not at all. it seems quite likely that it's a completely normal consequence of the way our brains work.

Humans suppress areas of the brain used for analytical thinking and engage the parts responsible for empathy in order to believe in god, research suggests.

They do the opposite when thinking about the physical world, according to the study.

"When there's a question of faith, from the analytic point of view, it may seem absurd," said Professor Tony Jack, who led the research.

"But, from what we understand about the brain, the leap of faith to belief in the supernatural amounts to pushing aside the critical/analytical way of thinking to help us achieve greater social and emotional insight."

i think that might be true today, when everything is being challenged, but I reckon 100 to 200 years ago and back to the dawn of civilisation, the divine was a conclusion that could be rationalised in terms of what was considered rational at the time.

Our brains are innately wired to expect agents to drive all phenomena we observe. When there is no obvious agent, we invent one. And we tend to model these agents as things we already know, so people or animals (or hybrids like Ganesha) and then bestow them with superpowers to allow them to do things normal humans and animals can't.

The sheer diversity of religions across all ancient and modern cultures would suggest it's something we just can't help doing. There's plenty of research which suggests we're much happier with any old idea to explain something, rather than being in a permanent state of acknowledged ignorance.

Many people guess their way through life.

The only time they apply much logic to anything after they leave school is in their work, and that's because they have to.
We see perfectly rational people take partners who are totally unsuitable all the time.
Are they mentally ill as well?

It's not irrational to believe in God anyway.

It can't be proven that there isn't a God any more than it can be proven that there is one.

I think pets also fall into this category - I jus don't get how people fawn over a cat which if the person were mouse would be eaten after being toyed to death.. it's the soft option ..

It's the psycho / socio paths who largely seize on religion and manipulate the weak.

not so sure about that.

i would suggest it depends on the god.

the non-intervening life force of deism, perhaps not.

the god that's concerned about which parts of a man's penis need cutting off and which bits need to stay, and who's also intimately concerned about where men put their penises and what they do with them, as well as reading everyone's minds all the time and judging them?

Thor and Odin? Vishnu and Ganesha? Mormonism? Scientology?

pretttty pretttty pretttty irrational.

i like to think of myself as mentally challenged.

Dstyle mentions circumcision, it lessens the pleasure of sex.
some say it's more hygienic too? (not sure about that?)

Paul taught that those who accept circumcision are obliged to
keep the whole law, and those who want to be justified by the
law have cut themselves off from Christ (Galatians 5: 2-4).

the old testament is about LAW. man is constantly trying to justify
himself  through his deeds. Always falling short. daily sacrifices
in the temple, always a need to cleanse.
the new testament is about GRACE. the end of the man's sacrifices by
the sacrifice made by god. no more self justification needed. Just an
acceptance of that sacrifice.
no need to run to a church or a synagogue after you sin. to cleanse
yourself. no middle men needed. you are the priest.
call no man father. (Paul).
Jesus takes away past and future sins.

but society loves the law, loves to punish.
every night on the news you'll hear the word punish or punishment.
even in sport ?

I'd like to thank all here that no longer believe in God. As it
lines up with the great apostasy.. Jesus mentions this as one
of the signs of his return.

You can understand ancient man believing in weather gods etc simply because they didn't know how the planet worked. At some point some people were clever enough to organise religion as a means of keeping people in line. It can only continue by brainwashing children.

To me they've got psychological issues - not malevolent (but can be).

They just need something to believe in, to follow - be part of something.

And I can't understand why some of them have to wear identifying garb - vicars, mussies, jews etc etc.  But they want to be noticed, obviously.

But doctors, nurses, teachers, lawyers, accountants, electricians etc etc don't wear gear the shouts "look at me, I'm a plumber (or whatever)"

Many people find solace and comfort in the religion they follow. There's nothing wrong or ' mental ' about that.

That's too deep for a lot of people. So are the reasons for bringing a child up as a Christian.
Years ago many kids from very poor backgrounds were kept on the straight and narrow simply from attending Sunday school.
It teaches them Christian values, which also forms part of their character.
Then they always have a religion to refer to when making moral decisions.
Sending kids to Sunday school is bringing up kids to be decent the easy way.

It doesn't matter whether you genuinely believe in God or what's written in the bible.
The kids can make up their own minds about it when they old enough to. And by then the teachings of Christianity and the good work it does will have sunk in.

There's more to this mumbo jumbo than meets the eye.

I was brought up as a catholic, with priests, nuns, bishops and saints.
their 'brainwashing' never rubbed off on me? I hated all they peddled
back then. Atheism is the natural state. It's not god worship. At every
turn growing up religion looked like delusions on toast. But I changed my
opinion aged twenty five? So who 'brainwashed me' - many people are 'born
again' in later years - i no longer ally myself with Catholicism.
My reasons, to me seem logical. Israel is a nation once more, the San Hedrin
is once more in Israel after 1,950 years. the building of the third temple is
imminent. they have cut all the stones, made all the inner parts. the temple
can be built within a year. All this was prophecy to be found in a book in 1945..
after the jews were decimated. in 1945 Israel did not exist. It was delusional
to think it might ever exist.

Maybe 'mentally ill' is stretching it, but one thing is for sure, if someone today invented a religion they would be considered a nut job - see David Icke.

This is an interesting theory. I mean, why do you think they would be considered a but job now and not 2000 years ago when the apostles first starting preaching Christ? If you read Acts 2, you'll see that actually, many people in Jerusalem accused Peter of being drunk or insane while he was giving his sermon at Pentecost. This is not a new concept, its been getting said since the start of Christianity, and its not any more true now than it was then.
Its only easy to hold this opinion if your only experience of Chrisitanity is the betfiar forum but meet a few mature Christians and it becomes very obvious that its got no grounding. Amongst other things I know a Christian who was a senior radiographer in a cancer hospital, one who wrote a book on the merits of multiverse theory, numerous doctors, nurses, social workers etc. do you really think these people would be allowed to do their jobs if they were mentally ill? Do these seem to you like the type of people who are weak of mind?

There is a very strong evolutionary reason for the existence of religion. I get that. But I don't have to conform to it.
And there are lots of highly intelligent people who follow a religion. But they are still weak minded in that respect, or weak willed. Unable or unwilling (due to peer pressure, family pressure) to see the nonsense in religion.

for Fionavon,

Muhammad was a warlord, the Jews nicknamed him 'all ears' he would listen to the Jews with their one god and their stories which they told in the market places. A lot of those stories were adulterations of the old testament. Other stories came from Greek and other religions. a winged horse is obviously Pegasus from the Greek stories. circa 600 bc.

to frame this, you need some perspective. God and Satan. both are spiritual beings. we are spiritual beings in corrupting bodies(houses-jewish word).

the old testement started 5776? years ago (speed of light variable?)
it is as old as the Buddhist religion if not older? Islam is from 600 AD? pre-islam, it was a pagan moon gods religion, the prayed to the east, they kissed stones, they circled their sacred site - all the stuff they do now under another name. Muhammad killed thousands, captured and raped and died of poisoning(Jeremiah gave a warning to false prophets that they would die of poisoning? can't argue there).

Islam claims dubious affinity to the Jewish and christian religions. Jesus on the cross said 'it is done'. meaning he had fulfilled all of God's plan. the redemption of man was finished. No need for an arab warlord add on.

Who needs the false prophets, the other religions? the enemy. An angel appeared to Muhammad with the deception that gives power to the lies. who could that be? the greatest of all the angels. He sets up false religions as he is a spiritual enemy. He lays out his shell game and asks you to pick one. he's still churning out counterfeit religions.
there is one book that comes with prophecy - that can be tested.
the bible isn't just a collection of stories of brutal wars and sinning. It's a book about God's love for his bride. We are redeemed to be part of his family. Satan shook off his body(house) and was cast out. the saved are given new bodies(houses).

'In My Father's house there are many mansions. And if not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?'

Jesus is just the old testament fulfilled. He could have been mute and still fulfilled the function of being God's Sacrifice to end all sins. If someone claims Jesus as his saviour he does what Jacob did in his father's tent. He puts on the lamb's skin and receives his father's blessing. (you see these stories have a meaning if you investigate them).

fun fact - there are 11 trillion stars per person on earth,
the chinese word for boat combines the characters 'vessel' 'people' and 'eight'.
