They have changed the criteria on what is classed as a hate crime.

they're not hate crimes - just rage? gamma rays?
people are losing their patience - especially with overly polite people. |

It is simply impossible to have democracy without free speech,
any country that does not let its people speak about a particular subject has ceased to be a democracy UK Cops conduct manhunt for man who criticized Islam on a Bus British Police arrest citizens for criticizing Islam on social media |

Reporting of these crimes are up. That's very different thing from arrests, never mind convictions.
|

By:
Reporting is massively up (blame mobiles and social media)
and the definition of "crimes" (esp so-called hate crimes) has widened to ridiculous proportions. |

They are reporting what assistant chief constable said, are you saying it is false ?

By:
Porcupine you do realise that all these stories about increases in hate crime and incidents is merely relate to an increase in reports which without an idea of convictions is pretty meaningless?

give it 10 years and you won't be able to mention muslims in a negative light without a knock on the door from the thought police

deary me, won't anyone think of the racists?
|

It is remarkable the head in the sand brigade on here. Regardless of whether Brexit is overall a good thing or not, it's totally obvious that one of the results was going to be a more divisive society in which racist incidents were going to increase. It's happening whether you want to admit it or not.
|
|
By:
What's your source for the fact that it's happening then asparagus?
|
|
By:
I've seen it with my own eyes and friends of mine have experienced it. It's been widely reported too.
|
|
By:
The vote to leave will create a more cohesive society than if the vote was to Remain.
There was nativist and racist insults before the referendum, how do you know that there are more hate crimes as such now? One thing is for sure, there are more hotlines promoted by the Remainers. So of course there will be more reports. The mainstream media deliberately worried foreign nationals during and after the campaign. The msm yearns for Brexit to create a more diverse society with more racial tension. This is a weapon that they use to beat Farage with. Are the gullible still believing these pro EU outlets? |
|
By:
Anecdotal asparagus. It hasn't been reported. What has been reported is that there has been increase in reports of hate crime to police.

i voted to leave the EU because of the diabolical Illumanatti Agenda that I'm part of..
the Grand Vizier of the Ullumanatti has instructed all of his followers to follow the plan. 1. eat all the good chocolate in store - never pay for your food. 2. let down the air in your neighbours car wheels. 3. rent goods, never buy, to make your neighbour look shabby. 4. say you never diet, you are naturally thin. 5. change lightbulbs when you visit to flickering type. 6. change neighbours toilet tissue to one with itching powder. 7. be ready to pick up the pieces and dominate and rule. All hail the grand vizier. viva brexit. |

Britain's most senior police officer has alluded to a spike in "hate crime" over the summer of 2016 because of the UK's decision to leave the European Union after the 23 June referendum. Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe, said the majority of those targeted were Eastern Europeans.
According to figures gathered by the mayor's office, there were 2,300 race hate-related incidents in the London in the 38 days following EU Referendum. In the 38 days beforehand, there had been 1,400 incidents. The figures showed that in the 12 months to August 2016, there had been a 16% rise in reported hate crimes. Speaking at London's City Hall, Hogan-Howe said: "We saw this horrible spike after Brexit. We couldn't say it was absolutely down to Brexit, although there was obviously a spike after it." Hogan-Howe said it appeared at least some of the hate crime incidents were linked to the EU referendum because alleged assailants referred to the vote. He added that many of those attacked were of eastern European nationality, with more attacks on Polish people than on all other nationalities put together. The death of Polish national Arkadiusz Jóźwik on 29 August, two days after being attacked in Harlow, has been widely condemned and is being treated by Essex Police as a hate crime. Two Polish men were attacked in the town hours after a vigil for the dead man in the town on 3 September. Six people are on bail in connection with the killing and two Polish police officers went to patrol in the town with local police in an effort to reassure the local Polish community. District commander Chief Inspector Alan Ray said the two Polish officers had "been well received by all members of the community. They are helping us engage in particular with members of the Polish community who do not speak English as their first language." Since the referendum, there have also been attacks on a Polish community centre in London, while anti-Polish flyers were distributed in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire. Prime Minister Theresa May told her Polish counterpart Beata Szydlo that "hate crime has no place in UK society." The Home Office is putting in place a new Hate Crime Action Plan to tackle the problem. Now, you'd have thought the most senior police officer in the country confirming what everyone knows - that racial hate crimes have risen since the referendum - would make the news in some way. Don't worry, I've checked for you. I've looked on the websites of the Telegraph, the Mail and the Express and guess what...not a sausage. Breitbart - bless their racist cotton socks - managed to have an article on their site yesterday still claiming there were no spikes at all. As an aside, the express does have an article today (http://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/715612/refugees-hate-crime-africa-race-migrants-immigrants-cambridge-stickers-romsey-recreation) about stickers in Cambridge telling immigrants to go back to Africa. Thanks for reading, now you can all go back and dig another little hole in the sand just big enough for your heads. |

I don`t think that British people should be under any greater obligation not to be racist than other countries.
It depends on the country, how racist is Poland for example, i don`t know? |
|
By:
Japan, Indonesia, Iran, Rwanda, China, Russia, France, Argentina??..
|
|
By:
For example i would not like to see Polish policemen having any authority in England. I do not trust the police in the vast majority of countries throughout the world. In some such countries if you find yourself in any sort of trouble it is possible the police will torture or even murder you.
That`s how it is. |
|
By:
Now how civilised are Polish policemen? i don`t know.
|
|
By:
LFC - your first post...deary me.
Is that the best you can do? They started it! They're worse! Mummy, look! And you don't even know if they are (as if that would be any justification). How about we measure ourselves against, erm, ourselves. We - as a country - were demonstrably this racist. Now, we're THIS racist. That not worry you at least a tiny bit? But then is this the new barometer now in the post-referendum Britain. Are our police less violent than those in Rwanda. Yep? Great then, everything's fine. Now, where's that hole I just dug. |

If there has been a spike in Hate Crimes and if it has been as a result of Brexit (and because something happens subsequently it doesn't happen consequently) then thankfully we have laws and punishment to deal with that sort of thing.
Anyone found guilty of perpetrating hate crime - genuine hate crime that hurts, intimidates or threatens individuals based on race, colour, gender, sexuality etc - should be dealt with by these laws which are the result of us living in an advanced and civilised society and I have no problem with that. People hiding behind pretend outrage and pseudo-fear, using these laws to shut down freedom of expression can go fk themselves. |
|
By:
Neither does people getting physically abused by the looks of it.
|
|
By:
let me explain, you can`t divorce a country and what it is from the people who live in that country.
now i am looking at Britain and its history over the last 1000 years. and what it has achieved, its greatness and its many failures. That cannot be divorced from everything that it was in terms of race and religion and politics and culture. |
|
By:
Freedom of expression is the biggest amount of horsesh!t around. It doesn't exist. I can't just call you a racist, a paedophile etc etc. Likewise I can't incite others to do the same. It's against the law. Freedom of expression doesn't trump the law from those expressions being clearly wrong or dangerous.
As for IF there's a spike. Seriously? If? Maybe it was due to the influx of ladybirds round June eh? Jesus, I think your hole needs to be a bit deeper. |
|
By:
i still reckon the spike in hate crimes was started pre brexit vote
and caused brexit, perhaps, and not t'other way round plenty of it not reported, but the murder of an mp was pre brexit, not post the effects of brexit have barely filtered into uk, yet |
|
By:
I'd agree Donny, I think there was an increase in the build up. Stands to reason, you have so much focus on "how much better would our country be with fewer foreigners" in it and building up to Nige's Breaking Point poster. I do think though there has been a spike since. A sense that suddenly it's become legitimate to use terms and be generally abusive in such a way that wasn't permissible previously.
|
|
By:
True Donny
The reason people voted for Brexit was because of the number of immigrants we had allowed into our society? So that must also be a contributory factor surely? I would expect it to be temporary. |
|

May says she will get us a good deal before we leave, but that is exactly what she won't get
, because the rest of the EUdo not want us to leave. So what happens if she cannot get us a good deal, will the referendum be honoured, our leaving is already being delayed a year, until late next year? |
|
By:
give it ten years and somebody like starkey will tell us all about it !
|
|
By:

By:
may has to get "a good deal" as there is an election shortly afterwards
unless she can delay final brexit until after 2020 ? |

Apart from y'know the violence - foreigners being killed, young lads being beaten up, my wife being told to go back home when on the train (erm, she was) - then I've got to say it's a really interesting time. The whole fall out from this is fascinating in terms of who will win out and how good a deal we manage to negotiate and what happens next if it looks like we're getting the sh!tty end of the stick. Then, there's what's happening over the pond. It could all end up being catastrophic, but really interesting all the same.
