He doesn't count.
Baseball is not played seriously in many countries at all. You might as well throw in the greatest Curler of all time of the greatest tiddly winks player. |

Should be pointed out that Ruth played only against white players throughout his career. He was utterly dominant (and was an excellent pitcher too, prior to converting to a full-time outfielder) but his numbers might not be so impressive had he faced the best the negro leagues, and Latinos for that matter, not been excluded by the racists running the game.
Fwiw, Bonds is far and away the best ìn my lifetime, PEDs notwithstanding. |

By:
Made a mess of one of those sentences but... Bonds > Ruth.

Which team sports would you allow then, SH? Football and basketball?

I think if you are going to give labels or titles of greatest ever sports performer or sports person, then you cannot seriously compare the achievements of baseball player 100 years ago to a footballer of today for example because the number of countries that play the Baseball at a top level are very few and far between so there is not much competition to be had within their own sport over the course of history worldwide let alone to begin to compare their achievements to a sports person from another sport.
Only sports performers that are in truly internationally competitive sports can have their achievements or impact compared, international sorts such as Football, Tennis, Athletics, some Motor Sports, Basketball and Golf for example. They are sports that at the elite level are played and competed by performers from the world over. I discount Cycling completely because it lacks any technique or skill and relies so heavily on just the physical side, and drugs. Rugby and Cricket are also only taken remotely seriously by a handful of nations, let's be honest, and this brings me onto the actual point, if hundreds of countries took Rugby and Cricket as seriously as they do Football, then the current top players in these two sports would probably not be the top players in their sports, the odds would be against given the sheer number of extra competitors, they would bound to be better performers produced OR at least players just as good. Babe Ruth has little competition worldwide in his own sport in the last century. Whereas, today's Footballers and Athletics stars can be compared to the past because they've always been played competitively and in numbers globally. He was in essence, a fat man who hit a ball and ran around half a circle in what is really a niche sport. |
By:
You lost me when you included exclusive 'sports' like tennis, golf and, especially, motor sports.
By:
the fact that he was fat has nothing to do with it.........ITS THE HITTING........same with golf............fat men can be great golfers also and golf is the most skillful game ever
By:
You cannot compare a very technical and skilled sport like Golf to Baseball.
Those other sports I mentioned, they are highly skilled and very competitive worldwide whether people like them or not. |
By:
There are currently MLB players from:
South Africa Japan South Korea Taiwan Samoa Germany Italy Netherlands UK Australia New Zealand Brazil Colombia Venezuela Aruba Bahamas Canada Cuba Curacao Dominican Republic Jamaica Mexico Nicaragua Panama Not so niche after all. |
By:
And to say baseball is not technical suggests you have no idea what you are talking about.
By:
I'm not a Baseball expert, that is true, but I have seen Baseball played, and it can't be compared to Golf, Golf is a more skill full and technical sport.

who's the american? posting here?
I liked the film with Gary Cooper about Lou Gehrig (pride of the yankees) - the real Babe Ruth was in it. Did not like the film with John Goodman, the babe(92). Made Babe Ruth into an ignorant dolt. The guy must have had the best eye hand co-ordination every - a fat athlete? makes you proud that no one approached him on talent. i personally think ED Moses was amazing. Stunning gulf between himself and the second place. Or the runner Emil Zatopek - he used to train in army boots in deep snow running at night with a flashlight. Working during the day? Pure torture. |
By:
You mention Baseball players from very small nations, mostly, how many people try to make it as a professional in those sports world wide can't be many compared to more international sports like Football, it's much harder to stand out in competitive sports.
By:
Maybe, maybe not. Golf is certainly a lot more elitist.
The best baseball players only get a hit once every three at-bats. Thats any hit, not just home runs. If a golfer failed on two out of every three shots, he'd be me! |
By:
Would I be wrong if I said that the 10 best Baseball players in the world are indeed American? all from one country?
By:
Small nations? You do realise that Canada, USA, Brazil and China (in the shape of Taiwan) are the four largest countries after Russia?
By:
Yes, you'd be wrong.
By:
Also, comparing any team sport to football in terms of popularity/participation is a mismatch. Only basketball comes close.

Cricket

Cricket me bollox.

I beg thy pardon...
And to think i was gonna put Bandy........... |

Baseball is far more technical than golf. Any eejit can hit a golf ball, Not many people can hit a baseball coming at them at 100mph with a curved bat. And that is only a Fastball. Try trying to hit a curve ball, change up, cutter, slider or knuckle ball and most folk would look a fool.
Ruth was a super star. 714 Home Runs (3rd all time) 0.342 lifetime batting average (10th all time) 2,213 runs batted in (2nd all time) 123 stolen bases, a lot for a big man Seven World Series He was arguably the best ever hitter but he was also a very good Pitcher. Rare to be so good at both. Pitching record 94-46 ERA 2.28 anything under 3 is very good nowadays. |

Who are the top 10 baseball players in the world? where are they from?
looking at the best 10 players from a link I just saw, it says 1. Mike Trout - American 2. Bruce Harper - American 3. Clayton Kershaw - American 4. Andrew Mccutchen - American 5. Paul Goldschmidt - American 6. Josh Donaldson - American 7. Manny Machedo - American/Dominican 8. Chris Sale - American 9. David Price - American 10. Busty Posy - American and looking further down the list top the 100th place, many other Americans fill it up. The top 10 Golfers come from 5 different countries, Top 10 footballers from last Balon D'or came from 9 different countries. Top 10 Tennis players come from 9 differnt countries |
By:
william bendix (alan ladd's sidekick) made the babe ruth story? did not know that.
By:
So basically at the very top it's Americans v Americans, if other countries were competitive it might put previous legends records into perspective, whereas in Golf and Football, current players can be compared to players all over the world from past and present.

He was fat enuff..
Oi Mikky i was gonna say ping pong.. |
By:
Ty Cobb would disagree though.
If you haven't seen it, Cobb, starring Tommy Lee Jones as Cobb, is a great baseball movie. |
By:
Well it's not surprising that Americans dominate the list but it's obviously subjective. In 2011 Venezuelan Miguel Cabrera became the first triple crown winner in 43 years. Japan's Yu Darvish is one of the best pitchers in the game but he's missed a year due to elbow surgery.
By:
Too much ping pong metinks..
By:
Also, the USA is yet to win the world baseball classic, their version of the World Cup. Japan has won it twice and the most recent final was contested between Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. Cuba habitually beat the US at the Olympics.

from what I read about the world classic series, there's only been 3 of them! with only 16 countries taking part, win 1 game, you're invited to the next series!
Golf is a very difficult sport to master, you have to think a lot more. Baseball is a simple sport compared to Golf which is far more complex. |

Don't know where you got the list but following none Americans would be right up there for consideration in a vote for current top twenty players Jose Altuve (Venezuela) David Ortiz (Dominican Republic) Xander Boagerts (Aruba) Johnny Cueto (Dominican Republic) Jose Bautista (Dominican Republic) Atau Tanaka (Japan) Miguel Cabrera (Venezuela) And that's off the top of my head |
