Apparently the "tradition" is that if a bull manages to kill the matador instead of being killed itself for the pleasure of a baying audience, it's mother is also then killed so it can't produce any more bulls that actually fight back. That seems fair. What a lovely tradition.

Heads the matador wins, tails the bull loses.

In Spain, 3,200 official bullfights take place annually. About 210,000 bulls die every year in Latin American bullfights (Mexico, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador and Venezuela). Fifty-two matadors have been killed in the arena since 1700.

There is some who say the same thing about the Grand National ,racing ,the circus ,zoos ,keeping pets ,eating meat ,eggs ,milk ect

there is even a thread on horse racing ...turkeys and christmas Laugh

just to clear one thing up ...bullfighting is not a sport ,they moved away from sport to art a long time ago .

Anyone been to a bullfight ?

Anyone read  death in the afternoon  ?

can anyone see the problems with calling for a ban on something like this and the problems that could cause and the unitended consiquences it could produce  ,the change of the landscpae to the joblosses and the cultural void it would leave ,the feelings of having your culture removed by people that do not understand ?

So many comments about the matador getting what he deserved ect just shows that as a species the human has not come far ,yet we have moved a long way in the last 50 years some have us believe ,here is a cartoon from 1953

i wonder how the moral ajudicator will find when when its your turn to be judged ,when your loves  are picked over and devoured in a hail of hate and spite ....i wonder how they will stand up to close scrutiny and examination .

I dont have a love of bullfighting ,i have never been to one ,i could see how some people might view it or come to think its cruel but the way this story has devoloped over twitter ect is interesting to say the least ,there is potential for great damage to be unleashed in the world via social media imo ,and when it comes you might find the unintended consequences not to your taste .

It is my opinion that bullfighting is indefensible.

From PETA

Just days before the first death of a matador gored in a Spanish bullring since 1985, dozens of committed activists from as far away as Australia, Russia and Sweden came together in Pamplona's main square. Their purpose was to remind Spain and the rest of the world that all bullfights are bloodbaths in which thousands of terrified animals are stabbed, mutilated and killed in front of jeering crowds every year.

Donate now!
Images from their powerful demonstration have made headlines around the world and even prompted Pamplona's Mayor to declare a need to "rethink" basing a festival on such tremendous animal suffering.

The bullfighting industry is dying, and we need your help to ensure that its end comes as soon as it possibly can.

Please donate today and help power our vitally important work for bulls and all other animals.

Few who have seen a bullfight in Pamplona or anywhere else would call this violence "entertainment". While some people still half-heartedly attempt to market bullfighting as a "tradition" to gullible tourists, the vast majority of Spaniards – and more than 100 municipalities across Spain – have rejected this bloody spectacle.

That's because bullfights are hideously cruel remnants of a past that is completely out of step with the values of modern Spain. It's not uncommon for a bull – even one who hasn't been goaded into a terrifying run down the narrow streets of Pamplona – to have suffered before he is pushed into the ring. Once there, he will be tormented by as many as eight men who will taunt, beat and stab him with daggers and harpoon-like banderillas until he becomes weak and exhausted from blood loss. The matador will then stab him with a sword, and an executioner will cut his spinal cord, often leaving him paralysed but still conscious as he is chained and dragged out of the arena. Moments later, another bull will be brought in to endure the same fate.

You can speak out against such horrific abuse by giving generously today.

Tourists who attend bullfights are helping to keep this dying industry on life support. PETA and our affiliates around the world are working hard to end ticket sales and close down the bullrings. We've been putting pressure on the Spanish government, the tourism industry and companies that promote bullfights. We're working with animal groups in Spain and elsewhere to hold attention-grabbing demonstrations like the recent one in Pamplona that are helping educate tourists and government officials about the cruelty of bullfights, which many stories on the Running of the Bulls leave out.

Momentum is truly on our side, but the success of our work for animals depends on the resources provided by caring PETA supporters like you. Please help us save bulls and countless other animals by donating today.

Kind regards,

Amazed to see an obituary for the matador in The Times today.

Seems he was a journeyman matador, not one of the top ones.

Championship level, I suppose.

Said he was the first matador to die in 30 years.  So, in recent years the scoreline would be Bulls 1 Matadors about 10,000.

When I was ca 18-20, I went on a holiday to Majorca. We went on a trip that included some bull fighting. Copious alcohol was available before we went to see the bull fighting. It was a fairly small bull, but a bit dangerous all the same. The bull was not killed, nor harmed as far as I recall, and probably had his horns bound up in some material. (It was a long time ago) They actually encouraged people on the trip to get in the ring and be chased by the bull! Some lads would jump into the ring and be chased across the ring by the bull and jump up into the stand on the other side of the ring. It looked fairly dangerous to me, particularly since most of the young lads were tanked up.
