That's wrong she did get enough votes.

It was the way they were distributed that beat her.

Noticed "the last leg" having a dig at her getting the msot votes but losing .. can't remember them complaining about the democratic deficit of UKIP getting a huge amount of votes for 1 MP?!

I actually used to fancy Chelsea Blush
But I also think she looks a bit like her dad, so I'd have to blot that thought out to avoid loosing more wood than a Brazilian rainforest.

Just Checking - you are right, but what is amusing about the US Result is that President Trump has almost certainly won because of the effect of the "electoral college" system.  A system he tweeted two days ago as a "disaster for democracy".   Some systems you win, some systems you loseWink.

TBH their electoral college think doesn't make any sense to me?
For our MPs breaking things up into areas DOES make sense, as they area representative, but for them .. why not just tally up all the votes for this one?

JC - If you really want to know the history and complexity of the electoral college system, you can look it up. I wouldn't recommend it at this time of nightWink.  Re the tally-up, I am not sure you mean what you say as your recommendation may result in a Clinton victory - there is still a good chance that she will get more (popular) votes than him.  In fact, he could be only the second President since the 1880's(?) to lose the popular votes and be elected. Guess the other one??

That's what I meant blackbarn, I wasn't being partisan. The votes are AFAIK just to elect the president, why not just add them up, why have intermediate grouping of votes in 2016 that distort it? I suppose it makes better entertainment but ...! I can only think it made sense 100 years ago.

it works because it is a system to find the president that best represents the country, not that represents the individual.

it is an attempt to find what the country wants, not what the individual wants.
democracy is not about the individual vote, this is what people don't understand about democracy.

lfc - I can entirely understand why you might want to justify this aged and unjustifiable system, but you do need to defend it in more detail even if just for my benefit.

we do not want New York and Los Angeles deciding the president, every time.

the president is there to represent the whole of the country, it is not really about the individual. it is very democratic.

now we have a lot of very rich and wealthy people in California and New York, I do not want them electing the president while the average working man in vast areas of the states never have a say.
By:

Its complicated, but in general it works very well.

America is a very big country, the American president must represent all of it.

Thanks lfc....Good stuff

So how is the system weighted to balance state vs individual?
Why is the system not the same for all states?
Is the process of candidates focussing on key "college" states conducive to good democracy?

Blackburn I`ll be honest, I haven't looked into it in that depth.
I took a quick glance at this thread and instinctively new the reasons I have given.

It's probably like oz. One seat may have more voters than another. Occasionally the losing party gets more overall voters but less seats.

If you disagree with the policy of simple tally across the nation, you are effectively saying that some citizens votes are worth more than others.

Hillary deserved to lose the election.  She is a pathological liar and a thoroughly despicable person.  The Clinton campaign, aided by the Obama administration, fought a scaremongering campaign with the desperate intent of protecting their wholly discredited legacy.

And they made sure the real President elect didn't become the Democratic nominee.
Bernie Sanders would have beaten  Trump.

I don't have too much interest in the American voting system but I would have thought the value of college votes is linked to the number in that area, which is essentially just the same, there maybe a few extra bits to it but I'd be surprised if votes had differing values on anything other than numbers.

All politician's careers are doomed to end in failure, because the system is flawed having to attempt to cater to selfishness over altruism.
It generally means a fractural element occurs where parties get voted in and out in cycles when they simple don't seem to cut it.
On this occasion the rednecks won out and a new tactic has been used under the veil of anti establishment; they voted in somebody who has no knowledge or experience Laugh
Talk about out of the frying pan.

It's either likely to be hilarious or very scary once he has to start playing his hand.

The Clinton campaign did cheat Bernie Sanders out of the nomination.  Whether he would have beaten Trump, who knows?

I lost all respect for him when he endorsed Clinton.

Pretty much anyone would have got elected ahead of Clinton (or Trump).

I was reminded of the phrase ABC (Anything But Chardonnay) as the answer when asked what wine you would like.

I though Anybody But Clinton.  I googled it and the phrase already exists.

Reminds me of when Homer was the football coach.

Homer Simpson - Steven I liked your hustle.

Steven smiles.

Homer - That's why it was so hard to cut you
