of God while on the cross is seen as a relic is beyond me) The fact they were looking meant that whatever they found would be odds on to be believed to be the relic. The believed they couldn't lose with the relic and went out to fight like banshees and pulled of an unbelievable victory. Peter then walked through fire to prove its authenticity and died a horrific death when it turned out to be a bit of scrap. Yet they still won? This alone is evidence that the power of the mind, in believing something to be righteous has an effect on the individuals involved who fought believing themselves to be protected by God. |

If a human is born disabled do we blame them for not being able to walk like others?
If somebody through no fault of their own are targeted by fraud and cheated are they lambasted? No, we show compassion because in both cases it's understandable and beyond the scope of the victim. Yet God creates the possibility of sin and when supposedly tricked in the process of leading an otherwise well meaning existence then blames them for not being able to decrypt successfully the cryptic puzzle that quite frankly today has more wrong info surrounding it than info of integrity. For such an omni present God who is magnificent enough to create everything he's rather touchy ain't he? |

dustybin's crusader story missed the point - the crusaders were brutal basturds under a curse. What curse? the curse of the sword. The Arab tribes are under that curse right now. Peter, put down the sword, those that live by the sword die by the sword. ISIS has a black flag with two white swords crossing over each other. Iraq - Crossed Swords Monument (“Hands of Victory”) The official name of “the Swords of Qadissiya”
before you went to war in the crusade you gave up your riches to the Knights Templar - they listed all your wealth and issued a promissory note that could be cashed in at the other end, in the Holy land. The knights Templar were not idiots. ninety percent of those that went to the holy land never got there. They died on the way. Disease and foreign dangers. This made them a very rich and powerful organization. The church soon tried to absorb them. In later years they took over the masonic organizations to escape the church and other principalities. They ruled through the east india company and when that was dissolved by Victoria for their over reaches, they went into the banking industry. If you want to cross swords you need to get financing from the banks. we fought a brutal war with Japan (now friends) Germany (now friends) our ally Russia is now our enemy. It's all set up to get people to lift a sword and murder their friends under the belief they are our enemies. The curse of the sword. CHRIST didn't say to be a christian you have to Bomb Iraq. Syria or any other nation. That's the other guys job. murder your brother and take his lands. You ascribe a lot of the world's mess to God, but God's pretty much left us alone(left us his word and asks for faith)It's man that does all he does. God's let us condemn ourselves. every evil is seen. the innocents that accept Christ will be redeemed and the trash will be dumped. the creator is waiting for the fullness of the gentiles to be completed. Real Justice lives in Christ. 2-2 |

While an interesting side story I'm afraid it was you zorro who missed the point.
Peter's story explains the fallacy of the leap of faith. The crusader's belief the piece of scrap was a relic made them pull off the unthinkable. They won the battle against all odds merely thinking the object was a relic, ordinarily they would have got trounced. Yet the relic was nothing. Hence the mind won the day. If we really wanted to be anal we could say God made the object a relic for a period to make them greater than they were but then took away its power after so as not to worship false idol. But all that does is show the conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism, which itself undermines that rather fanciful illusion. |

Religious Relics and religions are demonic. God(jesus)the spirit, did not come to make a club we can all join. We assemble in fellowship. WE the people are the church. Not the things and buildings and their caretakers. No object has power. Only faith in it has power. It's idolatry. God withdrew the sceptre from Moses that healed because they started worshipping the sceptre. God withdrew the Ark back to heaven. In revelation it's seen in heaven. Nobody kept the cup of Christ at the last supper (the grail) because they just put the cups in the wash basin and forgot them. Who would keep the cup? Insane. Men needed an excuse to make war and God is frequently used. George Bush invoked God to smite the Iraqis... FFS he walked like a monkey.. It just might be true and he's descended from one. Resources are what most wars are about. I do not believe they've fought 16 years in the middle east because they want the sand. or want to change hearts and minds.
the only relics here are people who believe that most wars are fought on religious grounds. LAND miss Tessmarker Land, they've stopped making it. |

Zorro you are totally missing my point.
If you say God didn't empower the object it simply proves my point further. The point is that the exceptional was achieved by those who believed the object to be significant, when the object wasn't. The pulled off an almighty victory when defeat was assured. The point is that they alone did something super human because of the belief they were justified and God had their backs, but as you suggest, he hadn't. Feelings invoked in them passion and people with passion put in more effort than those without. Feeling are just results of synapses and neurotransmitters reacting from dopamine and serotonin etc that provides the experience. When we believe an activity or thought to be righteous or virtuous this is the experience we have, it's not God it's chemicals. Diogenes said virtue said its own reward (i.e. You reward yourself) We actually know this is true by the brain activity under examination today. All of this explains what is experienced when people who want to believe receive an experience when they want to 'find' God. |
